As the boys have already written and pictured, we had a terrific morning out near Rydal. Some sweet single, uphills & downhills linked with some fun twin and fire. The usual care had to be taken when flicking through the single in the pine forest for those bastard tree roots! Those slippery, sneaky little suckers are just waiting to spear you into a tree or slap you down for a face plant.
Speaking of planting ones’ face, I had a ripper when we were flying down a little nothing fire trail when I loaded up the side of my front tyre and it just felt like it rolled off the rim….and down I went….SMACK….it seemed a little early for the stars to be out! I had a little sit (looked more like a prayer), then shook my head like one of those cartoon characters that has just had a piano dropped on their head. Then we were off again. I think that’s the price you pay for running a moose that needs re-packing!
Mal did a great job leading us through some of his lush tracks, and we did this for a few hours before returning to base for a feed. We then went back at it for another few hours until the fuel was running low. We thought, what better way to top off a perfect mornings ride, than with a cool beer or rumski at the small, quiet local country town pub. Mal and I walk into the bar and are just about to order, when the bartender says “hang on fellas, I’ve just got to take care of something…righto girls in you come” In shuffle about 16 lovely young ladies, all in fancy dress, on a hens day local establishment tour! We couldn’t believe our eyes! Mal commented that “he’d never seen that many barmaids working the taps here before!” They were just getting a photo behind the bar and there were laughs all ‘round. What a top crew. THEN, in walks the big Polka Dotted unit. You could see the thoughts ticking over in the girls minds “I didn’t order this? Who did? What’s he going to do? Anyhow, TB agreed to a few photos or ten and they drove off in their chauffeur driven minibus to continue their memorable day……if they’d remember any of it by morning…..it was only about 12.30pm I think!
We ordered a drink, and had a chat whilst having a little rest. Then we rode back to base to pack up. We headed for Tarana pub for lunch and a de-brief.
Said our goodbyes to Mal, dropped TB home and headed for home myself. Unloaded, washed bike, dumped gear outside laundry (fathers day tomorrow, so I should get away with that) and inside just before 6pm……….TOP DAY OUT!

Thank again Mal for sharing some of your local knowledge.
    Thanks TB for…………ummm……uummm………being TB.

Nothing better to do than dig at a ride just because you don’t want to/can’t do it?

Maybe the guys that like technical rides should be more outspoken about your rides (typically the type of ride they prefer not to do)?

I have a question about the Caves ride:

Wouldn’t I have been better off doing it in my Subaru?

Murph’s rides are like your rides, the people know what they are going to get when they go on them, if you don’t like them, don’t go. Like Murph said, the hills are do-able, and that’s where the challenge lies for the people that like to go on these rides.

    Moto,
I’m sensing a whole heap of anger in your post that didn’t seem to be there before you went away for work. I think it’s the dirt bike riders version of “Blue Balls” – me thinks you need a release…….take the Katie for a ride….please…..this crankyness makes your forehead go all wrinkley anyway!!

Would you be able to find out as much as you can about the ‘Horton’ in October? Might be a few OB’s keen on turning up!

    Hey Moto,
It would take you about the same time to get to the Yellow Mountain race! And the way that race fills up these days, you’d have a better chance of getting into this race. I think you should consider having a go at it! Or though, I did notice that Ben Williams is coming first in the Northern Inland series – he WON the Over 450 class and came 3rd outright at Yellow Mountain……..You could take him down!!!!
    What do you reckon?

####JACOB SMITH WINS THE SAFARI ON HIS HONDA CRF450####

    (pasted most from site)

Smith becomes youngest ever Safari winner

Twenty-year old Condobolin rider, Jacob Smith, has become the youngest ever winner of the Australasian Safari after dominating the seven-day event, which finished in the Western Australian gold mining city of Kalgoorlie today.

Riding a Honda CRF 450X, Smith took the lead on the third of the event’s 19 timed stages and finished the 3771 kilometre event 14 minutes and 18 seconds ahead of his brother, Todd Smith, riding a KTM. Defending champion, Ben Grabham, also on a KTM, was third, three minutes 30 seconds further back.

