I’m looking for some guidance.
I bought a secondhand XT660Z a few months ago which the previous owner had ‘cartridge emulators’ fitted in the front and no other alterations to either front or back, that I know of.
I weigh 115 kgs and carry some gear with me when riding. I found both ends a little soft for me and two weeks ago took out the number plate, indicators and ripped part of the back off in the process of hitting an erosion channel. The back just totally bottomed out. I found that the preload was down on #1 so I bumped it up to #7 and it was much better, but I still bottomed out on the same erosion channel yesterday and bent the replacement frame for the number plate.
I think it’s time I did something as the SA Govt charge $22 for each number plate I order!!!!!.
I was going to do the Ohlins thing but after reading Nick’s comments on this forum have decided to ask about the Teknic gear.
I do virtually all off road, Flinders Ranges and the like. Gravel and dirt roads with some bits of knarly sections thrown in to keep the blood pressure up.
I’ve got access to an ex Yamaha mechanic with his head screwed on so he can fit everything for me.
Any suggestions??

Nick will chime in tomorrow I am sure. I think they worked out they could build or supply the same Ohlins cheaper or the same price as OS but thats just a base customer Ohlins shock. The standard shock once modified is good as well. I have a half Ohlins half Sachs which is awesome its sort of a Nicks work in progress development test bed. Also when they modified our forks they brazed up some holes and then fitted the emulators..
Anyways better wait for the man

January 15, 2012 at 10:47 pm #214569Thanks TB. All new to me so I’ll wait with great enthusiasm. I need to sort this cr*p out as it’s affecting my confidence on this bike. I don’t need the best technology just something that will hold up under the er……strain!
I can land the Ohlins with change out of $1000 and I reckon I read on here that Nick can do them for a little more than that.
But, being honest, no amount of suspension is going to improve my lack of skills, it’s just to stop the bike from doing some pretty dumb things.
cheers

There are 2 ohlins shocks for the Tenere, Listed below are the $ i sell them for. I also fit the right spring FOC.
YA817 OHLINS XT660 Z TENERE 46PRC $1115.00
YA054 OHLINS XT660 Z TENERE S46DR1 $879.00For the fork, you need springs and to check out if the damper rods have been correctly modified.
I have built a frankenshock for TB as he was using the stock revalved/resprung sachs shock but he was tearing the lugs off the spring adjuster. Given that it’s ridden more like an enduro bike it was the best answer to get a stronger body/cylinder head. No one else has done this to a Sachs shock so i don’t think it’s a big problem, there are not many TB’s out there….

Maybe it is a BIG problem Nick

January 19, 2012 at 7:49 pm #214766Thanks Nick. I agree, I don’t give the bike a hard time (intenionally) so maybe a reworked rear and springs etc in the front might do the job. I’ll talk to the bike mechanic and discuss how we go about it and maybe he or I will ring to see how we get it done.
Cheers
