Registration is definitely a must. It raises another point too, registration cost of the bigger bikes.
The DRZ4 is a very friendly bike and because your right into road bikes it will probably seem light to you?
Also coming from the road you would probably enjoy riding the DRZ where you wouldn’t normally take the roadie, dirt roads, fire trails etc. Bring a backpack and do some weekends away through the mountains. It’s all good fun and the DRZ should be able to handle a mix of road as well as dirt. My example here in my opinion is not suited to 2 strokes as they generally hate riding road sections. It really depends on what you will find “fun”. Old school 4 strokes like open spaces, 2 strokes like to live amongst the tight trees, newer 4 strokes like somewhere in between. You won’t look back!Yes sorry mate, it was one hell of a bullseye!

BCHmmmm, we shall see Mr C. I’m up to day 4 on the D952r and will reserve my opinion until I wear the sucker down. So far so good though. It wasn’t cheap, I’ll tell you that. I’m hoping I “get what I paid for”
Compromise, compromise, compromise.Welcome mate. Now I’m sucked into this conversation I may as well flick a 2c coin in too.
Here is my attempt at a blanket (and debatable) recommendation:
Learner/Inexperienced/Average weight:
– Mild 2 stroke (E.g DT200/KDX200)
– Anything light but not aggressive or large capacity
– Old school small 4 stroke (XR250/TTR250/DR250)
– Mild small 4 strokes (WR250R/KLX250)
– “Trail” not “Enduro” bikesAverage skills/Trailblazer/Heavier than average:
– Mild or old school 4 strokes (DRZ400/XR400/LC4)
– Newer “Enduro” 4 strokes (250/450)Experienced/Likes to do it tough/Fit/Single track demon:
– Any of the above
– Anything light and powerful
– Anything 2 stroke
– Large 4 strokesI really think that too many “less seasoned” riders jump on bikes that are too heavy and/or too powerful nowdays. They really do themselves a disservice because despite being dangerous to themselves and others it can really spoil the fun and set the boundaries too high or the learning curve too steep. There’s also the high chance that they learn the wrong style of riding too that will hold them back from improving – hard to explain. I liken it to L plate teenagers learning to drive in monster trucks. Yeah it looks good in the garage but they’ll never really get good at driving it or any other normal car and sooner than later someones gonna get hurt
Good luck and welcome to the world of dirtbikes “braaaap!”

Quote:Good report,
howd you’s go with drinking that water? You mean the water from the creek? I was fine. I actually drank it the next day as well without ill effects. The bloke (RipnShred) with the leech on his forehead was a crack up. I still have to go down to the Chemist and get some worm/parasite tablets… The 2 days I was there I scored leeches, a tick on my head and a scorpion in our tent. Who knows what’s in my guts right now….
Ran them front and back in the 4day. They are OK. They don’t excel in any particular area. Grant here runs them religiously. I moved on from them quite easily.

Quote:The Washogal isn’t. Are you referring to the Carlsabad?I’d say so. Rocket used to run Carlsbads until they got more expensive. They are a b_tch to get on and off (did it last Thursday again myself on my 300).
I thought the D952 was hard but the Carlsbad is nasty. Tell you what, if you want the daddy of knuckle skinning nightmare try getting a “Kings” tyre on and off a rear rim (Chinese ass of a thing). They are the worst and I throw that down as a challenge to anyone. I still have it here half worn. The funny thing is it’s wear is hardly anything special considering what a &^%*&^ *&^&^% it is to get on and off.Top ride everyone. Pretty much our first OBT ride not counting the short ride with TB’s group at Orange.
Grant and I arrived back at Dubbo last night from our 4 day ride trip.
Nice photos too. Thanks to all involved in organising the ride. Top bunch of blokes. Really made us westerner’s feel welcome.
Great loops all day and led very professionally by Murph, well done mate. Will be looking forward to some more of these rides in the future.
When I get around to it I’ll start up a thread with some of my experiences from the 4 day getaway including this ride with some photos.
Cheers, AxelReminder for those who have missed this thread and have Monday off – we have 4 attending this ride so if anyone else wants to join let Mal5.1 know (I’ll be on the road and away from these stupid computers).
Have a good one.holeshot wrote:

If it makes it easier for you to get the olgirl up that knarnly hill I will gladly
get off her. :laugh:Ha ha good idea HS. Nah the DRZ isn’t too bad, it’s those 650s that are the problem  😆
Hey Redders this is my first ride with these blokes so can’t help sorry. Maybe someone else will sort it out for you.
I’ll get more quality riding in the next 3 days than the whole 3.25 A4DE. If your tight with money stay away from the 4day.
Welcome Mr Cee.
Nice bikes those GasGas’. I have another affectionate name for them but I’ll refrain as your new.
Good forum this. Would be good to see you on some rides. In fact there are some organised for this weekend!
Have been a customer of yours a couple years ago. Fantastic quality graphics, they lasted the whole time I had the bike, through the 4day, you name it. Would recommend them to anyone.
I’ve been waiting for someone to knock off, I mean borrow the graphics theme off the ’10 KTMs to stick on my ’08 model.
Cheers, AxelVery wise words Bruce.
– Doughy bottom end? This will improve with more hours on the clock.
– I long for 6th gear too. 5th is no overdrive. With Red spring and the screw flush the powervalve starts opening at 80km/h. Hardly a leisurely cruise.
– Again the torque will make more of appearance when the bike loosens up. It’s the throttle response that takes getting used to!Hi Moto, here is a couple of photos from what we talked about yesterday:
Always put them in jiffy/glad bags just in case they leak.Hope you guys don’t ride big heavy bikes up those hills
I remember not so long ago trying to ride one of those KTM 990 whatever the are up a hill at Lithgow, faaaaaar out man.
If it weighs more than 110kg your riding it up yourself harhar cough cough -
