Watching with interest. Almost bought a sentimental tear to my eye.
At least it’s in good hands.
Better hurry up. I just read in Trailzone Steve want’s to take a WR450 on the APC
April 14, 2012 at 10:41 am #219692Yes we are building a WR that Steve is riding it’s in the workshop now. The XR is still getting built a mate of steve’s from the states is riding it in the APC as was always the plan. Progress has been slow with everything going on, the new wheel sets have arrived. The build for both bikes need to hit top gear soon or we will run out of time to build and test. This thread will get busy soon enough

Good to hear you guys are doing the WR build. Have you got a thread started on this? I’m thinking of ADVing my WR
May 10, 2012 at 2:08 am #213096Hey TB how did you wire the Heated grips up ? If you hook into the light circuit the HG’s suck all the power. Also I rode home in the dark tonight and I reckon more light shines out of a queenslanders backside than the acerbis Diamond thing ive got fitted  any ideas on what the go is with a different stator or HID etc

The acerbis diamond is shit IMO we are doing a HID conversion on this one. The parts I think should be at home when I get back from Brissy so stay tuned

May 10, 2012 at 11:40 pm #221467The problem with the XR650 is that it doesnt run a Battery and the stator is only good for about 80 watts. Trying to find a suitable power supply for the heated grips is damn difficult.as the majority of available power is AC (the instructions actually say to hook into the lighting circuit) I can run the lights but not enough power goes to the Heated grips. turn the lights off and they work a treat. But being a commuter at the moment I really like having the headlights on all the time. This is why im thinking the best way to go is get the stator rewound or a modded one put in.Then do the HID mod. Anyone want to chime in im all ears.

May 10, 2012 at 11:43 pm #221468Hi TB,
It awesome the information that you (and others) are providing regarding APC builds and preparations.
I have actually signed up for the APC myself. I’m doing it my trust little WR250R (affectingly starting too be referred to as the “little Jigger”). Thankfully I have very good mate helping me and a local bike shop in Aberdeen is doing the work we can’t do.
My list of works is almost as long as yours for the XR. I have a few questions regarding braided brake lines. I am replacing the current brake lines, however I wasn’t really sure on needing to use braided lines or even what options would be best on small bike like a WRR. What lines are you putting on the XR and why? What’s the advantage of having braided lines over others? I know not all types and brands are equal, but are there advantages of some sorts over others, particularly considering the usage they will be under i.e. long term trail use rather than needing race high performance standards.Cheers,
Flying FishMay 10, 2012 at 11:48 pm #221505Doesn’t it have a battery  Really didn’t known that
Two options Ollie sadly for you both involve spending money and Aldi stock neither
Upgrade your stator yes, best I know of is here you may find cheaper but make sure it’s a Ricky. There is also a guy in SA that rewinds yours name fails me at the minute I will post it later when I think of it.
Second- upgrade your lights as mentioned before to a HID setup, benefit here is you will have better lights and can still run your heated grips
There is a third and that’s get warmer gloves
Hope that helps
BTW the heated grip option has been removed from this built because they are not worth the drama on a bike like an XR in my experience

Flying FishHi FF are you the young lady that was to visit Steve at Advanture Moto this week to check out his mighty WR 250R?
Braided lines biggest advantage over conventional rubber hoses is reduced bulging when heavy brake force is applied. This results in improved brake response and lever feel and can reduce stopping distances.
They are stronger and reduce the change of being damaged on the trailI am in Brisbane this week and have been and checked out this local supplier
Run good fluid as well, will post up one Lefty put me on too when I get home
If you need any help getting your bike ready etc please don’t hesitate getting in touch. I will be home in Sydney next week

May 11, 2012 at 12:34 am #221514Hi TB,
Yep thats me.I was hoping to call in last Tuesday, but he got held up in Canberra, and unfortunatly I couldn’t really wait. I also havent had a chance to reorganise, dam work seems to get in the way  Not to mention knowing how busy Steve is.
I need to get down there soon to look at the gear and parts I need, not to mention just picking Steve brain. Thanks for the offer on the help/advice. Perhaps when I manage to find time to get to Sydney I might give you a call and you can run your eye over my WRR.
I’m hooking up with Kat and Alyssa tomorrow for a ride. Can’t wait to meet her and talk APC.
Thanks for the info on the brake lines. Definitely worth considering.
Cheers,
