Make sure you post up what the problem is Mick when you figure it out. There are a few XR’s floating around here so will be good for future reference.

THat is the plan. Unless it is something I did wrong.

    GOT IT SORTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After two hours of stuffing around scratching our heads even the auto sparky was getting frustrated with the bloody thing. We even replaced he whole wiring harness with the spare one we had. We still had a working tail light and a working head light and that was all.
That was our down fall, seeing as though the headlight was working on both hi and lo beam we assumed it was all ok. All the wiring for the headlight is in a rubber protector do dad thing and when out of frustration it was pulled off, it became evident that it was very dodgily wired and that it was earthing out all the time, how the headlight still worked was beyond us. A rewire of the headlight and lo and behold everything started to work like it is supposed to.

Good job by the sparky, was interesting rereading the whole thread as the problem was worked out early

Maybe wiring hooked up wrong and the heat is because it is shorted to ground or pinched wire

Bit more of a think about this and if I was you i would check that you have good earth connections first,Not knowing what you have done I agree with TB that you should check the wiring is correct,

I am convinced it is an earth problem.

So you have covered all the basics then, all the earths are good, no pinched wires, no wires hooked up incorrectly?

    TB

It shows that electrical problems do require making sure all connections are good and clean and that earths are as important as power supplies as they provide the return path to complete the circuit and nothing should be taken for granted.

    Good thread

One funny thing that happened after we replaced the wiring harness is that all of a sudden the bike wouldn’t start.

After ten or so kicks Tripper pipes up and says, would this black box thingy be stopping it from starting? He was holding the CDI in his hand with it still connected to the old harness.
Yes Tripper that will make a big difference.

Another thing we learnt TB is never take anything for granted when dealing with electrickery. :S

Yeah its in the last sentence of my last post

Also it shows in this case if ALL earths and wiring had been checked it would have been fixed, the K.I.S.S method, keep it simple stupid.

I see components replace all the time in my jobs when the basics have been ignored

Mate the wiring was a shamozzle,a legacy of the previous owner and our rush factor when putting it back together probably didn’t help the overall cause.
