So in following with the 10,000kms on a Tenere post I did 6 months ago here is the 20,000km update. There have been some changes I have made to the bike for whatever reason. I will also cover the tyres run in the 20,000 and what I feel works and doesn’t and why. Please note these are all my opinion but I have changed things that haven’t worked, been honest about the things that haven’t and have. I have spoken with people that know or spent hours researching everything I try to save money for me in the long run. All the extras, the bike and I have been tested beyond the parameters I thought I ever use the bike for. Hopefully something here helps someone else

To understand everything I have done in the 20000kms you need to read the first post here first, this thread adds to that one the 2nd 10,000kms as such

First change in the last 10,000kms is the rear racks and bags. I have a set of Barrett racks for my Wolfman Bags. Jason at Barrett Exhausts has manufactured these quality racks. There were some problems with the first batch of racks but Jason was all over it and listened to what we thought needed to be done to strengthen the racks. I had the pre production racks (my bike was used as the jig to make the first set) mine never broke but Jason got them back and modified them to the new spec for piece of mind.

First set, notice no back brace between the racks under the tail light assembly

And the thicker top mounting tabs, thicker because that was where Nickj’s broke

Cost of the racks? Well the racks came as a set from Adventure Moto the OBT deal is $600 for bags and racks
Rating of the racks 9 out of 10 because they are now strong, look good and the after sales service from Barrett’s is excellent

Wolfman Bags. I had Andy Strapz bags for the first 10,000kms and liked them and still do, I think they are a great product. That said I always wanted water proof bags, not water resistant but 100% water proof (they are I can vouch personally as I have submersed them and the bike completely for a good 30 seconds) The only other thing that I didn’t like about the Andys was that no matter how many straps you used (normally 3 a bag for me) they always flapped around and looked like they were falling off, they never did but still looked scrappy in my opinion. The Andys hold more and I was worried about the carrying capacity but everything fitted on the unsupported High Country 3 states ride with room to spare.

    The new Wolfman Bags

They sit so well they never move, they are easy to fit and remove see video below

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5R9CiDaJec&feature=player_embedded

Price under $300, comes in a set with the Barrett racks to suit the bags from Adventure Moto for under $600

Rating 10 out of 10 as they tick the boxes for me the Andys didn’t, that said the Andys are a good thing and locally made which is always something for me but not thins time.

    RallyMoto Steering Damper (rebadged MSC)

Previous damper fitted was a WER as stated in the 10,000km write up the damper never suited the heavier bike

    P8190013640x480.jpg

The damper has transformed the bike and made it very good in the sand and saves those moments when you clip the edge of a rolling rock

    IMGP0282.jpg

How to fit covered in the DIY section at Old Bull Trailriders and here in this thread

Price $795 from Adventure Moto, you will get an OBT discount on that price as well

Rating 8.5 out of 10 no higher cause it’s a bastard to fit seriously MSC dampers are good kit and Australian made

    Frame protectors from Touretech

    ac136a9d.jpg

    2f503ec4.jpg

Price dearer than they are worth but do a good job on protecting the paint I guess. Sorry really cant remember the price

I got a centre stand from off-the-road in Germany, mainly to make garage maintenance easy but also for road side tyre repairs.

The stand is made by sw motech

    d46329fd.jpg

It only took 20 minutes and 2 rums to fit , easy as !

    eeabd8f9.jpg

    50edcbfe.jpg

Cheap and a good thing. The spring seems strong enough to stop from bouncing when landing windrows etc. I do cable tie it as well on the left side to be sure

Water pump protector from off-the-road in Germany

    797aebd6.jpg

Cheap and between the crash bars, the bash plate and this the pump should be protected

    High Front Guard

I purchased a new High front guard (same as Nickj’s) and fitted it as the original one I tried (see the 10k write up) didn’t work, no fault of the guard it was that I picked the wrong guard

    New guard

    Price under $40

    Rating?? Haven’t used it yet

    Rotopax fuel Cells

I just purchased a set of Rotopax for my bike to extend the fuel range to around 600 kms or more in the right conditions. I decided on the Rotopax after looking at bladders etc but didn’t like the fact that any extra fuel would need to be carried high and more than likely on the rear rack. The Rotopax lets the fuel be carried lower. With the packs fitted my Wolfman soft panniers just fit around the outside but more on the Wolfman soft panniers later.

