Great rebuild! Do you reckon that sheila still looks that good in a bikini?

in reply to: my xr 400 #220990

I used an XR600 brake line on my old XR400. Was the going mod in the day. They were a great bike. my brother still has my old one(96)that I bought new. Was about the 3rd one they sold in Dubbo. Ballards re-valved the suspension and apart from that was a stock bike.
I rode it again the other day and it surprised me how good it still is to ride. They were a great bike. Why did they not go electric start and keep the XR name going???????
Enjoy it mate! No big end bearing failures or valve problems with an XR4 lol. Solid as an axe.

Nice….. It will be paste in the gear box oil now. Where did the metal come from though?

in reply to: 2012 WR450F Test and APC built #220555

Nah havnt. Had a quick look at one in the dealers in Mudgee.
I am sure they will be a good thing.
I just reckon they are a bit over hyped. For the price they shouldn’t be 128kg and need suspension work. Thats Jap bikes though I suppose.
Why do they all aim the springs for 75kg riders anyway? I reckon the majority of real life riders would be somewhere between 90 and 110kg.

Its a shame they cut the corner with the engine. Using the yz engine would have made for a bike that might match the hype in all the magazines. Too hard to fit the electric start to it apparently though.
I miss the days of Sidetracks truthful bike reviews.

    in reply to: get a grip… #219862

I use the air compressor to fit and remove as well. Just put pin hole in the end of the grip, fit the grip to the end of the bars, put the air duster nozzle in the pin hole and blow them on. Then cut the end out for the bark busters.
I used the scott glue for the first time, didn’t work all that well. Always wire them on.
I like the plain old scott grips. The more worn down the better I like them. Everyone is different though.

in reply to: 110 postie #219858

Things that went wrong with some CT/XL/XR farm bikes I have had that may be similar to a postie,

-blocked drain/breather hoses on carby. They have similar symptoms and its usually those bloody little wasps that build nests up the hoses and block them up. Try blowing them out with an air compressor.

-blocked jets, same with any carb, remove and blow them out.

-another great one but un-related is the slide needle wears out and they won’t idle.

-possibly the coil as well. They can pack it in and give similar symptoms.

Well done SB! Great result and sounds like a good track.
Crash I find it hard to commit to the 750. Work seems to get in the road and family commitments. To do it properly you need to spend a week getting the bike ready, and the race is a 4 day event by the time you get there and back.
Yellow Mountain will be my only real ride this year.

in reply to: KTM or HUSABERG #218727

I have a 2012 Husaberg 450. Seems like a good bike. The big advantage is its not orange. We all know orange bike are a bit gay.
As for the kick starter, or lack of one, the kick-starter on my CRF450X never got used once in 3 years of riding. Hoping the Berg is the same.
There are more differences than the engine between Bergs and KTM. Bergs have air filter access second to none, 5 second filter change. They have the quick release seat as well. So no tools filter access.
Plastic rear sub frame, better forks, there not orange.
I dont reckon the Berg goes as hard as my old CRF450 though.

in reply to: Brace yourself #218531

I bought a pair of Troy Lee braces when I got my new Berg from Sutto’s. They said it was only about the third pair they had sold to someone “before” they had damaged their knees!!
Took about 10 minutes to get used to riding in them.
I bought them after seeing what happened to my nephews knee after he landed awkwardly from a jump. They fixed his knee, but he will need a knee replacement at 40!! Torn ligaments, shattered knee joint, broken leg!! He didn’t even fall off the bike. Not to mention 3 months off work.

Just got the same letter for my Berg. They already had the larger filter fitted when I picked it up in January.

Mate if they did something about theses scrums (like made them pack them properly) I might watch it. How do they get away with them after all these years?

in reply to: Taken for a ride. Not a good ride though. #210526

That sure looks like a well used XR lol. XR’s Only exhaust shield?

Nice to see so much willing help out there!

in reply to: Chain length?? #217421

One tooth on the front sprocket changes the gearing way more than a couple on the back. Plus you can run the same chain length and it only takes 5 minutes to swap it rather than half an hour for the rear sprocket. Yes you should run new chain on new sprockets.
One tooth on the front bigger on my CRF took it from 110 flat to 145 flat which is all I did to race at yellow mountain (changed sprocket and chain as a set though).
However, the tool you need to use for snotty hill climbs is the power application lever (some people call these the clutch lever). That is how you control wheel spin and give it more drive when you need it. Some hills are just plain hard to get up though. Especially those red slippery ones around Gingers Creek lol.
Always look at the line you want to ride and not the line you don’t want to ride. That way the bike goes where you want it to. Simple tip, but it works.

in reply to: CRF 250 Check the valves and remove the head and piston #217388

I am sure with that cam tensioner that if you push it in and twist it it will stay released (the 450 one was like that). They are a good engine to work on I reckon.
