I so can’t wait for this ride:) as far as insurance goes does that mean if we have a MA license that it won’t reduce the cost? Either way still can’t wait. Also this year at North Star there will be no cast iron pots allowed for cooking in the fire after the fines the EPA handed out for smoke pollution. Not mentioning any names ….. Ron 👿

Afraid not mate. Most Dalby Moto rides are going this way now. But the licence is now only $5 instead of $25. So when you weigh up $100 for a MA rec licence or $5 each ride, its not too bad.

Yes, Jeff does tend too waffle a bit on the PA system.

I don’t mind the dust either , way better than foggy goggles !!

Is the Copeton Dam a good event ??

    Nick

I found Copeton quite slow and very tight, due to a lot of small thick pine trees. Some are so close that they clip both handlebars at the same time. No magor hill climbs, but lots of rocky outcrops to manuver over. Plenty of half buried rocks that will do plenty of damage to 2-stroke pipes (not looking forward to that now im on one).
Also plenty of sand sections that rut up nicely as the race progresses.

I have the whole race on helmet cam but couldn’t be bothered putting on youtube Im afraid.

I was going to go but its a 4hr drive so 8 hrs driving for 4hr of riding.

I did ironman in the inverel round last year near Copeton dam, I came 4th. That last hour is a killer!

Should be right for Bike Teritory on the 19th May.

Sonds good, that’s what I did too. Just remember, south before 12pm and north after for pre-running.

As I said in my ride report, I was going to run 15/45 gearing, but after pre-running with 15/49 I decided to stay with that. It gave me more grunt in the woops and there was only a couple of times during the race that I was looking for another gear. Standard gearing for my bike is 13/49. So I went up 2 teeth on the front for Finke.

It’s hard to say what gearing you need as mine’s an MX and yours an enduro and I don’t know your riding ability. I think I was good for about 150km/hr with 15/49.

Finke is not as fast as it used to be and I would say that being able to do 140km/hr should be ok.

The best thing I can suggest is to take a 14t and 15t with you and do some pre-running when you get out there (i had as much fun pre-running as I did in the actual race) to determine whats best suited to you. Don’t go too small on the back if you can help it as you will then run the chain too close to your swing arm and wear out your chain guide.

Gearing is resonably inportant for Finke. If you go too high, the bike won’t pull through the woops as well, which can wear you out. If you go too low it will be screaming and you will be overtaken in the faster sections.

My best advice is to NOT try to ride like these guys. The desert will bite you and bite you hard. There has already been one death this year practicing for finke. Take it easy Training, Pre-Running and Racing.

    Nice Bike TB.

Have they made any changes to these compared to the earlier models? I didn’t think you could get anything newer than a 2010 plated 660.

Sorry Fellers. I haven’t been on here for a while.

Here is a bit of my Finke Preparation. Not boasting, but this is a must read for newbies to Finke as that is why I wrote it.

    And my ride report/tutorial

    http://www.obtrailriders.com/index.php/forum?view=topic&catid=2&id=129409

I was all set to go out this year until our air con unit decided to crap itself……twice.
It knocked a massive hole in my Finke buget. 2014 will be my next assult on the Finke track.

Could be interesting on the new bike.

    OH YEAH it has!!!!
But the finances aren’t with me. I’ve had the Air Con crap itself twice this year at $700 each time (bloody green frogs), so there goes any chance of Finke this year.

Pretty keen for Yellow Mountain though, if I’m still on the eastern side of Aust. I am currently applying for mining jobs in WA at Newman and Tom Price.

I have a new steed too!!
