we believe it is a 1996 mod
November 9, 2009 at 11:41 pm #160198So you have covered all the basics then, all the earths are good, no pinched wires, no wires hooked up incorrectly.
The best way I have found is to start with one blinker only connected and get the front right for example working, disconnected all the others, keep things simple I keep saying, the regulator / rectifier is working cause the head light is working and I seem to think these get hot anyway, check Moose’s to be sure
I think it sounds like its too hard Mick, you are looking for simple fix instead of the hard work of checking things would rather replace the reg and be happy

November 9, 2009 at 11:52 pm #160199I am convinced it is an earth problem. We are gunna go into it this arvo. The first thing I will do is check the earth on the coil and go from there. We will have Mooses XR there today to compare where everything is plugged into.
November 10, 2009 at 1:13 am #160041Don’t know how to attach the drawing that can be downloaded from address below, you need winzip to view the drawing, drawing title is kapite 17
or pm me and I can email it to you
http://motoservicemanuals.blogspot.com/2009/03/honda-xr-600r-service-manual.htmlfrom this drawing it really does show that it looks like an earth problem, check the horn works by connecting to a battery, your indicators and flasher acting as you described is possibly due to blown globe on the left side and lack of earth but the right side working due to it grounding through the brake light.
your rect/reg unit should be a finned type unit and is made such due to the heat it produces so should be ok, the spare you talk about having CDI written on it is not the same rect/reg, different gezmo!
as far as the engine stopping check the engine stop switch is not dodgy
hope this helps some way, please don’t kill me if it does not!November 10, 2009 at 1:36 am #160230It isn’t the one with the fins on it under the seat that gets hot it is the one behind the headlight.

hopefully that is the flasher you are talking about otherwise I did find that there is another model with a AC regulator that is mounted behind the headlight i will send you that drawing also, the problem is I have only found drawings of overseas models the U AND B I assumed the U would be the same as the Australian model
November 10, 2009 at 2:58 am #160243Thanks medogrocket,
The diagram is just what I need. Yes there is another dodad behind the headlight that has a sticker on it that says regulator/rectifier CDI unit. It also has a barrel shaped do hicky with two wires going to it,straped to it with a rubber band thingy. It is a totally different unit to the AC regulator that has fins and is found under the seat.November 10, 2009 at 5:29 am #160245Just thought, as a quick test, use the earth from the horn and earth to a metal part of the frame as good as you can, see what that does, gives you an easy 2nd earth

Your efforts are appreciated and some good karma will come your way in some form or another in the future.
Cheers
MickNovember 10, 2009 at 7:06 am #160042electrical problems sh*t me, I always liked the old XR’s and hated it when Honda went to the CRF’s, that’s why I no longer have a Honda, always like trying to fix things like this if I can find the patience and time, but hard if you are not with the bike, let me know what you find, it will be some stupid little thing I bet.

Yes a mechanic by trade a plant mechanic to be exact, quite different to an auto sparky. Want tracks on your dozer? Fine! Lights dont work? Call a sparky. :laugh:November 10, 2009 at 11:16 pm #160373
AnonymousMake sure you post up what the problem is Mick when you figure it out. There are a few XR’s floating around here so will be good for future reference.
