A quick ride report for my Finke.
Day 1
I started on the outside of a grid of 8, old mate two on the inside got all out of shape off the line and took himself and the guy next to me out they hit the back of my bike but I was able to keep it upright.
I had a pretty average run down to Finke, all the guys around me were the same pace so I was chewing dust the whole way. Hit the bulldust around the 80km mark and threw the bike away, I went over the hangers, the bulldust was that deep there was only a handlebar sticking out of it. I got going again but all the guys around me had come off too. I had another off in the bulldust before I was out of it. The way the sun was I was struggling to see the definition of the track the whoops appeared flat!!!!
I had used 6 tearoffs by the 150km mark and had to save my last one.
Had a reasonable run over the last 15km which is pretty sandy roads there was 6 of us all sitting on about 110km to the finish, the last right hander before the finish I had a front end loose and skidded down the road taking skin of my arm and bruising my butt. Got back up and finished day 1.Day 2
I once again lined up on the outside of 8, I got a good start and was third as we jumped down of the tabletop I had a KX and a CRF in front of me.
The KX must have only been a 250 as once we got to the sandy road section I opened up the WR and blew past him, the CRF was a 450R I had the WR tapped 155 on the speedo and the CRF was pulling away. I passed a heap of people on this section and then straight into to whoops, I was still passing people in the whoops when I caught Stuart I yelled out to him as I went past. I was having a great run catching people passing them and getting clean air until I caught the next person.
We then got to the bulldust I wasn’t riding through that again so I went bush I think I rode half way to Mt Isa jumped a couple of erosion drains and only had to ride a very small section. Stuart had got back in front of me during that section. We came into the final fuel stop side by side, I got serviced quicker then him and I was gone. It was now all fast riding and my bike was deflecting and slapping real bad in the front end, I cranked the damper to max but it made no difference. Stuart blasted past me and roosted the hell out of me I went through 3 tearoffs whilst he was in front. We then hit the sandy hills and I caught him again we went side by side for a couple of km’s, the track then opened up Stuart looked at me and signalled lets go, I just looked backed as if to say I have nothing….. He took off and that was the last I saw of him I man handled the bike to the finish headshaking the whole way I was even slapping as I crossed the finish line and nearly ran into the tyre wall…..A later inspection we found the pin that goes into to actuator arm on the damper had dropped therefor I had no damper at all. Easy fix, Very happy to finish heaps tougher than two years ago bikes went well.
We got some good photos from the event, Stuart has got a great sequence of his off in prologue. We’ll post these up when we get home.
We are leaving Alice Springs tomorrow morning for the 3 day drive home.Trailboss wrote:

TB yeah I remember, I think Hilly did it like four times in a row that afternoon, for us to video, We might make it down there this afternoon but there will be none of that from us…. lol
Thanks for the kind words guys. After we head out today we’ll wash the bikes do oil changes and anything else that needs doing, then attach our race numbers and our new plastics ready for scrutineering tomorrow night.
sb_250y and I on top of Ayres Rock
We got into Alice Springs on Tuesday night after spending time at Ayres Rock and the Olgas.
Had a good trip with no issues
Went out on the track yesterday and clocked up around 80km.
Into the wind we are topping out around 149kph with a tail wind around 157kph and the bikes are just ticking over so we are pretty happy with that.
We had to make a few minor adjustments to our Steg Pegz and nip our spokes after the first run.
The track is alot rougher than how I remember it from two years ago, and I was getting pretty bad arm pump after about 5 minutes rode through it and all was good.
sb_250y and I were riding side by side doing about 80kph when we hit a real wooped out section, I saw out of the corner of my eye him pogo sticking it and then a big cloud of dust. He bit it pretty hard.
Today we will head out again and try to sort the suspension a bit.
TB is correct sb_250y and I got Tee n Cee to help design and then make up radiator shroud stickers and front guard stickers for our WR’s we are also getting one for the back window of the VW.
They turned out awesome!! we will post some photos up next week after they are all fitted to the bikes
Well we are leaving for Alice Springs in just over a week. SB_250Y and I were just in the shop discussing the fact
that we think we are pretty much sorted. Been busy with the bikes just little things like new handgrips and new throttle cable on my bike new plastics and nice billet clutch covers.
A mate is coming for the trip and his only request was he wanted to be able to have cold roadies on the trip! So SB_250Y set about modifying the mounting of the rear seat and I made the mount up for the fridge. It all turned out great
Tyres and tubes arrived today
Wheel bearings and new hubs were done on the trailer today.
