Am neeeding some help on choice of bikes. Buying new is simply not affordable as need to buy two bikes, so was thinking maybe a 250 for me and a 125 for the lad or 450 and 250 respectively. But there are so many bloody variations these days, I really am quite confused by the array of choice
They don’t need to be road registerable, but I guess such would help with resale. Need not be rockets either. So the minimum needs would be
1. 4 stroke
2. Electric start
3. Headlamp
4. Speedo/Clocks??
5. European or Japanese make.
6. Budget for both bikes 7-8kcheers gang

November 4, 2011 at 3:19 am #2112362 early model DRZ400e very simple choice mate
November 4, 2011 at 8:20 am #211239Corey makes some sense with his post, the DRZ’s would be a good choice as they are great all rounders and are registerable which is VERY important if you intend to ride in the State forests. They are also learner legal so your son could ride it about on his “L’s”.
Other wise a couple of Yamaha WR250’s would be my choice personally.
November 4, 2011 at 8:56 am #2112422 bikes the same makes a lot of sense for spares and ease of maintainance. I would go the WR250 as Mick said , it will be a bit lighter in the tight stuff for your son ( how old is he ?) although the DRZ is a great reliable bike and you would easily get 2 for your 8k.
Make sure they are registered too , you will greatly increase your riding area and you can come on some old bull rides too
November 4, 2011 at 9:16 am #211244Welcome Squizzy check out the WR250R mate heaps lighter than a DR same maintenance routine they are trouble free and soooooo much lighter than a DR400 great bikes to learn on that will last for years. There a two WRs the F and the R the R is fuel injected and requires far less maintance then the F which is a race version. I used to ride with a bloke that rode one, it flew and he couldn’t kill it. It will suit you and your son better. Try getting a few test rides as well

November 4, 2011 at 10:44 am #211237I agree with Mick Squizzy, the Police give the Watgans a right working over and have done for the last few months – everyweekend, results of thier efforts published in the Newie Herald. A ride is sooooo much more relaxed when you aren’t worried about whether the Cops are around the next corner. Blokes I ride with have been aproached by the Police twice since July and we don’t hang around so they’ll catch up with you no matter how fast you are, they got our boles at the cats loading the bikes back up on one occasion.
Other spots locally include Wallaroo (lots of rocks :pinch: ), Dungog (big hills  ), Nundle (Hicks  ) and many others, look to the rides section of the OB forum.
I tend to agree with TB, the Yammys are a nice inexpensive second hand bike, the DRZs are bullet proof but a bit much weight for a 16 yr old unless he’s built like a brick sh!thouse… don’t write off the 2 strokes a 250cc KTM, Gas gas or Husky might be the go, there not as scary as they sound but a good one might stretch your budget for the 2 bikes.
Give me a yell when you get yourself and your young feller set up and I’ll show you around!Cheers

IvaNovember 4, 2011 at 6:25 pm #211246Ah, thats terrific advice folks, we thankyou so very much, we’ll get hunting for some WR’s and DRZ’s then, cheers
Whats the story with rego guys? Do you need a full road rego to ride off-road or is there some other kinda licence you can get that covers just bush riding?
Given that there is some kinda need for headlamps amd blinkers, then I guess yes w’d need to get bikes with the potential at least to be ridden legally on the road. And If I have read right, both the Yammie WR’s and the Suzuki DRZ’s would fit this bill, is that right?
Thanks again gang and my apologies for my local ignorance and sooo many bloody questions
November 4, 2011 at 6:38 pm #211250Hey Squizzy
Welcome to the site mate.
Rego requirements vary from state to state.
You really do need to get the bikes set up for legal riding as it opens up so many riding options.
At OBT we have some great father and son combos who get out in the bush together and have a great time.
Three that spring to mind are Mike and Tom from Noosa (WR’s) , Al and Corey from the Coffs Coast (DRZ’s), and Adam and Sam (KTM’s)Enjoy the site and I may see you both out there one day.

Not to Forget Murph and Tim,
on the Kato’s from the Newcastle region
Squizz, the DR400’s and WR yamahaha’s are both fully road registerable and great bikes in the bush. Also a worthy mention would be a TTR250. To ride legally in NSW you need full Rd rego. This may change in the future (dont hold your breath) where there is talk of introducing a rec rego similar to VIC. Look at Paying about $400 a year for rego/CTP for a 250-650cc bike. (recently changed where sub 300cc bikes were markedly cheaper)
welcome to the site mate

November 4, 2011 at 6:59 pm #211253Full rego and a licence is required to ride anywhere other than private property Squizz.
Welcome to the site and don’t worry about asking any “stupid questions” there are plenty of us that do that from time to time but better to ask and learn than to loive in ignorance.
Welcome to the site

Thanks Jeffro, nice to be among friends, cheers…
Actually just stumbled across this KTM for 3500.00 with 3000 original kms, worth looking at you think, or just stick to the Zooks and Yammies?
November 5, 2011 at 2:58 pm #211278Nothing wrong with the old RFS engined Kato’s
spares prices may be a little more exspensive, but generally speaking they are a good trail bike.
