Hi All,
Anyone got any suggestion on gearing the WR250 for a longer ride, I can only hit about 90-100kms with the stock gearing, I have heard 14/52 would be better for longer rides.
Cheers
CHris.December 23, 2008 at 8:01 pm #115873Is that 90-100 flat or is that cruise speed you could maintain for 10kms,fit the 14 that came with and try when you go into town today when you do your pick up, easier parking all problems solved

December 24, 2008 at 11:19 am #115877Mate try 13 48 and see how much to end you will pick up, Merry merry christmas to you all
December 25, 2008 at 10:46 pm #115874Mine is running 14/52 and will do over 100 easily enough. Wouldn’t want to sit on anything over about 90 for any length of time though. By the same token you wouldn’t want the first couple of gears to be any higher. Seems like a good compromise to me.
December 26, 2008 at 9:15 pm #115905Thanks Ecks, I’m going to put the 14 on today and do a little test, see how she goes.
When doing 90 now it is revving it’s head off, I would hate to do 50kms pinned with it revving so hard.Cheers

AnonymousChris,
Hopefully the file attachment works. It is an Excel spreadsheet that will allow you to calculate the effect of gearing changes on the speeds achievable in each gear.
It also allows to to enter different tyre size parameters (width, profile, diamter) and show how it affects speed as well, which is something you recently asked.
you will need to enter the gear ratios and final drive ration for your bike, as this spreadsheet is setup for my 04 wr450. This info is in the info pages at the front of your manual.
If the attachment doesn’t work, PM me your email and I will send it directly to you or anyone else that would like it.
If you have any questions, just ask.
regards,
Slug
EDIT: the forum would accept the excel upload so I’ll have to send it individually if required

Chris.I’m back! Long story of blood, death, kangaroos, funerals, working silly hours and porridge!
Seriously though, Chris, did you ever play with your gearing other than putting on the 14 tooth front? Just planning for Condo next year and I’ll need a bit more top end speed I think. With the 14/50 combo I have cleared 120km/h but I want a bit more. At the same time of course, I don’t want to lose punch in the lower gears.
Any help appreciated!
Cheers blokes!
May 12, 2009 at 3:24 am #133668Hey Ecks, welcome back hope all is O.K, I have a 48t rear sitting here wondering wether I should try it or not, I don’t like you want to lose that low end punch. I think it probably would be O.K as these things have plenty to spare anyway. I’m Currently running 14/52 (stock rear I think is 52) Might get a 50 to try for an inbetween.
Cheers
Chris.May 12, 2009 at 3:51 am #133671All is well, life is hectic that’s all! Stock is 52? I could have sworn mine had 50 stamped on it. Hmmm… If you don’t want the 48 I’ll give you two bob and a pickled egg for it! 4 teeth on the rear would be more of a jump than 1 on the front. That’s a fair change, I’d be interested to see the difference!
May 12, 2009 at 4:56 am #115876Hi guys, I think you should try the 48 Chris, if you loose too much bottom end use the clutch more and keep it happy and in the power, you will be surprised how well it goes at the bottom when you get the hang of it.
I have more power with Betty and run a 47 easily, just try it and see:)May 12, 2009 at 5:29 am #133706Thanks Rat, I might double check my rear to see if it is indeed a 52 or a 50, then make a call after that. Given the country at Condo (flat for the most part) I think the 250 will pull a 48 without a problem power-wise.
May 12, 2009 at 7:44 am #133715I still don’t understand ECKS, you said the Hillend had to much transport and you didn’t like the high sped stuff you didnt want to ride the railway service line between wellington and orange and your doing the Condo 750  , around 150kms + of bitumen transport over two days, more if it is dry out there and they move it further out as has happened a couple of times I have done it. And a faster ride I have never been on, flat across paddocks  Powers to you for doing it, its a great event if you need anything give me yell

May 13, 2009 at 3:04 am #133747Well TB, I was made an offer too good to refuse from a mate who also wants to go in the Condo. I was not especially keen to be honest, but he was super keen and offered financial support as well… I mean, he’s coming down from Mackay for goodness sake! How could I refuse!
My bum is already limbering up for the transport sections, of which there was 225km on Day 2 (can’t remember Day 1). As for the speed of the competitive stages – well that’s why this thread is open again. I don’t have to like travelling that fast (but I will like it) I’ll just try not to have a meeting with Mother Earth at silly speeds is all!
I’ll just have to grin and bare it (take that how you will) and enjoy the event for what it is!
