Does it have a hot start, does it smell of fuel? How do you start it, no throttle, full throttle?

well it has a hot start . red choke i hope . tired no throttle, full throttle all kinds of different kickstart techniques.choke , no choke, hotstart , i think it maybe a flooding issue, but it doesn’t really smell of fuel.got to push it 6-7 m before it will fire up.

what are your valve clearances like?

sounds like a typical closing up the valves and a reshim may be due ;)

Bruce,do yourself a favor get some feeler gauges and a manual, piece of piss to check and adjust. and you will get to know how the engine ticks. The yammy manuals are pretty good.

It is easy to check the clearances but adjusting isn’t so easy, this unless I am mistaken requires having the correct size shims, verier calipers, removal of the camshafts, timing chain on and of timing the engine, you will need a tension wrench etc.

Checking if the clearances are out of spec is easy though

I am fairly certain that you will need the correct size shims and that you wont know until you measure, it is a shit easy job though, you can stretch it to a two or three can job :) :)

Shims you buy after you check the clearance $15 ea,vernier $25+, tension wrench $100+ or borrow your mates. Timing very easy if you can read engrish plenty of how to video’s on youtube and the satisfaction of doing it yourself: cost to have it done in a shop $250+ I guess its all about priorities ;) just be methodical and take plenty of pictures for backup ;) good luck with it mate

A bit like sex really. It is OK to watch someone else do it. But is much more satisfying to do it yourself.
