Is there any chance of another suspension day happening.
Got a drz 400 and honestly don’t have a clue on setting up the suspension. It has been revalved and sprung to suit me but there is so much adjustment. Would like to learn more about suspension set up.

I used INOX but it stings like crazy.

I fitted the polyeurethane ones from South Africa. They are a nice tight fit, but had a bit of stuffing around to get the wheel assembly to fit into the swing arm. Had to grind a bit off the depth of the “cush rubbers” to make them fit.
They are definitely a harder compound, probably don’t offer as much cushioning but reports are they will last at least 50k.
Someone should should start moulding them in Australia.

What do you reckon yellow would look like on the grey plastics, to match the tank sticker>

I’ve never liked the grey and was wondering how to change the colour of it.

    Wigster

I found an all blue one on google images, so I knew what it would look like before I did it.
Search “xt660z colors” on google images and a fare way down you will see one with yellow plastics. To be honest not my cup of tea.

A good thread and made for an interesting read. :)

I’ll leave you to ponder the youth of today with this simple quote

    You can’t teach stupid ! :P

Yeah, next time you need help with your computer or your smart phone ask your Grandad because those kids are dumb

    STM

But STM computers and smart phones have a lot to do with some of the issues mentioned in this thread.

Nice work mate. I love what you have done with the grey plastics. Where did you get it done or did you do it yourself?

    (It’s given me an idea).

    Wigster

Thanks mate, I think it looks alright. I always thought the blue ones looked a bit weird around the tank area due to the grey plastic….no offense.
I think the grey one look good because tank and plastic are all the same colour.
I repair repairable writeoffs (we do expert repairs unlike some) as a bit of a sideline with a mate who it a panel beater and spray painter….so there’s your answer.
The blue Yamaha paint is very hard to get off the shelf as there many variations of Yamaha blue and Yamaha don’t provide a paint code on the bike like a car. I had it made up by matching it to the front mudguard.
There’s also a bit of a process in painting plastic, you need to apply a special plastic primer first then undercoat then the base coat (that’s the blue) then the top clear coat.

Thanks TB, I think I’ll give these polyurethane cush drives a go. Just don’t want to have an issue in the Gibson when doing the east to west.
Wigster, call your nearest Yamaha dealer, I recon they would be on the shelf considering the rate they destroy themselves.

    Nice looking bike there TB.
Oh, and points noted re the Kev mod.
What brand is that radiator guard?

in reply to: Solar hot water, worth the expense? #249606

With regard to instant hot water systems…..if you have to buy bottled gas, it will work out very expensive. They may only use gas when you need hot water but there is a large amount of heat lost that doesn’t heat water. I had one and ripped it out and had solar installed, 300l on roof, family of 4 inc 2 teenagers. On average I think would save a lot on energy costs, but I live in Qld so the sun shines a bit. If had the chance I would install a 400l though just for a bit extra.

Am setting up for a trip to Birdsville and I thought it might be worth a try. There will no doubt be a few long straight runs.
They are about $22 on eBay.
    Thanks for the input.

I think from memory I ran 15/42 gearing on mine for longer rides.

I’m going to run 15/44. When you go up 1 tooth on the front sprocket do you need to modify anything to make it all work such as chain guide etc. or remove sprocket cover?

Gotowo, Have you got the alloy protector plate fitted? Not an issue I had with my DRZ and I have a 12 year old RMX which use the exactly the same reservoir and all seems good.

Yes its all original and 4 yrs old. only done 2000klm.
Ive noticed on Thumpertalk that a few DRZ’s also have this problem with the plastic reservoir bulging. The plastic bulges out about 1mm along each of the long sides, enough for it to leak or catch water. I only noticed it when I changed the brake fluid for the 1st time.
I didnt want to replace it with an original part in case it happens again. Some guys have replaced it with a CRF450 reservoir and master cylinder….but this seems overkill.
I guess I’ll order a new plastic one and see how it goes.

in reply to: DRZ Forks bent #206696

    Everything is now all OK.
Got the bike this morning and pulled the front wheel off checked the axel for straightness…. OK.
Pulled the forks out put them in the vise spun the tube to check if they were bent….OK.
Put it all back together went for a test ride and its all fixed.

Something must have been out of alignment but I dont know what.
Its all good now… ..I didnt know the how hard or easy it would be to bend the forks.. I now know its hard.
What threw me was the guy at the shop thought the forks looked bent.

Thanks heaps fellas, appreciate your advise.

in reply to: DRZ Forks bent #206618

Thanks for the advice fellas…… think I’ll pick the bike up from the shop and have a closer look myself.

in reply to: DRZ Forks bent #206649

I did loosen the fork clamps to straighten the handlebars,……didnt think about the axel.
The forks are both level in the clamps and the wheel seems OK ie not out of round.
Could be a bent axel but its not noticeable.
The suspension guy cant look at it before this Friday, will keep you all posted.
