thanks for the intro. If I was looking for a 2 banger in that class, I would definately go either the Gas Gas 300 or the KTM 300. They have the 2 stroke poke along with the tractor low rev torque of a 4 stroke. I rode the 300 kato for an hour in the bush last week and had a ball on the thing and I was secretly disappointed when I had to hand it back to its owner.
Cheers
MickIs that an admission.
, you now have a secret desire for orange, don’t you. Move over Big Red Pig, there is a new filly on the way.

Trailboss wrote:Great write Jim really good points mate. The moderators and myself have been watching the rec rego thread with the odd call discussing things as there is a heap of passion involved in the subject and opinions which is great I know a few people were sent a PM saying be careful we don’t want it to become personal and everyone should be congratulated on how such a passionate thread has been conducted without a drama. You are right about the things you have written there most members wouldnt know that we have here at OBT been pinned before for track marking on the north coast by national park rangers. When infact it was the local mountain bike club that had marked the trails. We got pinned and contacted here because bikes had been seen in the area and they had OBT stickers. Once cleared up it was all good but it took some sorting.
My hate is over ridden areas and unregistered loud bikes both which do the reputation of the sport I love unrepairable damage. I have copped a lot a flack about my stand on unregistered bikes on Old Bull rides with even riders in the area the ride was being run saying “as locals thats their area and as such they should be able to ride their unregistered bike because it’s their area” well the state forest belongs to us all. I have also copped my share about my stance on over ridden areas but I know it’s what the state forests, NWPS and the powers to be use to shut our riding areas. I want this sport to be there for my boys to enjoy, I have been doing it now for nearly 40 years (yes maybe I am now a whinging old bastard) it was easier years ago and I know that I have contributed in my younger years to the over ridden areas and some of the sports problems. I have had problems with the police here where I live because of unregistered pit bikes riding the streets, I was visited and thought guilty because I owned bikes, one of those bikes I was told must be unregistered because it has race numbers on it! Imagine the coppers surprise when he found you can have numbers on registered bike. Thought to be guilty because I own bikes, the offender in question wasn’t caught by the police but sorted by some of us locals who explained the heat others were getting and how it would go his way unless he stopped, which he did.
I cant imagine not be involved with bikes, with riding and the (mostly) amazing people that our sport brings together on a whole. I love the excitement that the sport brings when riding also when people stop and you see it in their eyes, hear it in their voice and their laughter. I still don’t sleep the night before most rides especially the bigger ones and never the night before a race, excited, nervous, worried everything wil be ok be it everyone will enjoy the ride to I hope my bike is prepared. I love it
The hassles and crap that goes into organising a ride or OBTs day to day running at times leaves me saying and thinking why bother as some are quick to point out anything you haven’t done perfectly as we all know hind site is 20 20 vision. There are many reasons we do it but for me today seeing the passion in your post makes it all worth while
Cheers Jim

I hole heartedly apologies to any one that I may have upset with my comments, there was never any intention to cause despair to any one. But I make no apology what so ever for what I have written as these are my opinions and as this is an open forum I think I am quite entitled to make them, if not, so be it.I get so frustrated after spend the 25 to nearly 30 yrs in the back ground trying to promote the good point of our “sport”, only to find the you win over 1 person of some good to you cause only to loose the next 2 through the actions of some idiot. Users of State and Federal parks have a bad enough name as it is, and the only thing that will improve if at all is not to give you foe any ammo to use against you. I have been around for a while and have done quite a bit of bush bashing as well, but I have all ways tried not to bring to much attention to my actions. I would not be placing hard evidence (photo) on an open forum, as total disregard for the bush which is the way that it appears.
One should consider that it is not you name appearing at the top of the page but The Old Bull Trail Riders and as such the admin will cop the shit first and not you. It is not your god given rite to fang around on crown land, it is that you are allowed to use it and if matters get much worse then they already are then They will just lock them down. It has been happening quite a bit down our way, with large areas of bush land being closed down to public access. Eg on the road between Koeton and Wheelers Creek thousands of acres shut up and declared wilderness also around Locharts Gap same thing and you can go on and on about it,I suppose you have the same thing up north?
It is up to the younger people to do the rite thing and look after your ride areas as use old farts are getting sick of bashing our heads against a brick wall so to speak, as my time has come to a very abrupt due to health problems. But I will still be out riding in the bush when I feel up to it.
Best wishes to all and catch you later.