The Rotopax come in all different sizes for fuel including 3.8L, 7.6l and 11.4L. I bought the 3.8s as that will give me a total of 31 to 32 litres of fuel on the bike. The beauty of the packs is I don’t need to fill them and don’t have to ride around a big tank all the other time. The packs do move my bags out around 10cm which I can’t see being a problem as the bags are narrower then the Andys I had before.

    a7c22993.png

    8d232db7.png

The pax are mounted on a locking mechanism that attaches to an alloy plate that is attached to the racks

The locking mechanism bolted to the plate with two bolts, easily removed when the pax aren’t required

Barkbuster Bar End WeightsI purchased a set of Barkbuster bar end weights as when the barkbusters were fitted the factory bar end weights need to be removed. Being that it is a large single there is an element of vibration and I had suffered pins and needles in my fingers more than once during long stints in the saddle. Since fitting the Barkbuster weights I can’t remember it having happened since.

Price can’t remember or find the invoice sorry

Rating good very good never had pins and needles since 9/10

    Michelin Ultra Heavy Duty tubes

I switched the tubes when I got the bike, I have been unable to get a 17inch for the rear. I have only had two flat tyres since I started running Michelin Ultras in 2004. The first flat was last year’s birthday ride, a rear tube I had been running since 2004 (yes 6 years through 2 bikes) that had done over 50,000kms and the flat was caused by a railway spike!! The other was at the Hampton ride this year and caused by the tyre spinning on the rim and ripping the valve out of the tube. Both on the XR, so I figured good enough for the front of the Tenere and have had no flats in 20,000kms.

    P9220008640x480.jpg

    See how thick they are

    P9220009640x480.jpg

Price under $40 on special at Sutto’s

Rating 10/10 why not two flats in 70,000kms (three bikes)

    Wolfman Top Bag

It’s a small, I carry my tent, self inflating mattress, self inflating pillow, jumper, head torch and wet weather gear and there is so much room left actually the straps are at their smallest setting! It features a roll down top same as the soft panniers and is 100% water proof (again can personally vouch for that, the river dunking remember)

    P3290031640x480.jpg

    P3290030640x480.jpg

    Tyres
As written in the 10k post I had tried the TCK80 rears and they had no traction and wore out in under 4000kms, grip 4/10 longevity 8/10 rating 6/10

    P9220014640x480.jpg

    P9220013640x480.jpg

    MT21 Pirellis

MT21 rear it’s a 130/90-18 good traction latest less than 4000kms and was worn out, traction was ok

    P9220010640x480.jpg

These gripped ok, did nearly 5000kms but heal and toed real bad and I have only used one because of the heal and toeing

    Dunlop 606 rears

Great tyre heaps of grip but wear real quick I cant get more than 3000kms out of one and I am sure Nick hasn’t got much more if any more

    606 Fronts

    Dunlop_D606_Dual_Sport_dirt_tires.jpg

I don’t like them, they wear ok but heal and toe good for around 4000kms

    They are well priced (cheap)

    Rating 7.5/10

    Dunlop 907 front

The 907 is a super aggressive front that I couldnt understand was street legal

    104_0029640x480.jpg

    104_0030640x480.jpg

    104_0028640x480.jpg

The 907 is my front of choice at the moment, I can get nearly 5000kms from one and they dont heal and toe anywhere near as much as anything else I have tried

Price $100 or there abouts depending on your buying power

Rating 9/10 they stick like you know what to a blanket. Bit skatey in the wet on the black top but I dont ride much of that

    Mitas E09 Rears

This tyre was recommended to me by Steve at Adventure Moto, Steve raved about them and swore black and blue that it was a good thing. I tried one on the 3 states ride and loved it, it wears well and has done over 4500kms already and has 1000kms left in it I reckon. It drives out of corners unreal, Nick and I rode the whole 3 states in close company and he said many a time I had drive where his 606 with the same mileage was spinning.

