December 22, 2012 at 2:41 am #234342Having problems posting photos, not supposed to be blank!
Anyway, had a good look over it and we need a countershaft bearing, the one behind the countershaft sprocket, it’s not happy. Might be from an overly tight chain, pretty common. :whistle:The oil pump strainer is more of a worry, it had come away from the pickup and was resting on the casing. The oil pump has a plastic drive gear so if any large particles get into the oil pump and lock it up the plastic gear strips and you have no idea it’s happened  Just keep riding till you hear the big end trying to escape.
I clipped it back together with the 4 very dicky looking tangs and it’s hard to pull apart BUT i think a big case out on a spoon drain could dislodge it (normal riding for TB) So i’ll find a way to secure it. (TB proof) Have to split the cases to remove it, if i was doing an in-frame repair on the selector drum arm the best i could do is push it back up.

December 22, 2012 at 5:48 am #234344Very interesting thread , great to see it all unfold step by step. I know Nick makes it look easy but I have learnt something from this , no matter what bike your riding maintainance and being aware of potential issues is essential.
I’m really looking forward to the next chapter
Nick
December 22, 2012 at 10:07 pm #234346Well I have shared this on ADV rider in the Tenere thread in the hope it saves some poor other bugger from going down this path. Prevention is better and cheaper than cure
Brian at Team Moto Yamaha who yesterday chased and chased gears for me he is a legend! Sadly we are screwed until the 7th at least. Brian has also looked after me price wise, so guys if you have a Yamaha and need bits even if you cant get there ring him and tell him you are a bull, that Greg sent you he does good work and offers good service. (02) 9421 0696Called in to see Nick yesterday arvo, we put the swingarm bolt back in and it is now able to be moved off the lift stand so its now just waiting.

Hi James, mate there isnt any real bad luck as such, maybe I made it sound like that but i didnt mean to I am as happy as a pig in shit really
The problem with having one of the highest mileage Teneres around (that model) is that I will be the first to discover such problems. The info I got regarding the bearing on the shift arm was from a high mileage Tenere in england I think on XT660.com
From here on here I will do 30k put a shift arm in, another 30k and a shift arm in and so on. I reckon its would be good for another 80 + k before it gets torn down again
Mate this thing has been banged, crashed, thrashed, held flat for hrs into towns generally ridden way out side its design parameters  Its a good thing and I believe the best single cylinder all round adv bike on the market that can be purchased new
TB
December 22, 2012 at 11:47 pm #234353In another 50-80k it will need a rod and main bearings anyway. The piston would go again but the top ring land is pretty worn. That’s not a problem with the piston, it’s actually a good quality forged unit. Its more a reflection at being ridden like a WR450.
I’d expect at 100-130k it will need some valves too.
There are no single cylinder engines that don’t need a freshen up at 80k. This bike has just had a problem with a failed bearing that’s made us rebuild 30k earlier. If the bearing didn’t fail I think it would have made 80k.December 23, 2012 at 12:00 am #234354Wow that many klm still to travel
I had no idea you could just keep rebuilding the bikes and sending them back out too play :woohoo: :woohoo:
Better not let the wife see this post she will never let me get a new one :pinch:
Especially seeing as went and spoke to Chris at Suttos on Thursday about the 990 adventure
January 11, 2013 at 10:13 am #234355Hey TB,

March 17, 2013 at 9:12 am #235356Thought I better update this thread sorry James. The engine went back together no problems, Nick put the cases back together and I reassembled the rest more or less.
Piston in
Nick cleaned the head up and did a real nice sweet job. He gave me a run down on the ins and outs of porting and polishing what should be what shouldn’t what to look for what to avoid.
Look at the rollers on the cam follower, 50k and 890hrs not a mark bloody good engine
Once it was started I checked the oil pressure and washed the bike and the engine area down. Road testing showed it had more mid range then before. When I got home I thought it had an oil leak but it was too much chain lube
Since then it hasn’t moved and with the new one coming well?TB

Rumour has it that there is another coloured Tenere yet to make an appearance I wonder
January 17, 2014 at 5:05 am #234293Thanks 4 the time and care for the write up. Now I’m worried.
Any chance I can get the part number of faulty rocker arm bearing. I’ve looked at the parts manual but can’t figure out which part it is. This is all new vocabulary for me.
