My young fella has been riding a KTM65sx for the last 14 months, the little bugger…he’s 10 has had a growth spurt that has pushed taller than the wife and looking more like a 14 year old.

So over the next 6 months Im going to try and upgrade his bike and have been looking at the yz85 small wheel.

Any experience to share or problems I should look out for on inspection???

Are you dead set keen on the YZ85? Of all the 80’s I have dealt with, the YZ is the one I would only recommend to very experienced riders. They seem to lack the bottom end of the bikes with power valves ie KX or KTM. From what I have witnessed they seem to lag a little at the lower revs then come on the band like a ton of bricks and go like a scalded cat up top. They just seem to be more of a handful than the other brands in my opinion. I have had a great run out of our KX85.

    Hi Burkey,

No advice on the 80 but I will be in the market for a KTM65 in good nick for the same reasons (growth, up from ttr50). Let me know when / if you have it on the market. (after 06-10).

    Cheers Brad.

My young fella Rory has a big wheel yz85 and he is 13. I can’t say how other 85s go but like Mick says it goes pretty quick. When I first gave it to him I had a go and thought shit it’s fast. He doesnt ride flat out mostly  and doesnt do MX just out in the bush with his big bro and I. He has had some pretty big stacks though. The last one I was in front and give it a bit and looked back to see him do the same. He just opened it up to keep up with dad and got it all sideways and than highsided it over the front with the bike endoing around him. He goes alright. up he got and wiped the tears and dust off pick up his bike, kick it over, dumped the clutch and took off again.

Anyway the YZ goes pretty good out in the bush. It never fouls the plug and has taken some hits. I wasnt looking for a yz in particular. It was for sale when I was looking to buy so I got.

    Good one Dusty.
My kid, Tim went from a KX60 to a big wheel YZ85 and he loved it.
It was a great bike for him and yes it did worry me a bit after riding it myself.
Never had an issue with it. He then stepped up to a YZ125 then onto KTM200’s
Its amazing how quick they grow up.
Sorry for the hijack, just confirming that the little YZ was a great bike and he was absolutaley stocked when he got it as will you youngen. :woohoo:
    Cheers

    Thanks for the reply’s.

Mick, your comment on the KX is a direction I’d go in if I could find a half decent bike…most of the Kawasaki’s Ive looked at have been rooted and a new one isnt an option yet.

Brad, TYB’s bike is an ’03 model…its still a great bike and goes very well but not in the year range your after. Shame really because its been a fantastic bike.

Wish I had of been able to start him on a bike earlier but now Im trying to get him on the best bike I can buy/afford.

Might have to sell something :S