    26032011053.jpg

    26032011051.jpg

Price, expensive but you get what you pay for. I don’t know the price I forget ring Steve at Adventure Moto

Rating 8.5 out of 10 (didn’t get 9.5 because it is the worst tyre I have ever fitted)

I have set a spare clutch cable up beside the current cable and will be doing the same with the pull cable on the throttle soon

    Case end

    04a1ef4f.png

    Clutch lever end

    4a56c00f.png

    Positives

Fuel economy is incredible on the 3 states ride it averaged around 19.3kms for a litre of fuel! It does everything well and is a pleasure to ride for long periods, will easily kill a 10 hour, 500 plus kilometre day and you are still fresh at the end of the day. We proved that on the 1100km two day ride Grafton ride in Feb this year.

It will go anywhere, Fish was amazed we ride them up 10 steps on the 3 states ride and they rode up Mt Pinnabar so well. Downhills are the only thing that really test you
    208533_2068975563194_1208988196_2544088_2609691_n.jpg

They look great and always seem to attract people when parked up at the front of the pub or servo.

    Problems
    Grip Heaters

My right hand grip heater stopped working on the high country ride I am not sure what is wrong with it, its annoying and I need to have a look at it

The cush drive rubbers wear to fast but Yamaha have responded through Team Moto Yamaha at Blacktown. They are replacing the next set under warranty and are looking at the problem as 4000kms and they are rooted and you will get a vibration when accelerating. This work will be done next week when I drop the bike off.

Good review TB, I will try a Mitas / Dunlop 907 combo for the next ride too, my Dunlop 606 had done 3100km and has no centre knob left and chunks missing from the side knobs. Great tyre just no longevity for adventure riding !

    #200660

Great post TB, 20,000 and still looks like new and plenty more adv k’s to come. I reckon you should keep this bike and ride the wheeels off it!! would be really interested to see how many k’s you could put on her before it needed a refresh. maybe you should have a word with Yamaha Australia!!B)

Great write-up mate. I would love to get hold of one of these bikes and I will if I can ever work out how to afford two bikes. I can’t think of anything better than gearing up and heading west on a Tenere. (Except holding an MX bike pinned in top gear through the desert, but this will change in a few years)
I intend to get one one day but not just yet. But when I do i will certainly be re-reading your updates to get the good stuff.

    Cheers.

Well done TB. I have fitted the latest ralleMoto steering damper , keep your standard bars , the unit is just a little smaller than a packet of cigarette’s works a treat , tyres 606’s Im not as heavy on the throttle Im getting 4500kms rear and looks like 6000kms front,I run them at 30 psi hardly any heel an toe to the front. Tenere has clocked up 21,000kms. CHOOT.

Yeah interesting the tyre pressures mate I run 28 in the front and 22 in the rears. I will go to 30 and see if that helps thanks.

How about a photo of the new damper mate, they make a difference dont they

exellent review TB, just wondering if you have tried the Michelin T63 tyres? Also have you installed the Kev fuel mod, and if so has it made much of a difference to performance? I have put the mod in my XT and cant really tell if it has made many difference – though I have had great advice from Kev.

I have fitted the Kev Mod Jim yes. It does make a difference from the bottom to the midrange, Nickj and I have run our two Teneres side by side (mine heavier because I am fat  ) and mine really does have a stroger bottom and end. The other thing we both noticed when riding with the Kev mod is the snatcheness (word  ) off the bottom with the throttle is gone or greatly reduced.

T63 Michelins are something I tried to get ages ago and was told (wrongly  ) they werent made in a 17inch anymore, I found out when Moose fronted the High Country ride with one on they are . Scott at Sutto’s confirmed this later. I will be giving them a try but I have all my adventure tyres sorted for the rest of this year

Thanks TB, if I can get some T63s I will report back on how they went, hopefully going on a desert ride in August

hello trailboss, need some help!!!, just got a steering damper like the one you have (ralle-moto Adventure). At the front of the Ignition, the pin for the damper is meant to be bolted, but there is no holes for this, did you drill holes or drill out the pins that are there, can you let me know?

by the way, great report on the bike and gear, very helpful
