The Dunlop Geomax MX51 is my favourite all rounder on the rear i get great milage at of them , M12 on the front.
I to like the S12 on the rear great traction up here on the far north coast loam but bloody hell the don’t last real long
Rob400May 31, 2013 at 10:56 am #242770S12’s have heaps of grip but can be destroyed in a few days riding if you hook in.
I am yet to go on a ride where the terrain is the exact same for the whole ride, the Australian bush varies so much, one minute your are in rainforest loam, nek minut as you climb a hill it becomes shaley rock.
I guess thats why so many people use and recommend intermediate tyres.
Michelin, Bridgestone, Pirelli you can’t really go wrong.
I like the Pirelli MX mid soft because I can get them cheap on line and don’t mind if they don’t last too long.
May 31, 2013 at 11:17 am #242749all good info fella’s if it where a poll it would be pretty clear by now.
Maybe i can make it Marty except the kids weekend sports are pretty much all weekend now . let me know.
Not to stressed on wearing stuff out LC and Rob cause i’m only renting my tires anyway ,got one of those pirrelli mid tires on the front and it goes ok from a non pro point of view.
cheers
May 31, 2013 at 1:06 pm #242775I have been using Kenda Washougals for the last 12 months and like them. They grip well and are predictable and I get them at a good price. I just put a Maxxis on the rear for something different.

If you ever want to try Kendas or Maxxis, give me a shout. I know a tyre guy.

Mal I used Maxxis before and during the four day in 06 and reckoned they were alright eh. Don’t see them around much down here but thought they would be good for Lochie’s new bike as he liked them on his 85. Can they be sourced where I got my car tyres?

I just put a Maxxis on the rear for something different.I like the Washougals too and run front and rear. I have also just put a Maxxis on the rear and its not bad.’ The MX51’s are a good tyre if you like stiff sidewalls and most of the Michelin range are good too. I prefer the MH3 upfront though.
Pirelli are also good value. I usually change what I buy with what’s on sale or on RMATV.
June 1, 2013 at 7:54 am #242752I’m interested to see several replies saying the S12 don’t hold up to heavy throttle abuse
I have just worn out my 2nd S12xc on the XR650R 140/80 (I think)
The 1st I got 1200k’s turning it a couple of times it was wearing well but I staked the side wall in a nasty bog hogThe 2nd I got 1600k’s out of also turning a few times last 200k’s was open tar and gravel roads chasing a mate on a 690 so I gave it plenty it was worn out but not torn/chunked I was surprised as how I had ridden it
I use to run m404’s lucky to get 500k’s outta rearstill running the m403 front in the 90/100 size luv’em

Cheers Mal,
Ill give you a yell if going that way.Thanks.Its been raining plenty down here today good timing to think tires.
Ditwitch thats some serious distance out those s12’s mate, can’t say ive ever turned a tire (bit lazy) sometimes ive got the spare new one on the shelf so just chuck it on. But the only tire ive ever had that sorta miles out of was a Stone King, which i think never wore out, someone probably found it at the tip and is still using it.
cheers
