Hey all,
just looking into what i should expect as normal for fuel consumption for my XR650R. Currently using a 25L Safari tank. average consumption seems to be pretty heavy at the moment. i have geared it down 15/44 sprockets, sitting on the speed limit (no funny stuff). Any ideas how to get the fuel consumption down?
cheers all,Tony.

November 13, 2010 at 9:31 pm #190681I am currently running 14-48 gearing and get anywhere between, 100-120 kms to a tank (10 litres). It depends on who I am riding with and what sort of riding we are doing to how much I use. I will use more fuel riding with the likes of TB than I will riding with my son.
This gearing combination sees it revving its head off at 120kmh but is perfect for single trail and hill climbs as it pulls like a train. The standard gearing from memory was 15-41 and I got upwards of 150kms to a tank and it is claimed they will pull about 188kmh with that gearing (not much use in the bush).

Hey Tony, what fuel consumption are you getting exactly? I have gone through my diary here are some examples
1)2009 on a track we have used in the past called the “A” track which is fast wide single with a lot of sand when up it my bike got down to 8.9km/L Gearing 15/44 (If that was with your 25 litre tank it would be dry after 222kms) I got better consumption there the next time when I ran 15/47 which returned 9.4kms/L because it was labouring as much and I wasnt having to change gears as much ED78 fitted both times
2)2008 Yellow Mountain fast paddocks, fast twins, sandy rocky sections, wide open throttle 14/44 gearing speeds up to 155kms/hr and holding it wide in sections I used 14 litres to do 140kms thats 10km/L I thought would have been heaps worse  S12 rear
3)2007 Ride from Morriset to Orange 17litre tank fitted I did 254kms for 14.8L which works out to be 17.16km/L Gearing was 15/44 fast twin trails and fire trails. hard pack fast not wide open, constant throttle. Rear Michelin Desert
4) 2006 A day in the Watagns riding with 4 real quick riders a couple of years back saw me out, dry nothing left pushing after 78kms of fast singles with a standard tank of 10litres thats 7.8km/L Gearing 14/48 IRC rear
I reckon you can over gear the bike, I mean 15/44 while it doesnt rev as much at times it labours, then you will find yourself holding a wider throttle postion (on the main jet all the time sucking the fuel). My bike will go quicker with 14/44 gearing then 15/44 because it will rev right out where even with all the horsepower mods of mine, it wont on the dirt pull out to the limiter in top with 15/44. 14/44 it will easy and gets better consumption as the figures above show.
It also has a lot to do with the tyre you run, mine bike will go faster and get consumption with a lighter tyre like a S12 then it will with a Desert or a ED78 figures above reflected that.
Then you get to what jetting you have in relation to where the throttle is being held open and what jet you are running on example is it geared or in terrain that you are running on the main jet when labouring? With the right gearing you can get up in speed wide open throttle (on the main jet is last third of your throttle twist basically) and then roll of a bit of throttle without losing to much speed and not be pulling all the fuel through the main.
First question again what consumption are you getting? And I guess what do you want?

Mick trains don’t wheel stand when you breathe on the throttle. I know I have ridden the Beast. I know this post has a serious side like “will I make it or not?” But it sounds like guys talking about the fuel consumption of sports cars. Who cares just enjoy the G forces created by your right wrist. I have one of the bigger tanks of the guys we ride with. What I do is. When everybody else is out of fuel you call this your “reserve” then make your way back to the nearest fuel supply.
