After enjoying this weeks ride with my son in the bush, I suggested to Moose that he and his sons might like to join Connor and I for another blast on Saturday. The boys thought that was a great idea and were keen to have a blast at trail riding as the main riding the boys do is motocross. So come Saturday the Young Bulls was formed and we loaded up the bikes and headed bush.
The team was as follows;
Connor (11) KX85
Alex (10) YZ85
George (12) KX85
Drew (12) CRF150R
Mick, Old Bull and mentor XR600
Moose, Sweep rider extaordinaire, Normally XR600 but decided to ride his YZ125.
These boys were a pleasure to take riding as they are all competent riders and
it is suprising how well these little bikes can handle the bush trails ,
The first test for them was the slippery log, which is daunting enough on a full size bike let alone on a small wheel 85.
The boys all had a crack at it.
Connors attempt wasn’t that tidy…
Drew had a bit of strife as well……
Young George was too quick for me and the camera and actually jumped the log in one go, which is the first time I have seen it done by any one, so full marks to the boy.
Moose who forgot that he was riding a 2 stroke with an expansion chamber hanging out the front, took it upon himself to show the boys how not to jump a log.
The boys had a ball on the single trail and we spent three hours ripping up and down some gnarly hills. Boys will be boys and when we pulled up for a few jelly snakes ,there was the usual sledging of one another that you hear on any trail ride as the boys took the piss out of one another.
Like most trail rides there was some incidents, the first was when we were coming down a big rocky hill when a rock took out Connors front wheel and he had a high side down the hill which corked his leg. To his credit he picked up the KX and attemted to catch the other boys and in his haste to catch up had another big off into a mud hole at the bottom of the hill. Alex stopped to help him and no sooner did they get going again a vine snapped Alex off his bike, no one was hurt so all was good. At this stage we decided it was time for a break..
Here is the boys enjoying what trail riding is all about, having some fun with your mates…….
.
From there we treated the boys to some tight single trail through the rain forest which they thought was great…..
Towards the end of the ride young George and Drew were hot on my heals so I picked up the pace a bit and the little buggers were still there, right behind me, George even being cheeky enough to show me his wheel on more than one occasion , so the pace quicked even more until I could no longer hear the scream of the little KX up my arse. George had fallen for the old stick at 45 degrees across the track and had a big off, breaking his brake lever off and getting all his brand new Chad Reed riding gear all messed up.
No real harm done, so we made our way back to the cars and loaded up for the 10 minute trip home.
You should have heard the boys yapping and carrying on, it was obvious they had a great time and just quietly so did Moose and I.You can tell that they had a great time from the look on Connor’s face, I reckon they had a good work out as well, as all four boys had crashed out before 8.30 that night. Actually Connor fell asleep on the 10 minute ride back to Moose’s house.
If these boys and kids like them, are the future of our sport, then it is in good hands.
Well done, Young Bulls!!!!! I am looking forward to our next ride together.July 21, 2008 at 8:27 am #105599good story Mick, good fotos too mate

July 21, 2008 at 1:33 pm #105651Seriously, the more I think I about it the more I think how good it would be to see something like this in one of the bike mags, after all they are the future of the sport.. Maybe you should send it in and see what happens, Maybe even get a plug in for the site too..
