OK why do you think it needs a refresh? How many hrs has it done? Or klms if it doesnt have and hour meter? Does it use oil, blow smoke?
TB
6400kms, no oil use, no smoke, but on the weekend it just sounded different, not the normal rattle, but a like a little knock

Ok, so they are going to be replaced in the not to distant future, bit left in them yet, thats the breaks sorted, what discs – same as original, solids, solids with holes etc – trail riding only
cheers hatto

I have 2 questions, which the collective brains trust on here may have the answers:1-How can you tell if it’s time for a top end refresh, are there any visible signs/noises, km’s etc
2-When is it time to change break discs, mine have worn down some and have a few grooves but still seem to work well except for pulsing(on/off/on/off type feel), but they still pull me up good. If it is time to replace, which ones why and how much. there seems to be a huge difference in prices etc
cheers Hatto
Are talking 2 or 4 stroke???
The pulsing you speak of will more then likely be a bent disc, there is no other reason really for that problem
Thats was my thinking, but thought I’d just ask some people who are way smarter than me
ktm450 jesus give me a chance

I guess a compression test would be a good indicator of when a top end rebuild is iminent. Also if starts sounding rattly.
Just checked the 525 manual and it says that if any part of the brake discs are worn beloww 2.8mm its time to replace them. We have just changed my sons rear disc on the KTM 200 at 2.25mm so I guess there is a bit of lee way. We bought an after market disc with new pads for $200
Hope this help ya out
Cheers
Murphcheers murph, whats involved in compression test

Quote:Dunno why you think it is a gay thread title  The reason I called it that, is because not only did we ride the bush, we were out in the fields as well, there is some great natural terrain and a great hill for practicing wheelies on. It is just a dream place to have at our disposal to ride when ever we like. :woohoo: As far as the potential of the place to be an even better ride spot, we haven’t even scratched the surface really. As for Connor blitzing me, that doesn’t worry me in the least, makes me very proud actually.
Experience doesn’t help either because kids don’t ride with monday in mind  , at the moment I am relying on horsepower alone to gain any advantage over him  .I am looking forward to showing you the place TB.
Don’t forget this south Coast wood duck, happy to clear trails, drink beer, have bbq’s, ride and enjoy riding with youngns.

Anyway it all worked out well so thanks for the advise….DustyBallards have a tool thingy which is supposed to make it easy (90.00) anyone used one, I have 2 to do

I have done a couple of them over the years just using a socket and extension bar to knock them out with the swing arm still in the bike without any problems. Just place the bike on the bike stand, unbolt the shock, lift it out then drive out the old bush and fit in new one. Should only take about half an hour and a couple of beers

Cheers Mickp – shed time coming up
