A few years back a mate and i had to hot wire my old land rover ( long story ) neither of us new what the hell we were doing ( i fear im setting myself up here  ) after a while we figured out the wires as its not as easy as the movies make it out to be, we twiched the wires together and the bastard just kept winding over and rooted the solenoid, as it turns out you need three wires to hot wire a car but only leave two of them together once the bugger has started. :S
So after all that, my question is that, is it just as simple as a wire touching when it shouldnt ?

 just trying to help

You’re right Nick. Does the short have to be between the switch and the starting circuit cut off relay (no 4 in the diagram) for it to open the circuit or can it be upstream of it as well. My guess is that in reality the cut off relay is near the battery and all the wiring that is likely to rub and short is downstream of it anyway.

Thank you gentlemen, all good thoughts and you have given me plenty to look for and that’s not to say I don’t welcome further comment but at the moment it is beer time so the solution will have to wait for tomorrow.

As a ktm owner I have had a bit of experience with starter motors (but not the circuitry). I’m assuming that yamaha are like ktm with one positive wire going to the starter and then earthed through the engine.

The funny thing is I had a yamaha, starter always worked but it used to chew through batteries, now I have a ktm and the battery always works but it chews through starter motors. This is not meant to make you laugh as this is the tech help section.

Yeh mine chews batteries as well

I have a bad habit of leaving key on though

My money is on the button then the relay if it has one
    Pull wires out of button
    and cross them manually ??

But my only comment is

Damn, you have some bad luck with bikes & ELECTRICS
    Good Luck with it mate

Beers and Bikes nothing wrong with that Jeffro as long as your not riding them but working on them, have you got a test lamp, you can get a cheap arse one for like $5.00 connect to earth and then test the power wires make sure you have voltage coming, start at the switch and work backwards..

Chris is right this is such an easy fix. The key being left on should have nothing to do with it because it’s on all day when you ride isn’t it?

I would be more concerned regarding the damage done up steam when the starter kept sticking in a few rides ago

Facts are there should be switch signal power at the starter solenoid unless the switch is pushed that activates the battery power fact l. You say the switch is ok well then it’s between the switch and the starter. Disconnect the starter turn it on and work backwards

Tell you what about 7 tomorrow morning I will be going past your place and will happily stop and diagnose it for you if you want. Ring me 0419 421334 after 5 am, I’d your up

Thanks for the offer mate, unfortunately I didn’t see it until now and seeing as I had my last drink about 2.00am this morning there is little chance I would have been able to get up for it anyway.

The starter wasn’t sticking on previously, the squealing noise was just the sound it made when I pushed the button.

Only been up a short time now so will head out to the shed and see what I can find.

Thanks everyone for your help, problem now solved.

I disconnected the starter button altogether and it still wound over when I conncted the battery so that was it ruled out which really only left the starter relay. I pulled that out and very scientifically tapped it on the bench a few times, hooked it back up and Bingo, no more problem.

It is working perfectly now but I will order a new one on Monday and that should be the end of that (insert a fingers crossed smiley here). Between the new relay and the new starter motor that is coming I shouldn’t have anymore starting troubles for a while at least :D

    Relay eh ;)

More than likely when the starter started playing up the noise was it binding causing a higher than normal current draw that would burn the contacts in the relay / solenoid. Then very soon after they stick in, it will do it again Jeffro so it’s lucky your fitting a new one. (we see it in trucks all the time and the training engines as during testing we really hammer the starter system)

    Un-freaking believable!!!

Problem solved (for the moment I thought, just need the new relay), anyway bolt the tank back on, fit the radiator shrouds, reinstall the head light. I’ll just check that all is well again before I refit the seat, turn the key on, all good. Hit the starter,,,,,,,,,,,,, nothing, not even a click. So I did the only reasonable thing I could do, went to a mates place and had a few beers, Monday is another day, too much to do tomoroow to play with it.

So rang around today chasing up a starter relay, $118.00 here. $20 + $15 postage from the states. I would love to buy here first but not at that price.
