I’ve been circling the pre 90 MX scene for a while, seeing what’s happening. i’m 42 so the 85-90 models are pretty clear in my memory from going into my local Honda dealer, Rick Andrews at Waitara and Procycles with Yamaha and Suzuki. i remember seeing the 125’s and 250’s flying off the floor, but the 500’s just sat there. Procycles had a RM500F in 1989, they were that bad.
What i also clearly remember was getting off early 90’s MX bikes and onto XR’s. What a revelation. No power but great turning abilities and a fun factor that made me and a whole bunch of guys addicted in the 1989-1999 period before 4 strokes became the norm.
So, it only follows that my pre 90 bike should be an XR600. I just bought one, 1989 model, no 3rd/4th/5th gear. Standard problem. i’d like to make it similar to the bike i rode in 1994-1995.
What i have is a bit of a shopping list of parts, hopefully someone has some bits lying around in their shed or i’ll scour ebay. I know most of this stuff will be pretty old/rare but i thought i’d ask anyway
XR250 tank, 1986-1995
XR250 seat, 1986-1995
XR250 sidecovers 1986-1995
CR125/250/500 wheels/hubs 1989-1994
CR125/250/500 forks 1988
Ballards headers- these were made locally by a guy in blacktown. they were silver/chrome and had no markings other than being TIG welded.
XR600 bottom end or gearbox.
XR600 piggyback shock, 1991-1999
XR600 swingarm and disc brake caliper/master cylinder 1991-1999November 8, 2012 at 10:12 am #232190I have a few of those things you need.
Complete bottom end for a XR600.
The shock and the front caliper/master cylinder as well
Contact me via Tb. He has my number.
November 8, 2012 at 10:14 am #232204Forgot to add that the bottom end has the coarse spline mainshaft
November 10, 2012 at 2:41 am #232191We have a 1990 XR600 complete for sale. Its in good condition mechanically, the bloke who traded tells me it has a big bore kit in it thats done low km but i cant verify that. Its sounds and feels pretty fresh to me and is not smokey or rattly.
Its all very original in the bodywork and has all original road gear working, it has an xr’s only slip on muffler and its the 2 header model that runs 2 headers all the way to muffler. It would pass a roadworthy if we where to sell it with rego.
Its got a fair amount of corrossion on the alloy on engine cases and other alloy parts but apart from that its reasonably tidy for its age.
If anyones keen on OBT I would sell it for what it owes us, we traded it and have given it a run on the showroom floor but I would rather sell it to someone who knows what they are in for, its not brand new after all.
No rego $1,900. P. 0265836655 speak to Rory.November 22, 2012 at 12:51 pm #232192Ok, a couple of pistons have turned up 104.7mm. Got 2 just in case of an accident.
Stock 600 is 97mm bore and 80mm stroke, 591cc 650L is 100mm bore and 82mm stroke, 644cc.
So, if i use the 104.7mm piston with the long stroke crank i get 706cc. Good for some.
I’m going to use the 75mm stroke crank and 104.7 bore so we get 646cc.
Why? When there is no replacement for displacement!
I want to get the bore x stroke ratio up.
A CRF 450 is 96mm bore and 62mm stroke, stroke to bore ratio is .65
the XR stock is .82 and the 104.7×75 is .72.
More rpm means more wear but what price do you put on fun?November 23, 2012 at 9:00 am #232193Would love to see pics of this beast when your done mate !
December 23, 2012 at 10:17 pm #232823Ok, so we are progressing along.
The donor bike cost $1200. TB reckons i must be a visionary as it was such a POS.
Step one , strip bike, sell of junk i don’t need. Front and rear wheels, triple clamps, forks, shock, tank seat.
Throw plastics away, throw cracked swingarm away, airbox cracked.
What am i left with? A 1989 XR600 frame and engine. Sold the excess for $850 so the frame and engine owes me $350.
Wet blast frame. i have an attachment for the pressure washer that turns it into a wet blaster. Have to wear a raincoat while using it but it’s pretty good. They are about $100 and are really useful for moss covered pavers, motorcycle frames and skid steer loaders…..
Frame is ugly, standard problems. Sidestand has been ripped off and rewelded by farmer Joe. Just to make sure his welding stuck he made multiple layers of slag and re-enforced it by welding in bits of and EH Holden. Most of the engine mount tabs are also cracked courtesy of the “grade 8.8” racing stainless steel allen head cap screws that adorned this machine. WTF people think a 1.5mm pitch thread can generate the clamping force a 1.25mm bolt that is designed to stretch?! Anyway, the engine has been fretting in the mounts and making a mess. Rear subframe brace is cracked and has more EH Holden welded in, exhaust mount is cracked.
2 hours with an angle grinder and the frame looks much better. There is a lot of EH holden on the floor.
Engine was much the same. cam lobe burnt from lack of oil, all rocker cover bolts stripped or have helicoils that are pulling out. Piston is a 100mm Wiseco that’s saveable (woohoo) Con rod has been replaced with a hotrod that’s worn out (ProX rods are much better in the XR, hotrods don’t seem to last)
Rest of the engine is not too bad. Gearbox is the WORST i have ever seen. I’ll post photos.
have to say a big thanks to Popey here (Kamakazi-Rocket) for the bead blasting/paint stripping effort on the engine cases. It took hours to strip the super industrial strength paint off before it was clean enough to send to Dave Mac for vapourblasting.
The shopping has been going Ok too. Got a set of 89 CR hubs for $20 each. Keihin 41mm FCR carb for $200, 89 KX 500 46mm conventional forks for $300, swingarm for $65, a pair of new XR250 tanks for $200 delivered.December 23, 2012 at 10:31 pm #232194It’s not pretty

Better place to start.December 23, 2012 at 10:49 pm #232198
December 24, 2012 at 12:14 am #234385105mm piston, supposed to be 11:1 but Wiseco are always optimistic with stated CR. Will take some machining to get there. Works out to 692.8cc with the stock rod/crank combo.
December 24, 2012 at 12:38 am #234391Hey Nick, I still have those gear clusters here packed ready for someway for them to get to Sydney.
Any other gear box bits you are needing?
December 24, 2012 at 12:43 am #234395Hi Mick,
The gearbox is the only urgent bit, mine looks like a train wreck, burnt shift forks, dogs all but snapped off….
So, basically mainshaft, countershaft and forks. I can cobble an engine together for the first meeting in mid Feb with the 100mm piston then make a short stroke later when i have a spare engine. Will be alloy welding again by then and i have the templates for the big fin head that i used to cut out with a bandsaw at Ballards….great job that was. -
