AnonymousAnother discussion point thread for you that will eventually end up about something completely unrelated……….again.
Surely the peaks on dirtbike helmets are not to keep the sun out of our eyes? Are we meant to believe that they are for added protection in the event of a faceplant, in that they fold down over the helmet opening to cover the goggles and eyes. To my way of thinking, there is always a good chance that the peak could hit the ground and snap the helmet backwards, breaking the cervical spine (fancy medical term for neck).
I have always had ideas about redesigning goggles that fit to the helmet internally without the need for the piece of elastic from grandma’s undies to hold them in place. This would then maybe allow you to wear ya roadbike helmet or a similar modified design, with a full face visor for protection. I won’t air my thoughts on my designs yet until this thread degrades into a slinging match about something trivial and needs bringing back on topic.
Now it’s over to the members for discussion.
Slug
Yamaha’s are the best. all other bikes suck
February 24, 2009 at 3:15 am #123608Its a visor to keep the sun out of our eyes isn’t it? Well, isn’t it?? What else would it be for if not that?? And, let me say, having ridden roadies with road helmets, the peak is a good thing too!
Now, how about them broncos?
February 24, 2009 at 3:23 am #123611Being someone who doesn’t like wearing googles unless necessary,I tend to use my peak for roost protection,by tilting my head down and slightly to the right and that seems to stop roost.
BTW best fix your avatar you mad bastard, that is a bit creepy Slug.February 24, 2009 at 3:26 am #123616micknmeld wrote:

February 24, 2009 at 3:37 am #123617Good work and thanks SLUG, as I was about to fix it myself good and proper as I had just spotted the problem myself.

AnonymousAfter recently crashing I can say the peak does nothing. I always assumed it was for the sun, and looking at it, can’t believe it serves any other purpose. Well, maybe a roost shield if your stupid to ride up someones arese in the bush whilst not wearing goggles
February 24, 2009 at 3:58 am #123621Because it looks way cooler than without a peak! And I look way cool with my jersey
February 24, 2009 at 4:06 am #123625cool as shit, too cool for school
February 24, 2009 at 4:51 am #123628yeah next time someonesnaps a peak off, see how geeky they look, just like one of those highheel wearing, leather bound, latte sipping vespa arsepilots (AKA road posers)
I still have the quarter moon peak three rivet clipped on my old NAVA screwed to the wall in the shed, way cooler with than without.
Also the do keep the sun out of your eyes also the shadows are easier to see into as the retina doesn’t have to focus as often, like Mick head down and slightly to the right when roost comes my way, and if a thin plastic peak snaps your neck before it gives, sorry slug but you have much bigger issues at play here.
Road bike visors are not fun in the dust with no peak, this I know for a fact, also in the wet and mud they are less tahn fun and roosting tends to wreck them fast.
BC
edit-but Mick I put chicken because their necks are spindy and break easily DOH, not referring to chicken the old bull (doesn’t that sound oxymoronic?), and slugs are invertebrae with no-necks and no bones

February 24, 2009 at 6:53 am #123609if you are going to pass someone on a motocross track depending on abilities and speed you may have to follow them for several corners and in order to pass you need to be close and when you are close you will get the roost big time, they are not there for any protection you wallies:laugh: , its all about making the pass as safe as possible and stopping roost
