i think thats the main issue with any kids bob they grow out of them quick im lucky theres 20 months between my 2 boys im gettin roughly 2 years out of each bike as they get handed down by the time i get the second year my youngest has well and truly grown to move on.
The ktm sx junior i have at its highest seat height is 600 mm and with the lowest its about570mm (this is with the lower seat that i have) ive seen other ktms have the stator problem but they also have the clutches set up so they are either a light switch on or off with there power so to get them going there working hard all the time but thats only the way you set the clutch up you can have these bikes a little bit tamer with a bit of mucking around.
I thought about going the crf 70 way but its also 20 kg heavier seat is 663mm tall and at that stage ( my boys were 6&8 and also short asses) didnt think it was the way to go
i feel for you mate its a hard to say which way you should go take him in to the honda dealer and see if he could go a crf70.
what ever bike you buy it wont last that long before they grow out of it but the key is ( i think anyway ) dont but to much bike so they keep on falling off and dont want to get back on itjimmy wrote:You can’t compare a CRF50 with a KTM 50. The step up is from PW/CRF50 to a fast 50 i.e. a KTM. They are chalk and cheese. The KTM seems like its what you are after if your son has outgrown a PW50. However he won’t last long on a fast 50 either.
My young bloke went straight from a CRF to a KX65 when he was 8 and a half but it shattered his confidence a bit. I was trying to dodge the fast 50 because they drive me nuts at race days. They are a good bike though I have heard the clutch can give you grief. Might be more of a poor maintenance problem though.
So….. skip the CRF and give the KTM a go.I reckon the CRF is a great starting point, not step two. I am not a fan of the pumpkin coloured brand either. I had to cover the ktm bit on my Husabergs compliance plate with black texta lol.totally agree with you that you cant compare the crf to a ktm like i said its which way you want to go with your kids, just an idea with stepping up to a 65 for future reference add a fly wheel weight at first just to tame the snap of a 65 these little buggers will surprise you nlet alone your kids
just for the record though im not saying the crfs are no good it depends what you want for a bike for your kids im just saying there not a bad bike and have been reliable for me theres plenty of bike for them to grow into
yeah mate i will admit its easy to get confused with the variying types the senior and junior are water cooled the junior has drum rear brake
14mm carb(senior 19mm)just detunes it abit
10 inch wheels (senior has 12 inch front) just a smaller frame
the mini adventures are aircooled
in 2009 i think they just changed the names of the seniors to mini sx
but i will say one thing im not sure about all models of ktm minis both my boys 50 and 65 are 08 models which is the end of the beta motors( which the husky 50s and 65 have in them now) and they have been bullet proof and will be buying another 08 ktm 65 for the upgrade of the youngest boys bike this yearand for christ sake I can’t bring myself to buy a KTM 50 sx mini
Why not? my boys have had a 08 ktm 50 sx junior for 2 1/2 years its the one with the senior motor (water cooled)in a smaller frame and a 14mm carby ( the seniors have 19 mm) with the spring clutch its a very easy bike to ride at first and then ive added the washers to the clutch now(now there a bit more used to it) plus a 19 mm carby so its was a great bike for them to jump from a kdx 50 and plenty of room to progress with a lower seat that came with it ,. 2 holes for for the rear shock to adjust height
ive had them out in the bush with it on mx tracks its never missed a beat (it was getting ridden every weekend somewhere not once a month) just put piston, rings, little end, mains bearings &seals, drive shaft bearings&seals, waterpump bearings &seals after 2 years of riding it and the whole lot cost $165 to do Cheap as and have got a new sticker kit and chain&sprockets coming for it and it will be under someone elses christmas tree this year and it will be still going strong for someone else
its been a great bike for my eldest progress to the 65 and the youngest will kiss the 50 goodbye and have a 65 for next year its taught them about 2 stroke power which in my books is greatyou will find some riding partners on here , my brother has had a tiger 800 for about 8 months he loves it
how lucky is this fella
what the TE range of berg are idividual??
he might have stacked it but it pis sed him off and he knocked a 1.29.65 out on his spare bike

i kno w a great loop over from stroud to buladelah and back boony but at the moment ive been doin the mx?/ridepark and ponyexpress thingy with an unregistered bike so im out but i might be able to put you in touch with someone you can stay at stroud pub, ride to buladelah refuel , eat ride back to stroud
plus one on the clip 5 on the needle sounds a bit rich there moto , razzle have a listen to what motos got to say when i bought my 2010 ktm 300 he give me advice on setting it up , with the jetting and needles it was exactly the way i wanted it
maybe i must have crashed differently  i had them on for 16 mths on the ktm and sold them with the bike, the plastics werent as good as quality though
what do you think of biketique hand guards moto, i had a set on my ktm and at first wondered how long they would last and i thought they were quite good and very reasonably priced
Isn’t 90/90 near as a gnat’s dick the same as a 80/100?? i.e. 81mm? Is that a stock Michy size, I haven’t used Michy’s for a while.
Quote:Michys have some funny sizes they are also hard to(at our local anyway) get hence why i have the 90/90 as it was the only one there but im pretty sure for the other bikes i ran a 90/100 wether it was slippery red clay of dungog or rocky old wallaroo they have been a good tyre for me, i wont buy anything else for the front but will try for a bit of value on the back tyre -
