My brothers XR600 has me scratching my head. It still has the stock carb and a reasonably new 630 kit. The thing will idle beautiful, but when you rev it it doesn’t return to idle, it will rev at quarter throttle and if you give it another rev it will either return to correct idle or it will go to about half throttle so you have to give it another rev in the hope that, it will go back to the correct idle then.
All good fun when you are going down some snotty hill with erosion mounds!!!
It has new throttle cables and I looked to see if the throttle is returning to the stopper on the carby (were you adjust the idle) and it is, so I am thinking that the slide must be sticking or something. You can hear the slide bottom out quite hard so I dunno WTF is going on.
At one stage yesterday the bike was on its stand idling while we shifted a tree blocking the track and all of a sudden the thing decides to start revving it’s head off for no reason like it was about to run out of fuel.
It is also prone to cough stalling in tight sections and when it does that it is a right slut to start and what is worse, it appears I am the only one that can get it to go,so every one stands around yappin while I have to kick my guts out.
I am thinking he should get a flat slide Mikuni for it but my brother’s missus ( she is only five foot tall but savage as hell) won’t let him spend that kind of money on a bike she didn’t want him to have in the first place.
A pat on the back and a firm hand shake to the person that can shed some light on what is going on with the cranky thing.

I’ve put a 1000km on the XR since installing the 38mm Mikuni. I am very happy with its performance. No more bog of jumps (like Chicken said) and the tendancy to “cough stall”in tighter sections is all but eliminated. It also holds it’s own, head to head, power wise with the bro on the KTM530 going up hills.
Only one concern has come to light and that is, it is pinging to buggery if it labours going up hill, especially if you just wind the throttle on without knocking it back a gear.It seems to be the most noticable between 1/2 and 3/4 throttle. I have only noticed this above about 300 meters. I live at sea level and have a 210 main jet in it and i haven’t noticed it pinging here.
From what I have read, I am presuming this is being caused by a lean condition.
The question is, should I be putting a bigger main in it like a 220 and or am I barking up the wrong tree and should I be dicking around with the mixture screw instead?

hay haw are ya . try lifting the needel clip down one grove .when the slide is betwen 1/2 to 3/4 most of the fule metering is done by the jet needel. if it is not pining at full throttel dont think it wood be the mane jet . all so thave you checked your ignion timing:)
