    Murph,

Good to here you’re coming good. I’ve been waiting for another murphsberg ride to be posted. No promises on making it as you are a long way from Narrabri but it sounds like we like the same sort of riding conditions and challenges. I am a little familiar with the area as I was born in Ballina, have/had grandparents in Ballina, Lismore and Byron Bay and we used to live at Numulgi. Unfortunately for me we left there before I was walking so haven’t had any riding over there yet. Anyway if you happen to have a ride planned with reasonable notice, and are desperate for a riding buddy I am willing to try and keep up.

If that is the toboggan run I am thinking of (shiny metal half pipe thing about 1m off the ground that you slide down on a skid with a lever between your legs that works the brakes) don’t make a pact with your mates not to use the brakes. Not using the brakes results in cart leaving track. Cart leaving track results in pain.

Posting videos is easy. Just put in the web address. Anyway we all had a great time on and off the bikes. Managed to get two full days riding in and one full nights drinking. Took a couple of days for the stomach to come good when we got home.

Bike played up just after lunch on day 1. Wouldn’t start. Thought I must have done my first plug. Changed it, still no go. Ended up taking drain plug out of carby and presto fired straight up. Ran a bit sick after that though. Didn’t like any load at all and doughy. Just what I needed on the hills. Looks like I’m about to learn how to clean a carby this week.

One of the single trail loops. Fireball Bash. We were riding in the wrong direction.

The run up to the caves. The first bloke on the green machine makes it look a lot harder than it really is but hey as long as you make it everything is sweet. Maybe it was the bike that made it hard.

Good fun. Don’t blame the tools as 9 times out of 10 if you pinch it during installation it won’t inflate at all. You were either unlucky or whatever caused the first flat was still in the tyre. Everybody needs practice putting in tubes anyway. Good for the soul.

The Hill we call Rowan’s hill (behind Rowan’s property) always intimidates me, I have never made it all the way up on my first go. It is the big hill that caused a lot of grief on my birthday ride this year.It has two very ugly rutted sections on it,one at the bottom and one right at the top. On my birthday ride it took us the best part of an hour to get all 30 bikes up it. Those who where there, will remember Crash’s heroic attempts at it on his 650 only to get a meter or so from the top of the first section only to run out of fuel.
When I arrived at the bottom on my birthday ride (I was sweeping at the time) The hill was littered with riders and bikes going no where. It was one of the highlights of my riding career to tractor the XR up the first part of the hill on my first attempt (Only to crash further up the hill). There were blokes looking for an option to detour around it untill I tractored the pig up, then they watched 68 year old Allan ride up it on his first attempt, then pride took over and they all had a go at it, with varying degees of success

    Mick,

Like all photos those musn’t do any justice to the hill because that looks like prime traction material with a reasonably straight and smooth line. Funny how things can be deceiving as this is obviously not a description of what is there in real life.

Pork Chop is a funny sort of hill. You hear all about it and the anticipation is there before you arrive. You see it for the first time a few km’s out and you really get scared as it looks even bigger than it’s reputation. You arrive at the bottom and think, bit rough but I reckon I got a chance, maybe it’s not as bad as it looked from the distance. You then have multiple goes and only get up the bottom third and you ride off into the sunset with hopefully only your pride dented. It costs more if your bike is dented though.

    Murph,

What happened with mine is air in the line. Bike gets hot, air expands more than fluid and has the same effect as pulling on the clutch lever. It happened to me on the practice lap of the pony express. In the end all we did to get through the race was crack the bleed nipple (with some pressure on the clutch lever) and let a bit of fluid out and it was perfect for the race. It got bled before my next ride though. The blokes helping me at the pits said it looked like my fluid had been boiled. They also said that there are only a couple of things that can go wrong. Most common is fluid and bleeding will fix and the second was some seal in the system somewhere. I don’t profess to be a mechanic and I can’t remember where it was as I remember thinking it sounded expensive/hard to fix so I mentally blocked it out of my brain.

You know things are serious when you have to rope yourself onto the quad.

When my clutch played up (air in fluid) it was the opposite. The clutch would not take up. It would be slipping all the time. I bled the system and all was fine. The new fluid was green the old stuff that came out was black. I guess I had got my monies worth out of it.
