Had a look into that average speed rule for pony express once. Problem is I can’t remember what I found out but I have a feeling I wasn’t pleasantly surprised and there was an average speed thing of around 25 km/hr or something very low. I don’t think they worry to much about it though. In our series you would average low 30’s on most tracks and at best low 40’s if you’re real good at moree.

I’m sure there would be ways around it if you talked to MQLD. They seem much more relaxed and realistic than MNSW from my limited experience. I went to a 2 day state round enduro at Goomburra a couple of years ago and it was more relaxed than one of our pony expresses and that’s saying something.

Gibbit, make sure you post up any enduro type events you blokes are putting on as I for one have not heard of any. Do you have a website with a race calendar. If you are looking for pony express dates go to http://www.narrabridirtbikeclub.com

No worries. If you are ever keen and need a tour guide let us know. Do you compete in tuff truck?

I reckon they are a waste of time Boony. Not a big fan and I don’t reckon they would do much but empty your wallet. (I can’t go riding this weekend now as I have just jinxed myself).

PS. Forgot to say congratulations on getting the club up and going again. It’ll be a good thing and with three on the ground (well soon anyway) it looks like you might be involved for a while. Just make sure to spread the load with the jobs and all will be sweet.

If I can give you a hand with advice on paperwork/organisation etc then make sure you ask. I’m guessing MQLD would be much the same as MNSW in the way things work. Most things are fairly easy but if the committee is all new then there may be a couple of things you need a hand with.

    G’day gibbit,

We tried unsuccessfully to get Gundi to hold a round of the northern inland pony express series a few years back. They weren’t interested/motivated then which I can understand when you haven’t got a motivated committee. Not saying I’m asking again now as we have more than enough rounds in the series as it is but this will change some time in the future as all things do so if you are keen on expanding into enduro in the future then this may be a possibility down the track. Griff and Andrew (if you know them) have done a few rounds. You’ll have to come down to the bike territory ride on april 9/10 (see organise a ride section) and check out one of the tracks.

    TB,

Do you reckon it makes a difference on and off road or just on road. Have been thinking about it for a while but figured off road probably not worth it as you get a rim dent or loose a few knobs or change your tyre then it all has to be done again.

I could see how it makes a difference on road as even my 300 is very annoying on the tar. The front tyre is visibly out of balance (and probably the rear too but don’t seem to feel it as much).

Be interested in your findings for off road use though on the XR.

    G’day Holmesie,

Last time I was down your way I was in a balloon following a giant inflated kookaburra around. Wasn’t a bad way to spend a morning but wasn’t a big fan of the champers afterwoods. That was the best part of a decade ago now. Do they still have the balloon festival in April.

Bit of a side issue but there were people in Brisbane complaining about the noise of the army rescue/aid helicopters. If people are complaining about something that is actually helping their devastated neighbours it shows the fight we have on our hands over the noise of dirt bikes.

I’m hoping it was just a media beat up and there wasn’t actually too many people complaining.

I reckon the mx71 tyres might be the go. They’ve only got 19″ rears on sale though. The other thing is has anybody bought stuff from that website before. I’ve got this niggling doubt in my mind that I might have heard of some issues with it but would be glad to be corrected as it gives me another shopping option.

I had the exact same problem on my KTM, it turned out that all I needed was a new radiator cap, $15 and I haven’t had a problem since.

LC, my cap was similar. It was actually bubbling out the top not the overflow. I bent the tabs up a bit and it has made it better but not totally fixed. It is also short term as the tabs will obviously bend back in time.

Did you buy the same pressure cap or did you go from the 1.4 to 1.8 bar cap.

I agree noise is the big issue. It is monotonous and it even drives me crazy if I’m within hearing distance of a track for too long and I’m someone who appreciates bikes. Like others have said, imagine what those that don’t are thinking. At the end of the day there will still be people objecting on the basis of erosion but generally speaking most people never see this and wouldn’t care if they aren’t coming across it. People generally only complain about what effects them directly and that’s what noise does.

On the other issues listed, I’m not sure about supporting riding areas for unregistered bikes unless there is a sytem in place where these people are contributing financially to track upkeep costs like rego could be used for. I’m not saying it is use for that now but it could be and all users should be contributing financially as these things don’t happen for free.

The biggest issue I see with excluding registered bikes is that it excludes kids and I would like to see kids allowed under supervision.

In our pony express we find that for 100 bikes+ (so around 60 on the track at any one time) you need 20km minimum to keep it safe/enjoyable and even then it is hell if dusty. Most of our tracks are around 25km and they deteriorate considerably over the 4 hours. We don’t so much get ruts except when wet or in the sand but more braking/accelarating bumps, deep dust powder. It gets bloody hard on the body with bumps in 4 hours so a shorter track for longer means worse track conditions.

The soil down there may be better and hold up better. Heffo knows bikes, racing and the area so I would be surprised if it really went to the pack as it sounds like an event they are trying to get the average punter involved in.

Personally I prefer longer laps. More time to get your rhythm and a longer break between laps. You get a better rest and more chance of getting any repairs down before you really piss your partner off by making him do another lap.
