I knew hillbilly and co came 8th. Was wondering who they were. Now I know. Should have dropped your bike off the ute whilst I had the chance! If you were parked near the pit entrance then that was me and Dave that helped. The legs didn’t really feel like climbing up there I can tell you. Todays the first day I can walk normal since the race and it still hurts but at least I don’t look like a gimp walking down the street.

I was starting to wonder if we smelt a bit because everyone else pissed off from around us pretty quick after the race.

I’m not in the video Galey. I don’t think they could catch me! (I wish). Blue, my partner, is in one of the still photos at the end. I think it’s around 13:15. Team 81.

There was a few drowned cars in the creek crossing. It was over the bike trailer floor. Blues swag was a little moist on arrival. It was nice of him to put his swag under mine.

Two more comments. Great event, I recommend doing it.

If you do pairs or are insane and do solo make sure you have a support person. It saved our bacon.

There was a bloke there on an old IT doing solo. Not sure of the age but I was told it was the first model with mono shock and maybe 1978. Also a solo dude on a PE 250 of similar vintage. When I was catching up to IT man I thought my bike was on fire it smelt that bad.

May as well put my 2 bobs in. Tried the pillow tops. Didn’t mind them but they seemed to wear out fast. I don’t run barkbusters though and I seem to hit the ground (or at least my bike does) on a regular basis. Now run the renthal kevlar grips. They’ve got a couple of layered compounds according to the blurb. Still soft and grippy (is that a word) but tough as well. Just as cheap as other grips too so alls good. They’re smaller diameter than the pillow tops too which is good. Large diameter grips just feel weird.

Looks like TB may have been on the money. Went to bleed the system on the weekend. Took the lid off the reservoir and the little valve thing wasn’t sitting in the right position. Thought this couldn’t be a good sign. Tried to reverse bleed and no go. Couldn’t push any fluid back through. I then proceeded to pull the piston etc out of the master cyclinder and when I was mucking around with the piston, first thing it did was pop out a bit more into what I assume is the proper release position. Pulled it all out anyway. Seals looked okay to the eye but the ridge that the spring pushes against had broken away in a couple of spots. So need to get a repair kit. Should I get one of those valve things in the reservoir too. What would have caused it to come out of position.

Must say it’s a fiddly bit of gear to work on. Any tricks to getting the new stuff back together when it arrives. I’m assuming it is put in new piston then the circlip then the rubber boot and push rod thing. Didn’t do my rubber boot any favours on the removal so not looking forward to putting new one back in.

Can’t find any youtube clips. Hopefully this means it is not as hard as I am envisaging.

If it has air in the system the clutch will not slip., you will have no pedal (won’t release), so to speak If your clutch slips it has run out of free travel. I would be looking further at the clutch springs, bolts, plates, pressure plate, slave cylinder rod etc.

    Cheers,

Thanks Lefty. I was wondering if I should be inspecting some of those things as well. Looks like I had better take a look.

Thanks TB. I thought I had it right but just wanted to check that there wasn’t anything I had to do with the clutch lever whilst shringing it back up. I suppose trial and error would have soon taught me you can reverse bleed with the clutch lever pulled in. All’s good.

There is a group of bikes and support cars going up from Narrabri to the gulf around that time too TB. I think it’s last week July and first 2 weeks August. Don’t think they are going to the tip, just the western side of the cape. They are riding from here and I don’t know their itinerary yet but if you happen to come across an unruly looking bunch they are guaranteed to have rum if you have run out. Last trip they carried the port in 10L jerry cans. Some of the support vehicle passengers are a bit partial to the festive beverages.

Excellent work on the deck building TB. Was looking at the above photo and was thinking the cam looked awful like someone went to it with a chisel. Then watched the video and realised it was lumps of grease.

So is the trip part of a rally or fundraiser?
