I was checking the clearances as I have noticed a decrease in compression when i put weight on the kick starter. And it had a backfire pop want for a better word noticable at half throttle no load. A mechanic said it sounded like a leaking valve. I have bought some feeler gauges and checked the clearances. Alas the sods only go down to .206 mm but i could not put it under any of the cams.(exhaust range(.2 to .25mm) So the exhaust clearance is at least right or tight? I will have to get different guages to check the intake side to between .1 to .15mm. If the valve clearances are good i was going to remove the head and pour solvent on top of the valve to check for leaks.(as the good book tells me.)If it is just a clearance check then that’s easy and ‘tooextrememx’ is on the money with his video. If the valve shims need replacing then the cams have to come out and new shims purchased. Before you start take some close up photos of where the dots on the cam gears are and also mark (with a white marker or liquid paper) a cam tooth to the chain link with the motor at TDC. This way you’ll know where everything should be.I will return the cams to the ridable setting Thanks to you i now know the cams have been retarded so i will put them back so the punch marks on the cam gears a parallel with the top or the head.
I know on the old WR400 and 426, to get the YZ timing the exhaust cam was retarted by one tooth. I’m not sure if the 450 is the same. I was told that you lose what little bottom end torque the 400 had but gain a quicker reving engine. I decided against the YZ timing for that reason. But i did do some creative timing as the cam gears had moved on the shaft.
If your cams are still in then check the valve clearance and then change the timing. You’ll only have to pull the cams out once. Good luck with it. Take your time and follow the manual and you’ll be sweet.
I had the timing advanced on the wr to yz spec. That was what i was told anyway. From an uneducated perspective i would say that the timing is retarded as when you turn the crank counterclockwise to TDC the cams have not quite come(about one tooth off) around to line the marks up with the head. Should i check the clearances when the piston is a TDC or when the cam points are lined up with the top of the head? They are not the same as they would be if it was standard. I am giong to return the timing to stock so i think my next move will be to change it to standard then check it and adjust the clearance from there. Also the mark yamaha have in the book for TDC looks nothing like the one on the bike. Aparently KTM have a bolt to lock in in TDC. The orange side of the force is looking better all the time.
I dont care who they put in there but if you look around on your next ride, count the girls. I think the chance of having a prime minister who is female and is partial to the odd ride on a dirt bike is probably asking for too much! Maybe we should ask Katgirl to run for PM.
Jeffro you seem to have a happy nack of picking up second hand bikes that look like new, the new yellow beast for eg. Will have to send you scouting the next time im looking for a new stead. That thing looks mint!
Didnt get much interest on this one but it was a lot of fun. Once again the landcruiser trundled off with only one bike in the back. In the future you really should come. I get free fuel through work so travel will cost you zipp. So all you got to do is get to my place not mentioning any names Boony! Was PMing some friends and i relised i didn’t do a ride report so the letter became this post. Sorry no pics but i have learned from this experience and will get all set up for it next time.It was bloody mad. I swept so it was a free ride but you had to help all and sundrie. But that had its own fun. Got to sleep at 330 suprisingly very sober for that time of the night(sort of like wauchoppe sitting round the fire telling yarns). Although this fire had some very large trees on it and you could not stand closer than 5 meters. Nearly got bitten by brown snake that came out of a log we put on the fire. It was about 1 meter off going into a very drunk guys swag who we had to keep draging back from the fire to keep him in a spew free environment. Helped girl clean spew out of her helmet(not alcohol inducedshe had been sick for a few days … no really!.) Found some young guys (read dickheads) with the exhaust just about to fall off his P.O.S. We went to get some wire off a farmer parked just off the track. All was good till one of the idiots decided to cut acrooss the guys paddock. So the farmer took off like a madman to try to stop him only problem was my MX bike was using his tray as a stand. So i did not fall off once the whole weekend but my bars are not quite the same. After that i decided to leave the idiots to themselves. I rode an xr200 without front brake for hot chick up some of the hard sections. Worst thing was she would not let me double her up after i got her bike up there. Met a bloke who was very tired on his CR250r 2T so i decided he should ride my bike as it might be a little easier on him. My impression the madest thing i have ever ridden in the tight stuff it was like TNT with a .5 second fuse just waiting to unleash all the power you didn’t need with the slightest breath on the clutch.I just cannot imagine what a 500 would have been like. When i got back on my YZ 450 it fealt like an agbike! I met two school friends that i knew 20 yrs ago in the line to get a feed. yeah it was alright
It all sounded like dirtbike heaven until i read those words”well kind of… in vicco, you cant ride single track legally at all (and its policed the most!), even with full rego, as technically you must only be on a “gazetted road” ” It must be hell!!!! That is the ony thing that gets me through the week!
Sounds like it may not be doom and gloom after all thanks for that we all might live to ride another day after all!
People with electric start bikes suck yes you heard it right you are all a mob of *&$! until i get one and then you will just bearable! Bring on the stories of failed electric legs!!
Would be nice if just having everone regod would keep us riding in state forests but i think the clock is ticking and soon everybody will be out. TB mentioned the issue that people could sue state forests etal. I think this is the biggest problem bar none. I have a friend who had the best MX SX and everything track on his farm lots of people went there which was great free riding. But the problem came when another paraplegic was created. Now he is suing him and now everybody is out.Legal action stuffs everthing!!! It is even a problem for the farm owner because he now has to ride by himself. Sounds even more dangerous.Sorry guys i think you will look back in 20 years and say i wish it was back how it was in 2010. I think the money we spend should be funneled into maintaining where we ride. If we have to spend more to keep good places open we will just have to cough up. Problem is most of the money would go in admin. Enjoy yor ride while it lasts!

Quote:you can still count me in Boony , but i havent got a bike as yet sold the husky and still looking iv gone from crf 450X s to ktm 530s to crf 250s ( and im still keen on one of these at the moment ) to husky 310s, got no idea what i will show up on!!!Better go for the latter or your user name is going to sound all wrong! Although KTM530bloke does have a nice ring to it.
Great another clash of dates Inverell pony x is on that sunday I will have to say yes to the saturday but not sunday. I dont know how many more brownie points i can use up. I seem to be spending them so easily of late. Oh well at least i have a while to claw back a couple till then.
Very sad to admit it but in the Video STM Tiny and NickJ Carnage and WR carnage I am wr carnage sorry to all those held up by me on that occasion. Man that was fun when can we go back? No seriously!
Hey that would be really handy for Boony he is always looking for a headlight assembly. He didn’t brake one in the last ride so he should be looking for one after his next one! The last one he stole of an Audi RS6 and he would be much better off with one designed for a bike.
Bigger AL you certainly handled that KLX well on the ride that i saw. I think it all depends how much time you want to spend on maintainence. The current crop of KLX WR CRFX EXC etc certainly handle the type of riding like on the week end well but at a cost. I think i spend just as much time maintainng the thing as i do riding it. The DRZ certainly has filled the gapng hole that the XR 400 left(?WR450R where is it?). Although it still requires regular maintainence its really the only thing that you could live with on a daily ride that wouldnt keep you in the shed for every other hour. I sugest that you don’t only ride tat thing of Cory’s but do all the work on it too until his leg is fixed(and maybe a little longer). Dont know what Cory will think of that? If you ride the DRZ back to back with the KLX it is obvious which one you would like better but it is the other side of ownership that could change things.Try taking the KLX and the DRZ on the Camerons Corner ride and see who comes out on top?
