Got a suspicion that you might all be wrong. Might have YZ forks, might have 2009 YZ shock, might have lighter frame, might have the same engine, might have Fuel Injection. 14 days until the embargo is lifted and truth be known. Bet you will be asking how?

For all of the testing that has been done especially in the desert Maxima FFT is the only filter oil that will keep the dust out. 7 Years and more than 30,000 kms at finke on two xr650’s and every honda out there runs the oil. It is the stickiest around.

If you are limited in the tinkering department then the XR650 would be the bike to own. Yes I may be one sided but it is very much bullet proof. The engine is as strong as hell and you can use it as a trail bike also. It may be harder work than a lighter CRf450X but if it is set up well then you cant go wrong. The secret to the XR is to keep the air filter clean and only use genuine honda filters, use Maxima FFT air filter oil and change it after every ride regardless. Keep an eye on the valves and just keep it well serviced. My first 650 did some of the hard kms on teh finke track over 5 years and never missed a beat. You would need to change the top end more often on the CRF also. If you happen to chose the 650 then let me know, I would be happy to guide you in getting it set up.

If you want a CR500 then the service honda CR500AFX is the one to own. Jeffery Honda in Victoria are one if the importers. These things are a work of art.

you might want to replace the metal material in the air box with a fine stainless steel mess which will allow it to breath but also keep the mess out of the airbox. you might also want to use maxima air filter oil.

I understand your concern about frieght but there is no need. We use Toll and they offer a great service. All you need to do is pack the suspension well. get an old blanket or bubble wrap and wrap the first fork leg, then wrap the second against it and wrap. Wrap the shock separately and tape it all together. Once it is ready give us a call and we will arrange the rest. We do this all over the country and have never had an issue even from places like Tom Price in WA.

You need to treat the XR650 as well. I just may bring my XR650 and you can have a ride on it. Just might scare you.

The beauty of having your suspension upgaded to suit you is exactly that. If you weigh 135kg in your gear you simply install the correct spring rates to hold the bike up under the rider weight and then revalve the suspension to suit your riding ability and you have something that suits you perfectly. Teknik as a business can cater for a rider weight of 50kg all the way through to 180kg and everything in between. We have guys on XR650R’s at 180kg racing Finke and guys weighing 65kg on TE510’s riding the wheels off their mates. There is no real limitation to what can be done with the suspension, it is just up to you and deciding to have it done.
