The good fellas at KTM Newcastle were kind enough to lend me a spark plug tool since they didn’t have one they could sell to me so I went at it tonight. If you guys got to see my current work shed you’d laugh your arses off but its what I’ve got at the moment so I have to laugh. Its wide enough to get the bike in and just close the door but you couldn’t switch sides then and theres enough room to squat down on either side of the bike but that’s really tight.
Anyway so I pulled the plug and had already pulled the carby drain out then I drained the oil. I gave the starter button a hit and my arm was reached across the bike to get to the button so when the spray of water came out the spark plug hole it gave me a fair surprise
I kicked it a couple of times letting the water spray out then topped the oil back up and kicked it a few more but could here some swishing so I decided to pull the exhaust off. I’ve taken the exhaust off before so there wasn’t too much trouble there and when I got it off the header had about a cup of water in it still. With that off I gave the button a press for a while and used some tissue paper to absorb any water misting out still.
I figured it was time to give it a go since I wanted to take the spark plug tool back tomorrow so I put the plug back in and put the exhaust and rear shock back on and attached the fuel. It took a few kicks but it turned over then konked when I turned the choke off. I was still paranoid so I pulled the plug back out and took a look at it then sprayed some wd40 on it and into the hole. Since the air filter was off I decided to leave the choke on and after a lot more kicks I got it going and it sounded good so I shut it down. I took a look at the oil sight window and it was milky so I packed everything up then dropped the oil again and now I’ve left it to drain over night.
I took a look at the oil from the first dump and it had a bit of shit in it and when I first got the bolt off it pissed out water. I’ll try and find some cheaper oil tomorrow so I can do a few changes without it costing me a fortune throwing away the good motul stuff.
Has anyone heard of “cleaning oil”?
I’d considered that too. I might look at the solid disks since I plan on riding the watagans a mostly and its always grainy out there.
Cheers for the tip.
As I said my rear brake was nice and tight after bleeding it. I was worried it was too tight but thought it’d be ok but one way or another I burnt through my newish pads. Other possibility is that I was riding them a little because they were sitting high. Either way by half way through the day I had no rear brake which made for some interesting descents in the wet stuff!
Good ride on the weekend but sheez how about the carnage! All good lessons though and although reactive, I’m learning

I backed it out cleaned the thread and then gently tightened it again without drama but I did notice a few goosebumps and had to wipe the sweaty palms! It turns out that I did strip the thread. After the ride on the weekend I noticed that there was a little oil leaking and thought I hadn’t tightened it enough but it wasn’t the case. I was very cautious so I think maybe it was damaged previously. Either way I think I’m going to have to get myself a torque wrench because I’ll be too paranoid now.
If anyone would like to recommend one it’d be appreciated otherwise I’ll just take a look around.
FWIW mine is playing up already
I’ll have to give them an email but on the weekend it only filmed 2-5s at a time and now the photo button doesn’t seem to work.
Happy birthday mate, hope you enjoyed the wet weekend!
I bought a 16mm extended socket today and its not thin enough so I’ll have to pick one up from ktm tomorrow.

Ok not off to a good start – I just googled to find out what size spark plug socket I’d need and it seems that you need to have KTM hard parts thin walled socket to get to it
Oh and Ollie, you got a mention today! I’ve been giving my best through those whoops sections the last few rides after you belted past me and I nailed them pretty good last ride so this time when I saw an opening I belted past 383 and Mototrans like you did to me that day and it felt gooooood!
Sorry to break your hearts but it was great out. It wasn’t raining here in east maitland when I packed and left but it rained a little on the way down. When we got there it was a tad damp and there were some decent puddles but it barely drizzled the whole day.
Us grade 3ers are hardcore cos we need the practice!
Sheez I reckon Mr Blue must’ve stolen all the good luck this week because a black tank for a 250excf sold just last week for $185
Congrats mate you must’ve had some good karma coming your way!

Ride was great. Mototrans did a great job of leading us around most of the day and to only real incident to speak of was my brother taking his bike for a swim  He flipped it up and drained it but when he took the air filter off it had about a cup of muddy water in there and we couldn’t get the spark plug out so he called it a day and we rode on. The puddles were there but nothing to get upset about. I’ll write up a proper report soon but I’ll be pulling his top end off tomorrow afternoon so it might not be till tomorrow night.
It was great to meet 383 and mototrans, cheers for a great day guys!
