So basically what you’re saying Mr Blue is what people complain about is the factors that annoy them and more frequently they get annoyed the louder they complain. In your circumstance the issue is compounded by the fact that a lot of the people causing the issues aren’t even from your area. You can put up with a few locals annoying you as they generally contribute to the community in other ways. Outsiders don’t so lower tolerance.

I understand noise is a major issue. I was out at a mates place helping out the other day and the kids next door had a mx track set up. Now don’t get me wrong I love bikes but by the end of the day I could quite easily understand how people find the noise annoying. It is loud, monotonous and constant.

I would never complain if I moved there after them but if it was the other way around I reckon it would get to me and we’d have to sort out some kind of arrangement. And that’s coming from a bloke that understands the enjoyment you can get riding so imagine what people who see motorbikes as a dangerous sport for people with a death wish think.

I just re-read the posts. What it comes down to is common courtesy and abiding by the laws. The number of people riding and the lack of available spots to do it legally is leading to some people not doing either. It is still not an excuse. Is there a tendancy for people who ride unregistered bikes on public land to be more annoying. They are certainly not going to hang around any longer than they have to and they will go anywhere if it means not getting caught. As such they are not doing the cause any good in a time when there are already a lot of other issues that need addressing.

I totally agree that we need to be united. We are already a minority and we all know how much say minorities have at the end of the day. What is required to get everyone on side is a solution and if we don’t prepare one, one will be forced on us. Not sure what it is yet but it may well involve us putting our hands in our pockets and forking out the hard earned for the rights to ride in certain areas.

Anyway I am rambling here and putting out words as they come to mind. Need to focus a bit and maybe come back to it.

I have 3 mates that have had deisel nissan dual cabs. Not sure if they were D22 or D40, I don’t know the specifics as not really a diesel fan. Anyway they would have been 2007 and 2008 models if that helps. All 4wds. 1 was hardly ever used as 4wd, dirt roads every day but not much serious off roading. It was the bees knees. Great car and no problems. The other two were farm managers cars. Hard life all on dirt, heavy clay soils so you can imagine what it was like in wet weather. No end of troubles with the drive train. Can’t remember if it was the gear box, transfer case or what but just know they were getting repaired a lot. Having said that, I’m pretty sure all 3 would still say the nissans were a good vehicle and at least as good as a hilux.

On a more serious note, I have now read your post properly. I used to use Castrol GPS in my old wr250F. Changed oil and filter every 500km. That was about the full lifespan of the oil though. It was black as by then so maybe should/could have changed earlier.

I reckon cheapish oil, very regular changes is the go as long as you are religous about doing it. Any long runs with crap oil and I reckon you’d pay.

I heard Dr Kahl talking about oil one day. He had some datsun (180B or 120Y) and ran crap oil but changed it every 3000km. It had some fairly high kilometres (several hundred thousand from memory)and was still original and he was convinced regular oil changing was the key. We all know Dr Kahl knows everything about everything.

    Aaron,

Get a two stroke mate. Motul 800 costs me $105 for 4 litres. Let me work this out. 11.5L tank. so at 45:1 that is 255ml of oil/tank. So 15.7 tanks of fuel/4 litres of oil. So $6.70 worth of oil in every tank of fuel. I wish I han’t worked that out now. I think you should stop whinging. Now I know why you went scrapbooking instead of racing at Upper Horton.

Then I still have the 700ml of gear box oil every 500km as well. Can’t remember the cost of Motul Transoil though. I think it’s in the order of $30-$40.

Looks good. Going to be a lot louder than the old one though. Imagine finally being able let loose after 19,000km. The bike will be reborn.

Thanks for the link twobanger. I knew about most of those options (not the thread cutting but). It is like there are two seperate issues. The starter itself and the bendix gear issues. I know all the bendix issues take load of the starter which in itself should help the starter. I have often wondered about the earthing issue. It doesn’t excite me that much earthing back through the motor and frame to the battery. I was actually thinking about running an extra earth wire from the startor to the battery. I have checked my bendix and although I don’t run it in an oil bath I have removed all the ktm grease and used good quality stuff instead.

Just had a thought whilst thinking about the earth issue. If you put loctite on those bolts does that mean they won’t be as good for earthing. I don’t know but just thought of it so thought I would put it out there for comment. I didn’t loctite them this time anyway but I probably would have in the past.

I thought about putting some silastic on the two joins in the outer cover but decided against it as I thought it would only make things harder next time. There is a rubber seal in each join sort of like a square o-ring. The biggest hassle is the starter motor is behind a plastic cover for protection and the cover is held on by four bolts (two of which are also used to hold the side case cover on) so it is hard/time consuming to get to regularly. I have been half tempted to take the cover off as I reckon all it does is trap dirt and moisture but knowing my luck a big rock would take out the starter.

Put it back on the bike and all fired up first go. Very relieved. I think part of the problem is the unit doesn’t seal very well and moisture gets in and causes the contacts to tarnish up. The two bolts holding the unit together seemed a bit loose so I have tightened them this time and will keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t vibrate loose and see if this helps. Not real keen on having to do this every 3-6 months.

IS the wire brush okay to use or is it too harsh for the soft metal contacts. Didn’t seem to mark anything so I was hoping it was okay.

Anyway the good news for any ktm owners out there who are sitting on a stuffed starter motor is that it can be fixed yourself for around $20 and a bit of your time. It’s not that hard and there’s only a few bits so it’s easy to remember which order they came out.

Thanks for the tips. I’m guessing by air leaks you mean holes in the air box boot or can these happen in the carby and/or the reed block as well.

I was going to take the drain plug out of the carby and check for water as well but haven’t had a chance yet.

Any idea what the brown stain on the back of the throttle slide might be. It was right up the top of the slide as you look in from the back where the air boot connects. I’m guessing this means the whole thing needs a good clean anyway.

Have been thinking about putting in an inline filter for a while now as I’m always filling from jerry cans. Any good brands.

What’s the difference between long track and speedway. Is it because you use normal dirt bikes or is long track the one with the chicane so that there is one bend in the track going the other way to the rest.

There was a bloke from the coast at Upper horton on the weekend. Had a 2011 and a 2010 model tm stolen from his shed during the week plus all of his riding gear. Rang the cops, they didn’t even bother coming out, just gave him a number to give to the insurance company. Said that the theives are stealing bikes until they have enough for a container full then shipping them overseas and selling them. I did wonder about how this was done, surely customs would be a bit sus over a container load of bikes and then when they are in the next country would they be compliant to sell.

You have got to feel sorry for him. He smashed that other blokes time through the technical stuff, he almost beat it after having a stack that’s how much in front he was.

You get fooled watching it though, thinking why did he push so hard in the easy section when he had it in the bag. Made it feel to me like a rookie mistake. Then I punched myself in the head and realised at the time you don’t know if you are in front and you have to push hard.
