ok so i’ve been looking around for a sub 250 bike for a while for the bride and step son to ride. cheaper nsw reg.
i cannot afford an EXC or anything later model ATM so i’ve been trolling evilbay, gumtree, tradingpost etc. etc. for a cheaper bike.
at 5am or thereabouts this morning i scored a DT 200 a bit of a pig in a poke. the listing was very short. and i asked the seller what year and kms etc. and how soon they’d like it picked up if i bid and per chance won. all i got was the timeframe to pick up..
anyway now a short story is long, i’m open to all the info i can get.
as the title says what tips and tricks work well. wikipeadia states the blaster 200 shares the same cases and crank, piston and that. but i don’t know how trustworthy the info is.
at this stage i don’t know what year. but going by google is about 89-91/92.
i’ll post up a pic once i can.

August 15, 2012 at 5:50 pm #227850The DT 200 are a great bike. The two i had were almost un-breakable. God knows I tried.
The only probs I had were :The Battery needs to working properly as the power valve on the exhaust runs off it.
One of mine had a busted woodruff key in the fly wheel when I bought it. Got it cheap. Cheap to fix. Hard prob to find.
Never had any prob with the oil injection. It worked well.
I have a complete set of New Clutch Plates if you need them. Bought them as the clutch was slipping but it had grooves in the basket. A File fixed the prob. :ohmy:
From original I changed the jettng which made a major difference. It was a long time ago. Ill try to dig out the size.The Yamaha WR of the same vintage had very similar running gear.

GavAugust 15, 2012 at 6:14 pm #227853I have a mate that used to ride one,pretty quick bike in its time for what it was intended for. Kept up with a lot of the big bore two strokes in the singles and techniacl stuff. I think the sub frame may have had a few issues not sure been a long time. Keep an eye out on Ebay and also try to x reference part numbers on some US sites Drew.

Mr Cycles doesn’t list the DT 200 but has the YSF? Blaster listed.
here be the beast. pic from evilbay. a photo taken from the screen so not the best.
and it was about 1/3-1/2 the price of others of the same vintage going by visual cues.
but looking at the seat etc. it’s about the right price. and was within my budget.
all have to do now is organise to pick it up.
Jodie had already done the online L test a couple of times. :woohoo:

I rode a 1998 (I think) one only a few weeks ago and was pretty surprised how good it was. Nice and smooth, controllable, low seat height but still had some go when required. I like it so much I may keep an eye out for one for the Mrs. The 1999 KTM200 I bought for her a while back was no learners bike!
The DT would be a great bike too. I a really clean PE185 in Hamilton the other day and it has got me thinking about pulling my finger out and getting one of those IT175’s in my garage up and running. Maybe even add an IT490 for myself and go hit some vinduro’s up!

The DT200 community is still alive. I have seen some fine examples of restored DTs on yamahait.com.au
Biggest complaints were always forks and brakes. The shock wasn’t so crash hot either.
The blaster is more related to the WR engine than the DT. Be very careful buying blaster parts. Let yamahait and boats.net be your most visited sites.

i haven’t been game to post how much i won it at. until i physically see it and try to start it. they said it runs fine. but one person’s fine is another’s ordinary.
the bike was a shade under $610.00
cost to travel is all but irrelevant as i would have to travel to get a bike like this regardless. because of my current location.
and Moto, if you are looking, get onto Boony and the Tamworths. i spotted a 175 something on gumtree i think it was, just south of tamworth at a reasonable price. see if they have heard of it for sale. or seen local ads for it.

Way too optimistic thinking anyone’s wife will ride a DT200 happily. DT175 maybe. TTR250 a stretch.

why is that Axel? just out of curiosity.
i thought Moto said an EXC200 would be a stretch for a beginner.
jodie has had a YZ 125 and DR 250 in the past. her biggest concern with a bike is it suited to a height deprived :whistle: :pinch: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: person.
which leads to a Q? i forgot to ask in the opening post.
lowering link etc. availability? or do i look for platform riding boots?
August 15, 2012 at 11:12 pm #227889I have seen home made lowering links for a DT. Trailing links were longer I think.
A Kato 200 is like an F1 car to a DT200 Commodore. Absolute madness. I remember a bird riding an AssGass EC200 with platform soles (some here would have ridden with her too – nice lady). That EC was very much detuned to lug around.
The YZ and DR are interesting choices. One will want to stall constantly and the other will crush her alive when she fell over?? Well I’ve never met Jodie but then again if she is ok with a YZ and a DR the DT200 will be spot on then. The DT200 seat is like a lounge chair that you sit “in” not “on”. You might find it low enough already. Lower the front tubes and make up some lowering links and it’s about the same as a DT175!!
I have a mate in town here that has a DT175. It was registered and ridden around town. The exp chamber was emptied of baffles (DT200 has them too), the carb was bigger and some massaging of the ports yielded a nasty weapon that would bite hard. Very surprising.Really you’ll be fine with the DT200. There are a heap around still running and at wreckers too. They were a great bike back then. The USA didn’t get them. They only got WR200. The UK, Asia and Europe got the WR200 too but was called a DT200WR which was very similar to the WR200 (steel tank though and even more gay colours).
One of my favourite projects I saw was a WR200 engine slotted into a YZ125 chassis. Electric power in a light chassis. Nice. No rego sadly.
August 17, 2012 at 12:29 am #227916The Kato 200 was a little ripper and Tyne did alright on it but she did also flip it up a hill when she got a bit carried away and hit band. That bike took off like a rocket when it cam on the pipe. Even with me on it at over 100Kg it would lift the front wheel in all but top gear under hard acceleration.
Thanks for the info on the IT at Tamworth. I already have two so I don’t need another. If anyone comes across a tidy airbot or exhaust though let me know.
When I start ‘working from home’ the IT project may take off
Let us know how the DT goes, for $600 I don’t think you can wrong