The final day of the off-road marathon saw competitors tackle two stages on a 165 kilometre loop out of the gold mining city of Kalgoorlie. Navigational skills were really tested over a number of tricky station tracks.

Ben Grabham started the event as hot favourite in the bike section after winning the past two Safaris, but his hopes of a third straight win ended on day two when he lost a rear tyre and dropped over an hour to the Smith brothers.

From then on, Jacob Smith controlled the event, and the third year apprentice linesman was elated with his victory.

“It’s fantastic to beat to Ben (Grabham) as he’s the best rider in Australia,” Smith said. “Any time you can beat him it’s a good achievement. It’s my third Safari, so it’s third time lucky – I was second in 2007, and had an engine failure last year.”

While he wasn’t the event favourite, Smith was always aiming for victory.

“I always race to win, I don’t do it for second, but it was such a strong field it was always going to be tough. But after the first few days I knew I could do it.”

Having his 24-year old brother in second place was an added bonus.

“We work together, even though we’re on different teams, and we support each other,” Smith said. “We always wanted to be 1-2, it was just a case of who was first and who was second.”

Anything but a full-time professional rider, Smith will be back at work on Monday morning, less than 48 hours after his historic victory.

Fourth placed Ivan Erceg was the first Western Australian rider home on his KTM, easily taking his best ever Safari result. He finished over half an hour clear of South Australian David Scwharz on a Husaberg.

“Coming into the event I was hoping for a top ten finish, but I never thought I’d be this high. I’m stoked with the result,” Erceg said.

Swedish rider, Annie Seel, relished her first Safari experience, and reaped praise on the event and her fellow-competitors.

“I think if you want to do the Dakar in Argentina then you need to do this event first as a training event,” the 40-year old veteran said. “I’m going to try to sell the event back home and get more competitors for next year.

“I was particularly impressed by how fast the locals ride with the navigation. An Aussie team in the Dakar could do very well. For me, this event was as tough as the Dakar.”

Final results, 2009 Australasian Safari (provisional)

    MOTO
    1 Jacob SMITH (NSW), Honda CRF 450 X, 22h 58m 09s
    2 Todd SMITH (NSW), KTM 530 EXC, +14m 18s
    3 Ben GRABHAM (NSW), KTM 530 EXC, +17m 48s
    4 Ivan ERCEG (WA), KTM 450 EXC, +1h 58m 57s
    5 David SCHWARZ (SA), Husaberg, +2hrs 32m 25s

It looks like Ecks relo, David Finlay on his 610 Husky, finished 27th of the 41 who finished, from the 54 who started last Sunday – TOP EFFORT, WELL DONE, SOMETHING TO BE VERY PROUD! – I RECKON!

    Dear Boony, Bollocks & Eagle,
I’ve been checking in regularly on the step by step construction of this Nundle ride. I reckon, with all this preparation, it’s guaranteed to be 1st class.
I really appreciate all the effort you’ve all put in. Especially the local attractions you will be viewing!
With recent developments, I’ve decided not to come. Yeah I know…..big nancy and all the rest…I’ll live with that.
I apologise for any dramas it may cause. Please let me know if there are any financial committements I need to contribute to…I don’t want anyone to be ‘out of pocket’ for my late withdrawl.
Once again, I’m sorry for such a late change in my plans.
I hope you all have a great, enjoyable and most of all, Safe ride.

As far as bike riding goes……….

in the past……ridng trips with TB & Chicken

    I like having a go at things….

    # making the decision to go “hard & fast” not “easy & safe” at porkchop in the ’06 A4DE…with everything to lose and not much to gain.

    # then telling everyone what a mess I made at the top…and having them laugh their guts up at me!!! gold!!!

    # hearing the rev limiter on the fiddy telling the pilot “…that’s enough donkey!”

    # not giving in to TB when he rounds me up when going at it..fiddy style!

    # trying to only overtake around the outside of corners!

    # OB rides in new areas.

    # Seeing the Aussie bush

    nuff for now!
