AS many of you know, the mighty CAT XR630 piloted by TRIPPER630 has some issues bought on by oil starvation. The top end got kinda cooked and the cam started to merge with the head.

The story as it stands is……..
WE have found another XR630 here for sale for $3000,big tank, flat slide carb, full stain tune system, big finned head,6mths rego etc.
It does have a rattle though which we are thinking is the camchain as it goes great and blows no smoke.

Or do you reckon we should rebuild the engine in the bike we have,
    Piston/ring Kit $360
    Top end gasket kit $48
    New camshaft $359
    Labour?????????????????
I have a spare head for the bike in good con.
    What do guys think?
    A rebirth or a rethink.

Could you part the 2nd XR out and Make your money back? or at least cover costs?

So which option is renovate and which detonate?

Ok, I’ll be telling you what you already know Mick, but I reckon it depends on the bikes. What’s the condition of the busted one you have (obviously other than the engine)? Any fruit on it? When it is done up will it be as good a bike as the other one? What’s an XR600 worth when parted out?

I would look at the end value, and the other bike which has a lot of fruit and make a decision. Gut feeling from me is that the other bike is a good buy and you’d be better parting out the old banger.

If there is some sentimental value on the busted CAT bike, that may sway things as well.

Best of luck with that one!

Or bugger it all and buy a 04 model WR450, I know where there is one going at the moment.

Couple of scratches and white marks but i’m sure you could remove these with a heat gun.

    Cheers

The rattle in the other one has me thinking it will require spannering as well, so if we are pulling engines apart we might as well fix the one we have and have say $1500 bucks to spare.

I reckon you should rejuvinate old trusty. Sound like you could spend $3K on the other one and still have issues. At least you have an idea of what’s wrong with the CAT bike.

That or spank the $3k on the new bike, make the best bike and keep the rest for spares.

Might be the way to go MOTO.Then rebuild the other as time goes on.
Hey X you think it is a good bike? You have seen it and i haven’t.

 Hey Chris I like your thinking, thanks Buddy;)

seriously though Mick I reckon you are better off keeping the cat and doing it up. You then know what condition the engine is in. you also dont have to worry about finding buyers for the other Non bling parts:laugh: and having a half torn apart bike in your shed in a thousand pieces sucks as you will always be tripping over it,(trust me on that one:dry:) What are the linkages suspension brakes wheels etc like on the both bikes? as these parts are the big ticket items
best of luck with your decision

I agree fix your own one, the outlay doesn’t seem too bad and it is a known quantity, the rest is pure emotion of buying another cycle.

Yes it is a known quantity, that’s why we might go buy the other one. The CAT XR is getting a little tired after TRIPPER has flogged it. Buckled rims etc.

Not quite a basket case yet, a ton of TLC and about $1200 would see it back on the trails again.Although I will admit at the moment the best part of the bike is the Number plate XR-60.
I already have another actual basket case in boxes at home so we might be able to build one gooden out of the two in the future.

Hey Mick, your love of all things XR is highly admirable and I think I might have another option for you:P ,since you’ve got a large spare parts cupboard already I was thinking if your going to spend 3grand on a non runner why not buy my 600:) sweet motor, full staintune exhaust, new chain/sprockets plus more for the same money:woohoo: and as a bonus it’s already got some of your parts on it:laugh:
