Well 50k on and nothing lasts forever it seems. When coming through commission track on the two day ride I found the bike hanging in gear sometimes, not every gear shift sometimes 10 mins between baulked shifts. When I got home I pulled the oil filter and it was good so I spoke with Nick at Tekniks and we decided to check the net. Seems as though a few Teneres world wide had failed a small bearing on the rocking selector arm. Symptoms are the same parts ordered and away we go
The little arm with the little bearing in question
As it has done 50k and 850+ hrs I figured a new piston would be in order, water pump rebuild kit and a timing chain
Drain the oil have a beer and pull the clutch cover as I reckon we can do it in frame. Pulled the clutch plates and hub have a beer. Then I find this shit in the bottom of the cases and start having multiple beers
So I whip the engine out
Coming out
Out
Engine on the bench
Nick knocking it apart
Big shout out to Nick here at Tekniks he is staying back to get apart so I can get parts ordered tomorrow. People may not realise Nick does a lot more than suspension. He has done all head work for all the bikes I have done Fish’s DR, Nickj’s CRF to name a few.
Will post up the pictures when it’s apart. I was a bit disappointed at first but considering where it been and what it’s done it’s ok at this stageTB
December 21, 2012 at 9:18 am #23428750000 ain t a bad run TB with you riding it no offence just on the gas. picked a good time to be fixing it (parts availabilty may suck).to hot to ride anyway but spose you got plenty of other bikes.lucky it did not lock up by the look ofthat
December 21, 2012 at 9:35 am #234288TB is this something completely unexpected for a bike with these klm on it
Or is this what i can look forward too/dread happening to my tenere
Not at all mechanically minded but it looks rather expensive :pinch:

Yes and no James, I ride it for all I can all the time. If I had known about the bearing in the picture I would have replaced it, Nick can do it in the bike it turns out. $35 and happy days, mine split the bearing causing it to not select correctly and result a broke gear
If you look closely you cab see the split in the bearing outer
TB
December 21, 2012 at 12:08 pm #234317So its stripped, broken 3rd gear
The bearing we thought failed had indeed failed, see the split out case
Sits on the gear stick input shaft
Good news is Nick can do in the the bike if you get it before failure, if you have a tenere ring Nick at 30k and book it in, cost less than 3 cartons of beer
Cases being split
Piston looked incredibility good for 50k
Bore still has cross hatch
Piston is a forged item and measured up with no wear  Some slight wear in the top ring land but thats to be inspected
Heads in great condition, looks good a side benifet or fuel injection
Other than the broken dog on 3rd gear the box and the rest of the engine is in like new condition I am amazed
3rd gear, missing half the dog teeth
As you can see there is no wear on the remaining dog teeth

December 21, 2012 at 1:00 pm #234289Hope Yamaha have the gears in stock. Wishful thinking perhaps. May as well throw a timing chain at it while we are there. Ill have a goof look at the rear of the bearings tomorrow after its all washed up.
I’ll strip the head too, give the seats a cut. Might port the head if I’m bored!December 21, 2012 at 9:34 pm #234318Thats a relief TB,sounds like prevention better than cure.
I have an awful lot to learn and seeing your bike in a million pieces meant panic stations
to me.
December 21, 2012 at 10:31 pm #234290Great Thread!!!!!
Impressive condition for the amount of use(abuse)  you have given her….
December 21, 2012 at 11:26 pm #234332I will be booking my Tenere in with Nick in the new year, I’m just about to drop the oil out for the second time since I have had her.
30k on her now so it can’t hurt to get Nick to have a look.PTW
December 21, 2012 at 11:30 pm #234336I’ll do more than look, a few gaskets and the shift drum sector bearing is what you will have replaced. No sense in breaking gearboxes when it’s preventable.
December 22, 2012 at 12:12 am #234291:whistle:
PREVENTION always better than a cure they sayGreat review for the Tenere durability though TB
You are not exactly kind to the machine when on the trails, and one could safely say it has done some hard miles the past 2 yearsDecember 22, 2012 at 1:50 am #234292Engine is clean, where are my gears?!

He`s probably on his way back from Melbourne or somewhere in Aus with parts in his hand :laugh:Nice work on the engine clean
She`s sparklin` :woohoo:December 22, 2012 at 2:38 am #234339Last night TB was a bit panicked that there were wayyy too many parts coming out of the engine and i would not be able to put it back together. Wonder how many cat and Cummins powered truck drivers have said that to TB? Hmmm.
Anyway, all packed up now waiting for early Jan for some parts to arrive

We have a turbo wash that is great for cleaning engines, the cases were it in for a half hour, there is little trace of red dust left.
