All the best moto, hope your thumb doesn’t fall off once the wire is removed! 😆

Bruce, Honda emblem? Only if it was in Blue ink!

Mr B, I’m not even convinced this is age related. I recall in my younger days I would have good rides and absolute shockers. I’m in a similar situation to yourself at the moment – although I’m not the oldest in most of my riding groups. Since Christmas ’07 I have struggled with confidence on any bike due to a huge get-off involving a wallaby.

My latest strategy is to find a ride that works for me and just keep doing it until I get happy with the bike again. At the moment I am still finding my bike legs with this new WRF. Once we are on speaking terms, this bike and I, I am sure things will improve between us!

I know I can ride better and faster than I did last weekend. Even though I enjoyed myself I just wasn’t at one with the bike most of the time. That’s purely mental so I figure I’ll train my brain to the bike and I’ll be right!

Not a bad idea slug, I was thinking about one for myself, as I am being roped into being a support monkey for my brother-in-law who is riding the Aus Safari this year. I’ll be picking TB’s brain before much longer, I just need to work out what the BIL has in mind so I can start planning!

We had 3 orange to 2 blue on Saturday, with the Gasser thrown in for good measure. I can see why people get blue, its the same reason I did. The KTM thing is, in my opinion, based on the preception that KTM’s are race bikes and that all these guys are racer wannabe’s! Maybe that’s a touch harsh really, I did get one on ’06 to get myself back into bikes.

At the time I thought they had the build quality etc. After 6 months of owning mine I was putting it on the market because I was sick of stripped bolts, dungy looking old plastics and the weight and height of the thing (it was a ’99 model 640). So I’ll concede that my anti-KTM feelings have a basis on one older model that shit me off so much I don’t want another one! Then again, my anti-2-stroke feelings come from one old RM125 that shat itself 15km from nowhere in the middle of summer, leaving me a looooong push… Still not forgotten or forgiven that one!

Yeah Moto, I’m not slagging the pegs as I know that this is a long formed habit of mine. If I can change my riding style enough it won’t be a problem. I suspect that I may have picked a bad ride to start using them, considering it was 5 hours of the toughest riding I’ve ever done, followed by another hour or so… Start small might have been a better idea!

Well I promised more of a review on the Pivot pegs so here’s me initial impressions:

For the first 200m it feels like something is just wrong on the bike, but after that, and especially if you ignore them, these things really are pretty good. I wouldn’t call the pivot action subtle on my bike though, it is quite noticable – and hard to ignore!

A few comments before I go on:

    1. Adjust the rear brake pedal lower or you’ll be wishing you did so before.
    2. With the WR I found some nice new marks on the kickstarter – I can only assume these are a result of the pegs hitting when kickstarting – something I did far too much of on Saturday! Not serious but worth mentioning.
    3. Fitting is MUCH easier with help! Getting the hole lined up against the pressure of the spring then somehow getting the pin into the hole is tricky. 10 minute job max with a mate though.

Ok, back to riding the bike with the pegs. When alternating between standing and sitting they are quite good and give you easier access to the brake and gear shifter, and when I was in the zone and it all worked they were great. The reason this worked for me is that this kind of riding usually sees me with my feet in only one position. I often ride with my toe or heel on the peg, depending on where I am and what I am doing. With the pivoting action this becomes redundant and problematic. So, the problem is really with me, not the pegs. This being the case, I often found myself locking the rear (due to not following point number 1 above!) or riding duck-footed – or both. I think the problem for me comes from my previous habit of moving around on the pegs a lot. It is a habit I will find hard to break I think.

I’m going to give them another go on the Zig Zag to Hill End OBT ride after which it will be crunch time. If I don’t like them they will be packed back in the box and most likely sold to a more deserving owner!

Good stuff T’s B! Know what you mean about the kick start – and I suspect our route through there was on slightly harder tracks than those you went on today! Gotta get a new battery ASAP!!!

Hope to see you out there sometime!

Hows the WR compare to the DRZ??

    Cheers
    Mal.

Mate, chalk and cheese! I reckon I’m riding at the same level on the WR stock as I was on the DRZ with RG3 suspension and after riding it for 18 months. It feels so good, mostly! I do need to sort out the forks though, I am not happy with them. And running a filter skin made it run rich, so will need to lean it out a bit, especially for the Clarence area. This thing is so much lighter than the mighty banana it just isn’t funny. I’m not coping with getting over large logs (over about 14 inches diameter or so) but if I had to I could lift/drag the WR over where with the banana I was looking for ways around. Of course once I was shagged yesterday I was going around anyway!

Man, 6 months (less actually) off the bike and how bloody unfit did I get! And losing the feel for riding! Need to spend more time on the thing I reckon!

Wasn’t a posted ride at all, so this was not the one he was talking about. Just txt messages and phone calls when the missus wasn’t looking!

Nah, not DBW, not OBT, just secret handshake only! I just called in a few mates thats all!

Hmmm… jury is out on the Pivots, I’ll do a proper review when my brain comes back from wherever it has gone! I’ll just say that when I was in a groove and not thinking about them they were good, and the rest of the time they were at best a distraction!

We are a long way out yet but I’ll throw the hat in the ring as a tentative at this stage. I know Burraga – been there for work, great riding country!

There is a website (which I now can’t find) where you could put in a submission. I put in my 2c but don’t expect anything useful to come out of it. In the quoted report they mention that rock climbers are going to be allowed in to these closed areas with a permit system, so I suggested they have dedicated tracks for motorbikes with a similar permit system – more money for them with minimal changes or expenditure. But I’m talking common sense so I may as well have put my submission in in Japanese!
