Have you been cleaning and lubing your chain after every ride?
I don’t really take any notice of how many km or how I get out of a set, I just have a look at them every so often and if I they look a bit tired I replace them. I clean and lube the chain after almost every ride. If I am riding a couple of days in a row then I might spray some lube on it before the second day if I think of it.
Who said yours need replacing?
Wise words/question Jeffo!!
I don’t particularly care about the amount of KM, because I can get up to 10K worth of km before I need to change them, BUT i am on a different beast (aka adventure bike) that doesn’t have the on the ground power you crazing trail riders have. :woohoo:
However for my two bobbs worth I also recommend steel sprockets and an o’ring chain. I got my chain through Torpedo 7. It’s a DID chain.
I also don’t really subscribe to determining chain/sproket wear through a cleaning regime. I pretty much only lubricate the chain after a wash of the bike……….which admittedly could be several rides apart   This isn’t because I don’t think it might need it, I just forget or run outta time……more riding….less cleaning!! Again I don’t put my bikes through the same amount of sand or mud.
Probably all wrong and bad advise or suggestions, but it is what it is and it hasn’t hurt me yet.

O Yes!!! Let the games begin…. this should be interesting for all.
Hey everybody…..if it all goes wrong (like getting lost in the desert somewhere) do we think they will start eating each other aka “Load of the Flies” style??
In this scenario I think PTW is most likely the winner, he’s the only one that can run, also considering his role of comic relief they will need him until the end.BTW I didn’t know you guys were traveling in the special bus………if I had known you didn’t have a cool ride I would have tried to organize something for you. Thank goodness you have the bikes on the back to look cool.
Have fun and be careful you three idiots!!!

Hey Alyssa,
This is a great idea, thanks for passing on the information. :woohoo:
That is the weekend before the 2 day nav ride so I should be good to come along, just need to check out the details, so again thanks for ‘heads up’. Without this sort of information being passed on we probably would not know it was on.
Where is Oldgirl, Whiskey, Rach, Rachel and others?????What a great opportunity. Common Girls 😆 😆
Cheers,

Happy Birthday Chris and thanks for everything you do to keep Old Bulls online!!

Hi Trailraider,
That is one very pimped out ride you have there, GREAT job with the sticker kit.
I stickered up my WRR for the APC with the help of a local graphic/sticker place. When I started talking to them about it they asked me if I had the faring layout that you can get from the manufacturers. This is a file the graphics people can easily upload to their programme and it makes the process all really easy for them. It kinda gives them dimensions of the plastics to work with and essentially allows them to cut the outlines in the perfect shape.
I’m not sure but I think these are now somewhat easy to get from the manufactures or probably available on the internet (everything is these days).Unfortunately for us Adv bike owners with safari tanks or alike, these graphic files have not been done, so we had to do the old fashion measure the tank and a bit of trial and error. Also I was not able to get as technical with mine as you have done with the ghost graphic or water mark look.
Have I mentioned how spanking your bike is? :woohoo: :silly:
From memory my graphic did not cost as much, but that is because the standard of plastic/stickers used and the style I used was a lot less quality.
Would you believe, Singleton Motorcycles do these sorts of graphics for bikes as well, and I hear they are well priced. So somebody in the Hunter May wish to ask them. I used a small shop called the Blue Shed (??).
Just for the record here are two photos of my WRR before and after. I am also about to get the stickers redone as they haven’t fared so well after a few falls and fuel tank overflows.

Cheers,
Flying FishOMG what incredible photos and amazing riding. Thanks for sharing those with us.