Everything is going to plan.
I know some say different model wr450’s use different bearings, but from what I have seen its the seals/spacers that change bearings stay the same… Standard yamaha wheel bearings normally don’t come with seals so i usually use sealed bearings.
Alloy frame and steel frame use the same headset bearings too
04,05 07,08,09,10 WR 450/250 (haven’t had an 06 or 03 but would imagine they are the same)
Front 6904 LLU x 2
Rear 62/22 LLU X 1
60/22 LLU X 1Top Headset Bearing 320/28X
Bottom Headset Bearing CR0643L
I have seal sizes I will update, next time I’m in the shop
I bought a set once. Front was scary and I ditched it after one ride. Rear was ok but not good lasted ok but would never buy another set.

Quote:Is there some sort of solvent treatment that could clean it out without opening her up?? My single wall pipe may as well be made of paper its that soft but it does sound great. On old trials bikes that are renowned for coking up the exhausts, you could either take it to an engine rebuilder and put it in his acid bath. Or
Put some petrol in it and light it up, the roar is like a 747 taking off and there is heaps of smoke but it works.mal5.1 wrote:
Quote:Nice bling guys.Haven’t heard of TM designs before but they certainly look the part.
Got much more to do?
The TM stuff is quality gear. Without them guys were known to have to replace a chain slider for the return trip from Finke back to Alice.
I’m pretty much done. Having a head F### though atm trying to sort the TPS Throttle position sensor on my carby. So if anyone knows much about them I’d love to hear how succesful you have been at adjusting it and whether it made much of a difference mine is reading 2.5V and it should be .58 to .78!
We have pretty much sorted most things looking at running 14 , 50 gearing and a Bridgestone ED78 120/100 rear tyre should be good for an honest 155kph. Running Bridgestone M403 front 90/100
It’s time for me to add my bit to this thread. The bike has been apart most of the week with the main
job being to re-grease the rear suspension.
One Set of needle rollers apart
Assembled needle rollers greased ready to install
Whilst the swing arm was off it was the ideal time to install a new chain slider.
The TM designworks gear are the shizzle. We use plenty of Sikaflex under these chain sliders when we install them. They are a little noisier than a standard one.
TM designworks chain guide these can cop a huge wack a don’t deform like alloy ones.
TM designworks disk protector.
I decided to install a carb filter on the overflow lines. I battled with the carb in the bike and finally had
to remove it to install the hoses and filter.
Carby back in the bike
Santa dropped by and left SB_250Y and I some nice new Bling wheels for our bikes
“Front” Hahn billet hub heavy duty spokes and excel rim
“Rear” Hahn billet hub with a cush drive extra heavy duty spokes and a wide 2.50 rim NICE!!!!mal5.1 wrote:
Quote:Good luck guys. Hope you don’t have to use any of the spares. Thanks for droping in while I was getting the rock star treatment at the 4 day too.
Do you know what numbers you are in the Finke yet?
Hey Mal, was good to catch up, I’m really keen to give the 4 Day a go now after having a look. Don’t think I’ll be heading to Mackay for next years though.
My number is 530 for Finke and 430 for Hattah
sb_250y I think is 671 for Finke and 471 for HattahI had the first model that was released and the only air cooled model the 84 KX60. Was a ball tearer for a young 8 year old, flipped it off start lines many a time, the main competition used to come from the CR60’s as the YZ60’s were pretty outdated by this time. The fast guys used to graft KX80 suspension to them for a more user friendly ride or extend the swingarm. Also back in the day when there used to be a 50cc class but no new 50cc bikes being released Gary Treadwell from Kawasaki West (Big kawasaki dealer in the 80’s) used to either de stroke them or re sleeve them back to a 50cc. In the 50cc class they could not be touched as the RM50’s and YZ50’s had nothing on a resized KX50.
520, 525 and 530 are all the same pitch just the width of the chain varies.
Whilst on a trip on my TA I was forced to run a 520 front sprocket with a 530 chain for over 5000km’s to get home worked but not ideal.
I bought one for my 87 TA and it was the wrong spline. My TA had a very square spline with like 5mm flats the sprocket I got may fit your bike as its splines are alot closer like an XR650 it’s a supersprox and states its for a TA. If you want PM me your address and I’ll mail it to you and you can see if its right or not.
The other thing to be careful of it was a common modification to converte TA’s from 525 to 530 chain and sprockets.
