Thousands to flock to Orange for Yamaha MX Cross Cup
As many as 340 dirt bike racers and more than 3000 spectators will head to the Orange showgrounds on Saturday, January 31, for the inaugural round of the Yamaha MX Cross Cup.
The event is expected to attract some of the best racers in the country and the hottest local talent.
The race is being run by successful motorcycle event promoters, Dirt Bike Promotions (DBP) – a family-run company who are Orange locals.
DBP’s Phil Sargent said while the Yamaha MX Cross Cup was a new series, the family had been running stadium motocross events at the Orange showgrounds for nearly a decade.
Sargent, who is a former motocross champion, said this year’s race would boast day/twilight entertainment for the whole family.
He said racers would battle it out from 11am to 7pm on the man-made track, constructed from more than 12,000 tonnes of dirt.
“We’re really looking forward to the event… all our previous Orange races have brought a lot to the local economy and they’re a really great family day out,” Sargent said.
“Motocross as a sport is fantastic for families… my two sons will both be racing.
“I always look forward to Orange especially because it’s where I grew up… when we travel from one end of Australia to the other throughout the year it’s nice to be able to come back home to the town we love.”
Local pro rider, Brodie Hartin, is one racer who “can’t wait” for the event.
“I always love riding in Orange. Hopefully I’ll have a bit better luck than I did last year when I had bike troubles,” Hartin said.
“But I’ve been training hard, so I should be prepared… It’s gonna be great riding in front of my home crowd, they always get you going.”
Gates at the Orange Showgrounds will open at 11am, racing will finish at about 7pm. Ticket Prices: Adult – $15.00, Youth (14-U16yrs) – $12.00, Child (5-13yrs) – $9.00, Under 5yrs are Free. Family (2 adult & 2child) – $40.00.
The Yamaha MX Cross Cup is a six-round series combining three different types of motocross, with two stadium, two grass track and two ‘standard’ outdoor MX races.
The series will visit five different New South Wales’ locations: Orange (January 31), Clarence (Lithgow, February 21 and 22), Dunedoo (May 2 and 3), Canberra (July 11 and 12) and Maitland (October 24). Orange will also host the 5th round on August 22 and 23.
The series boasts classes for everyone from Nippers – four to eight-year-olds on 50cc bikes – to Clubman, Women’s All Powers, Pro Lites and Pro Open.
