Quote:Just dont wind it right off and dont leave tension on it
Haha yes  when I say slight, yes I mean slight of course. For sake of completeness, you can feel the tension completely go, it’s either nothing or something. I rest it against the “something”, but not wind into the “something”. That will confuse you
.
When it comes down to it, even if there is some loss of tension over time, by my logic there will be less chance of over tightening, so the calibration will be “out” on the safe side. Instead of 10Nm it will really be 8-9Nm. In my mind – no big deal. At least all 4 (for eg) will be consistent.
There’s obviously many people here with much experience using them day in day out. When it comes down to it (or down to $) it’s better to have a reasonable TWrench then no TW.
I have Kingchrome TWs and admit they may not be 100% accurate but at least they are consistent. I have not stripped anything yet. If money isn’t an issue I would direct you to the TB’s last post as those “pin type” TW like the Warren & Brown are the “Rolls Royce” of TWs. No question, the pin type are fooking brilliant.Last thing, if you go for a cheaper type like the Kingchrome, don’t unwind them all the way out, leave some slight tension on them as I have heard (and seen) them dismantle themselves to a point of no return (then the’re RS).
Looks like the TMs are using more back plastic.. oh wait…that’s not a TM?!
I like GasGas but if those shots were any darker with those black plastics we could be being conned by those Chinese bike makers.
That’s him!
Terrible way to remember someone by… that will stick forever mate. Thanks for that Murf. Let me tell you that it looks like the ‘Bumble Bee’ kill wire struck old mate’s 300 too! I’ve followed 2stroke forums for a long time and have rarely seen it an issue which is weird. Like 300jack we thought it was all sorts of things other than this little wire. There are 2 connections for it (for other Kato readers and riding buddies), one around the speedo and one under the tank. Black/Yellow wire and connector. It’s such a PITA because we disconnected what we thought was everything but missed that little b’stard. The cause we think is moisture causing even the slightest resistance in the 2 kill switches (typically the one near the horn as the other one is more obvious when the e-start don’t work).
Coincidentally, we blamed his recent conversion to a ‘wet-stator’ for the e-start. We thought the stator packed it in. Not true, it was fine. Don’t you hate when that happens!!! :S
And finally, cover your switches when you wash yer bike!! I use masking/race tape. It only takes 20 seconds!!!
Well said Admin. It’s critical that tech questions are taken seriously even if the questions may seem stupid. Otherwise, the said person will never ask again…. one of my pet hates from “other” sites…
WRT the ball bearing, that bike is a Kato and I’m assuming 2stroke? (just saw the sig – 250excf!) Either way, motor stayed intact… 4mm BB is quite big and for it to escape from it’s race that bearing must be really shagged – if it came from your bike – which in my opinion it did not. Sounds to me like a BB from a bicycle bearing as they love rolling about the place here (cheap sht).
So no, I can’t think of any BB that big on Katos apart from the wheel bearings which shouldn’t “fall out”.
Hope that helps ease the anxiety.Didn’t realise I could upload direct. Linking to a photo website is not easy from here. Very tedious. The originals are good quality. Your the only one that has complained
I tried to keep the text as simple as possible, no-one wants to read a novel. It seems the wiring problem may have been just water/moisture in the handlebar kill switch.“There goes the neighborhood” :cheer:
Welcome aboard ekipS. As I have found there are plenty of familiar names here and a much more relaxed environment than what we are used to. Hopefully the riff raff will stay away from this nice forum as long as possible. I’ve only been here a week or so and it’s been good. Keep that 250 charged, we’re coming back up your way soon.
Same here, would like to see what your opinion is after a couple rides Bruce. For $30 I’ll get 2 for the price of 1 set of brand name junk nowdays. Thanks for sharing.
Bugger! I bet he was frozen for the rest of the way home. Saw an ’09 exc de-drowning in the huge puddles that Aaron found at high speed that time …. those airboxes unmodified let water in like nothing else. Yes, the dreaded black/yellow wires on the Katos! Real hard to trace faults without a wiring diagram in the bush! What can you do.
Just as I thought then. Thanks Bruce!
I have been seeing these shorties on ebay but have refrained due to the fact I have only ridden my 300 twice…
I think they have ‘enough’ bottom end as it is in my early evaluations. The standard pipe/silencer power curve is very usable, the SXS pipe I put on for yesterdays ride has ‘agro’ed’ the spread a bit and am skeptical whether it’s ‘better’. Snappy yes, more tiring yes. Will borrow an FMF shorty and do some pipe swapping and some combinations to see what I like best. I’m a very objective person and am the first to say some mods I’ve done were worse than before, even if they cost me big money. Here are the pics, didn’t realise that I could upload pics directly. They are from Picasaweb.

Was discussing short silencers on the way home from a ride yesterday. I always thought shorty’s improve bottom end. My astute colleague with more knowledgeable years claims it takes from the bottom and gives to the top end. Anyone with practical experience confirm what the effect is on “current” model 2smokes?
