I would consdier using a tranny oil like Dexron III. You need to make sure it’s fully flushed though. Peopel still use it for their KTM gearboxes (on the newer bikes with split gearboxes).

Other than that any cheap mineral oil will be okay :)

Also, what do you guys think about giving it a kero flush?

i’d lean away from a kero flush. you will have to do extra oil changes to get the kero out.

it will thin the oil, how much i don’t know. it would depend on ratio of kero to oil.

if there’s a supercheap/ similar near by check to see if they have any non friction modified oil on special. car oil won’t do as most are friction modified.

penrite do oil for bikes. although they have a list on the back of their enduro oil, what car oil they do that can be used in what make/size of bike.

it is a good oil but 1/2 to 1/4 of the price of bike oriented oil makers/ brands. i.e. the shell stuff ktm recommended in 2002, motul etc.etc.

i use penrite. not had a problem to date, in hp cars or the bikes.

KTM newcastle said the’ve got some stuff that’s about $10/L so that might do I think. Scary thing is I’m going to have to ride it around on the road at dusk to get some heat into it and I’m reasonably sure the light is barely better than a candle. Wish me luck!

    Hi AB,
trust you’ve had time to pull the tank/plug by now,
have you had the 250 running at all yet?
(I’m hoping the bike stalled first and then it turned submarine) –

PS Id use the fuel for the lawn mower’ after adding 1/2 cup of metho.
    The bike/rider was well underwater:blink:  …

Oh and judging by the photos even the grade 4+ boys needed a bit of team assistance for some of the hills…

Trent speaking from experience when my son totaly submerged his old DR200:silly: I drained the oil about 5 times even before i went for a ride on it. I used a Diesel oil that I got from work because it was cheap,ie free:laugh: basicly got the oil up to temp and ran it for a couple of minutes shut it down then drained it. The 5th time I went for a quick ride for about 10 minutes and then dropped that oil as well. I then filled bike with the normal bike oil I was running at the time and reduced my change interval down to 10 hours for a couple of rides. I didnt have any problems at all. One thing I did that has not been mentioned is between oil changes I removed the filter and washed it in kero.and reused it until I put the bike oil in. hope everything works out ok for you.

I took the oil screens out and continued to let it drain then put them and the drain bolt back in and topped it up then kicked it with the kill switch on a few times then turned of the kill switch and it started first kick with the choke on and air filter off. I ran it for a minute or so then dumped the oil out again and it was milky again. I was just about to top it up again and take it for a ride and it started raining and I’m not riding in the dark and rain so I packed it up for the night leaving it drain more. If its not raining I’ll top it up in the morning and take it for a quick spin.

FWIW I spoke with my mechanic mate and he’s concerned that by not getting the water out immediately the rings could’ve caused corrosion damage to the bore but said I may as well give it a run and see how it goes. Fingers crossed.

Hey Scott, yeah done a bit of work on it and had it running. I wouldn’t have thought water would make it into the fuel tank but now that you mention it I may as well tip it out and put some fresh stuff in.

Ollie, free oil would make this a lot easier. I didn’t expect the oil would be buggered and put a $30 liter of motul through it first up :( At least now I have some $10/L stuff and a couple of aftermarket filters to put in.

A couple of smilies to show you’re joking might help. Some prick did that to me when I bought my bike and I was forced to cop it when I realised. I could’ve passed it on to someone but then I’m sure karma would’ve had it that my next bike send me off a steep drop. $1500 to fix it and its great now. If his needs similar spent at least he’ll be able to sleep knowing he didn’t take advantage of another rider.

No but i know the deserving ktm dealer to trade it in at though :whistle: 👿

hmmm but then again they would screw over the buyer any way. so on 2nd thought.

oh oh i just had a brain wave. if it has to be rebuilt your bro could get a 350 kit fitted!B)

    now that’s an idea!!!!;)