Ride it 45 times a year = $8.69 per ride
8.68 per ride people you spend more on petrol per ride, more on energy bars and snakes more on beers after the ride

From where Scotty? cheapest for my DRZ is $380 most expensive is $475
Thats using the rta greenslip calc too
Paid mine last saturday, alliance $277 and $110 for rego, I do have an impeccable driving record though.

a few points a lot, actually a hell of a lot of professional riders use MX bikes with tweaks as race bikes for enduro, the national H&Hound series in the USA is basically dominated by MX bikes, 2T at that.
Now I know most of us aren’t even at clubman level if we were competitiors, however some of us like a responsive bike.
There have been many examples of factories fitting bikes out with ADR type equipment and then seeling them as “enduro”Factory bikes not, production bikes-have had the money spent to change them
And the qualifications to descern betwixt bikes… well I have been race prepping and building bikes for myself and others since well teenage years. this is not rocket science it’s very basic stuff the only real areas that can’t be easily tweaked is lateral bump absorption as typically an MXer has more frame feedback and is stiffer in the headstock area and runds a slightly shorter wheelbase, which to me is more conducive to ST anyway.Enduro bikes on a whole are far more “boring to ride” Bring this up with the manufacturers, someone said the MXers had less lowend power, less low end torque well mostly this is a furphy, they mostly have less inertia, flywheel effect, in fact they have more power everywhere for a given capacity.Yes, but in the hands of most, are not suited to enduro riding. Someone like yourself can ride any bike, and make it work when it is not designed to, but we are talking about the masses here
Someone else trotted out the “how long I’ve been riding for caper”…. I’ll let that one go methinks, don’t need to start the whole my dick is bigger cwap, those who know me know what my whole life has revolved around.
each rider is different, some of us like slow response heavy bikes they make them feel planted and safe, some like bags of torque, others like instant zap and lightweight, this is where both the 4T and 2T MXer’s rule.
I agree with Menace too, the Vicco system is fairly easy to get through, and it seems to me that some people want to be elitist, Not being elitist, just concerned about safeguarding the sport for all to enjoy for years to comewell I have been through that stage when MY sport got popular, I wanted to jump up and down and tell all the modern adult entrants to pay their dues with being hassled and being made to be an outcast at school for being one of only half a dozen bike riders, but then I realised … “for the same reason I have enjoyed and been able to enjoy should be open to anyone with the ability, it’s a freedom that many should be able to persue in a free world. always remembering that with certain freedoms come responsibility which was why I actually started this thread in the first place.
We should not look down upon others who may ride older or less expensive bikes, Not sure where this has come from, no mention of old or less expensivewe should be giving them an opportunity to ride safely and legally, that opportunity exist today this was reinforced recently by a stalwart of the motorcycle fraternity to me locally, he is proposing and self-financing a falttrack club for juniors to help give somewhere for all the kids on older bikes to ride and have a bit of fun, in a controlled and mildly competitive environment, and seeing as the people he has coached and fostered in this sport (including Our most ever successful world champion) I believe his approach is right, and rec rego could actually be a good follow on.exactly right, a controlled environment, once in the bush there is no control unless you have to abide by the law
Not everybody has the resources to buy, maintain and full rego a 2011 FE570…
Maintanence on old or new is similar and is a given for the sport, rego is cheap, the greenslip is the issue, get that rectified and we are on a winner.
Bruce, I am glad for the discussion to be in the public arena, and think that it is healthy to have different opinions, mine is different to yours on this matter, my responses are in no way an attack on your person
cheers Hatto
Scotty wrote:Hatto, In Australia all vehicle must have ADR compliance to be eligible for full registration. In Victoria bike don’t need to be ADR compliant to obtain Rec Rego. That is not going to be the case here in NSW’s. Only ADR compliant bike will be able to get Rec Rego. It will be a cheap way for those who have ADR bikes and don’t what to ride roads to register there bikes. It is yet to be seen yet how much cheaper it will be. Green slips have come down in price for the majority of dirt bikes over the past year with a changing of the capacity scale. From what CJ has said they are still lobbying to have motorcycle green slips reduced even further. If this happens the price difference between full Rego and Rec Rego could be even smaller.
I do giggle at those who go out and buy $13000+ dirtbike, go throw even more cash on aftermarket parts, performance bits and riding gear than complain that registration is making the sport too expensive.
That was my understanding, so what this is all about is example-ktm450 exc registered V’S ktm450 exc unregistered.
Rego component ktm 450 = 110.00 ride anywhere, any time
Rec Rego comp ktm 450 = 80.00 (vic) restricted to 45 daysIf this is right-whole shebang is a waste if time.
Lets concentrate on the greenslip component and all ride registered bikes-done dealhatto
Scotty wrote:menace wrote:no one checks up on rec rego either Scotty, just like they dont with our cars either. no yearly RWC for us.
green slips and pink slips are just feeding the hungry insurance bastards..
I agree with you about greedy insurers on green slips but pink slips have nothing at all to do with insurance companies they are a yearly safety inspection making sure our vehicles are safe to drive on the roads. Things like tyres, brakes, suspension etc are all checked. Who checks these things in Vic or does everybody just drive unroadworthy busted and broken shitboxes?
As for rec rego up here it’s pointless everybody arguing about non ADR bikes as the proposal put forward is for ADR bikes only. If people want to ride an MX bikes in the bush legally then they will need to travel South of the border.
What is the difference between ADR compliant and full regoed bikes