Hi Lefty,
Nice new bags for the bike there, great birthday present.
I certainly do not think I have THE right system, but what I am currently using seems to be working well for me. I have done a few trips and I have used a couple of different bags (Andy Strapz and Wolfman), and I am now starting to get an idea of what works and doesn’t work (for me  ). But it really depends on how long I am going away for etc…
On last years APC I used Andy Strapz panniers, I also used the 20 litre water container idea inside the pannier. That works a treat because you can simply pull the container out to access your gear and it just seems an easy way to pack. Unfortunately I broke the Velcro straps on these panniers. (NO fault of the manufacture, I didn’t have the right racks,,,, I was also over loaded). I realised that the bigger the bags-the more stuff we seem to pack.
After that I got the Wolfman bags, so I now have the same set up as you. The duffel bag across the back and the same panniers.
In the duffel bag I put, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat (or in my case air matters and electric pump) and anything else that only relates to sleeping/camping gear. Depending on the ride I will also put some cooking gear in this bag. By having this bag only contain this gear, if I don’t camp I don’t need to open the bag or even take it off the bike. Less energy used and less effort the next day repacking.
I also like that this bag is water tight so this gear is safe and dry, even if the bike takes a dunk in a creek. Nothing worse than wet camping/sleeping gear!!!!
The Wolfman panniers are smaller than the Andy’s and I actually like this (because i take less stuff), but I really miss the added stability of the container gave to the Andy’s panniers. The Wolfman system doesn’t have this.
The best I have found to overcome this is to use Packing Cells and Roll Top bags to organise the contents of the panniers. These packing cells are a great idea, there are a few varieties, but the ones I have are from Kathmandu. There are different styles, sizes and colours. They help you organise your gear so you know where everything is at just a glance and you don’t have to rummage around the panniers just to find one thing. So tee-shirts and jeans in one, and toiletries in another etc…i think you get my point. The best thing is that fit into the Wolfman panniers really well.
See three different size Packing Cells.
(note. camel pack only there for size comparison)If I’m seriously camping and carrying food I have two small soft eskies that I use. The ones I have again fit perfectly into the Wolfman bags. I also improved these by my lining them with a high grade insulation tape. All from Bunnings. This now can keep meat frozen for about 12 hrs.
Esky
Tools are kept in another tool bag that is strapped to the very back of my bike. This is kept to only what I absolutely need for tire change or minor repairs. Larger tire levers or spare clutch and break levers are zip tied to the inside of the pannier rack. The tool bag is accessible without removing any other bags and does not get removed from the bike at night.
Again, if I’m camping I like to carry a chair, but those three legged things are a night mare. In some cases a table is nice for food prep etc. I recently found a butterfly chair and a very small take that are nothing short of brilliant for this sort of thing. They are called Helinox (google it), they are expensive, but it’s bloody good. Apparently you can get the same chairs from other people and cheaper (called butterfly chairs), but I’m not sure about the table. These two items sit in front of the duffel bag, across my seat.
I also carry a tank bag for smaller stuff like other people have mentioned.
I find accessing the panniers easier than the duffel bag, so once its packs it’s not coming off until I need a sleeping bag or tent at the end of the day.
So until I see a better system, this is the one for me. But the important point here is to organise your stuff into areas that you;
a) know where it is and,
b) access it only when you want or need it.
Water…..I have seen a great expandable soft expandable water container that you can strap across the back of your gear, but i dont have this yet. . Maybe somebody else knows what it’s called??
It goes without saying that I didn’t come up with all these ideas and was shown by somebody else.
If it works, share it around!!Flying Fish
Happy Birthday mate, Hope your days is great and TB made you a nice breakfast…..Kransky’s…YUM…
Big hello to the family as well.

LET`S GO TODAY   :laugh:Big Thanx to Jeffro, I have a loan of his MoTow bike carrier. I was looking at buying one but not sure of the concept,, “Come check out mine and if you like it take it with you and store it while I`m Overseas” said the Big Fella
Well the pickup happened last night and well, the 690 fits fine on the back of the Cruiser,,,
With a couple of plugs for some OBT supporters thrown inEag’s if I haddn’t actually seen you ride that bike, looking at that pic I would think it’s a new bike off the show room floor. Do you spend 2 hours cleaning for every hour on the bike???
I don’t think I have washed my WR since Mick’s Wauchope ride, and the Beemers not in much better shape….might have to clean it this weekend

Hi Steve,
Great to have you at OBT….These guys and girls are a great bunch.
I assume it was Steve “Wolfman” Smith that pointed you in this direction…..he’s a very helpful guy and has great stuff, so you would have been in good hands.
I see you are planning on coming on the next two day Nav ride, great start!! Looking forward to meeting you and great bike you have for these rides. Don;t worry about being new to this adventure riding gig, everybody will be there for you and you will learn a heaps and meet great people. :woohoo:

Don’t worry ACE he did that to me on the first 2 day’er as well. Untill I figured it out!!!
Thats right Wiggster…….we’ve got your number
O Man I cant wait for this ride!! How many sleeps??
BTW Ace I’m planning on bringing my Latte machine for this one. As for tire choice I was probably going to put a Karoo on the back, but I might run something a little more aggressive on the front….but not sure what and if it will happen, just a thought at this time.

Happy Birthday Lefty, hope your day has been great!!
