    Hey Jak

the key is that YOU have to WANT to give up, you cant do it because the missus wants you too or you think you should, it has to be 100 % you.

Pete’s 100% right there Jak, I gave up in 2001 after many earlier failed attempts.

The difference came when I realised I really did want to quit, I was walking out to the car to go and buy a pack thinking to myself, “I don’t really want to give up, I’m only doing it because others think I should”. Before I got to the car though I realised that I really did want to quit and it got easier from there.

I reckon now it only take 5 minutes to quit, when a craing comes it will usually only last for 5 minutes before you are able to occupy your mind with something else. It will come back again after a little while but again it will only last about 5 minutes, try to be active when the cravings hit working on jobs aroud the house or stuff at work to help keep your mind off it. I gave up while the wife (now ex) kept smoking around me and telling me I was an idiot for even trying and encouraging me to have a smoke.

    Good Luck with it

Too late mate, I had already ordered from ebay when I posted. Thanks anyway.

Got it going again today, it seems i dislodged the starter diode when I put the tank back on. Plugged it back in and away it went.

Still going with the new relay though.

in reply to: WR450 Electrical Issue #224348

So rang around today chasing up a starter relay, $118.00 here. $20 + $15 postage from the states. I would love to buy here first but not at that price.

Maybe if you had the leg out you could have saved the drop and so not broken a bone.

in reply to: WR450 Electrical Issue #224303

    Un-freaking believable!!!

Problem solved (for the moment I thought, just need the new relay), anyway bolt the tank back on, fit the radiator shrouds, reinstall the head light. I’ll just check that all is well again before I refit the seat, turn the key on, all good. Hit the starter,,,,,,,,,,,,, nothing, not even a click. So I did the only reasonable thing I could do, went to a mates place and had a few beers, Monday is another day, too much to do tomoroow to play with it.

in reply to: WR450 Electrical Issue #224283

Thanks everyone for your help, problem now solved.

I disconnected the starter button altogether and it still wound over when I conncted the battery so that was it ruled out which really only left the starter relay. I pulled that out and very scientifically tapped it on the bench a few times, hooked it back up and Bingo, no more problem.

It is working perfectly now but I will order a new one on Monday and that should be the end of that (insert a fingers crossed smiley here). Between the new relay and the new starter motor that is coming I shouldn’t have anymore starting troubles for a while at least :D

Chris is right this is such an easy fix. The key being left on should have nothing to do with it because it’s on all day when you ride isn’t it?

I would be more concerned regarding the damage done up steam when the starter kept sticking in a few rides ago

Facts are there should be switch signal power at the starter solenoid unless the switch is pushed that activates the battery power fact l. You say the switch is ok well then it’s between the switch and the starter. Disconnect the starter turn it on and work backwards

Tell you what about 7 tomorrow morning I will be going past your place and will happily stop and diagnose it for you if you want. Ring me 0419 421334 after 5 am, I’d your up

Thanks for the offer mate, unfortunately I didn’t see it until now and seeing as I had my last drink about 2.00am this morning there is little chance I would have been able to get up for it anyway.

The starter wasn’t sticking on previously, the squealing noise was just the sound it made when I pushed the button.

Only been up a short time now so will head out to the shed and see what I can find.

If ya keen STM I would jump on soon as rumor has it the 70 degree engine is being discontinued to become part of dirt bike history that the likes of Moto will tell his grandchildren about.

Even second hand ones may be hard to pick up with some current owners reluctant to part with them.

It’s a shame as it was good to see at least one manufacturer who was prepared to think outside the square.

Your right mate. Not only is the 70 degree gone in 2013 but the 390 becomes a 350 so it will be a blue KTM.

    STM

So if it is gone then maybe it wasn’t as good as they had expected or hoped for.

Thank you gentlemen, all good thoughts and you have given me plenty to look for and that’s not to say I don’t welcome further comment but at the moment it is beer time so the solution will have to wait for tomorrow.
