Ok. Me 1996 XR400 has what is commonly known as the “Gordon Mods” done to it.

One of those being the exaust baffle removed.. Ballards sells an end piece that is supposed to basically do what removing the exaust baffle does but without the excessive noise..

Can anyone tell me if this is accurate and/or worth getting the exaust baffle end piece Ballards sells?

    Cheers…

    I agree..

    Ballards baffle aside..

Does removing stock XR baffle really give a performance gain? I didn’t do it myself, it is how I got the bike.. Everything you read seems to indicate baffle removal along with air box opening up gives some sort of performance gain..

i have seen an old xl250 twin shocker blow a xr400 away with the restricters fitted it cracked me right up .So i think those mods were warranted air box etc

Its psychologimical my good man. Sounds faster therefore it is.

A good end-cap for the stock exhaust will make two tenths of bugger-all difference to the power of the thing. Try a B&B end cap, they tend to redirect the gasses and noise rather than restrict it. Makes the bike much more pleasant to ride, because the noise is directed down into the ground rather than straight out the back.

Reckon the Ballard one is different a bit and better looking. The droopy look of a B&B would suit ECKS and a DR

All the B&B stuff is over price IMO ;)

my xr400 came with the ballards one and the original as a spare, cant say the ballards one makes a difference other than sound. I prefer the sound of the standard one. :)

Actually I reckon that droopy donger of a thing would fit right in with the XR 650 lines… with a chequered flag jersey maybe?? ;) :P

    Cheeky bugger!

B&B bashplates are good, and the same price as most competitors. But I would go for Force for most alloy gear like bashplates and rad guards. They don’t make stuff for old XR’s though – old technology y’see!

Is the sound quieter with the Ballards one?

The sound of the Ballards is quieter, when your sitting on the bike riding it gives off a different sound. Hard to describe. Cant say i like the sound thats why it is in my tool box and not on the bike.
When i worked in a bike shop we sold a guy with a xr400 a aftermarket pipe, you could here the thing coming from miles away ( also sold him the HRC power up kit ), now that makes a difference.
