Me and a mate have 08 and 09 wr450 neither will start in gear, mine would when it was brand new for about 2000ks but another mate has an 06 and his will start in any gear anytime. It really sucks when your stalled on a steep hill.Does this happen to other bikes or Wrs?

Is the clutch disengaging properly EV. If you warm the bike up and turn it of and put it in 2nd gear can you push it? I doubt it from what you are saying.

I would be checking the adjustment, if that’s ok I would be popping the clutch out checking the plate thickness, the steel plates arent warped and the fingers on the basket aren’t notched

As TB said good chance its the clutch adjustment.
I have had the same issue on mine, I was able to use the on the fly adjuster at the lever to get it sorted.
