you might want to replace the metal material in the air box with a fine stainless steel mess which will allow it to breath but also keep the mess out of the airbox. you might also want to use maxima air filter oil.

HRC give a size for the side cover cutout, so no doubt they played with sizes to get whaat they thought was the right size.
Xr’s only sell a kit for the side cover that will go over the top of the holes i made in mine.
This kit does come with alloy plates and finer mesh.
As you have said a finer mesh is the go, i believe so too.

I use Motul filter oil, petrolium based oils are better than the no toil type filter oil,
What is the advantage of Maxima air filter oil ?

Thanks Kasuyaho. I’m 6,1 as well so thats interesting what you say about lift and seperate in the cockpit. Ballards have a pretty good riser kit that allows back and forth from memory. Damper is out of my $$ atm.

I’ve e-mailed Betta re stator upgrades so waiting to hear from them as well. My local bike sparky (also a bike nut, finke etc)is yet to be fully convinced about running GPS’s through CDI bikes. Says the power is too “dirty’ for finer electronics and needs some work to make it “clean”. I’m patient.

Good point you made about the Rallye bikes. I want reliability, power and durability and a bit of speed thrown in as well. I’ve still got a fare few k’s to do before I get some more rubber but I’ll keep the 908’s in mind.

    NFHU

And Mick, you’ll be first to know if I have a weak moment and decide to sell it.

    Newwiring_big.jpg

This is what you get from Betta bikes,
new head light, 100 watt QH lamp, upgraded stator, that puts out 200 watt,
bigger regulator which is that silver square thing,
and a capacitor that is the blue thing, that cleans the dirty up.
Capacitors absorb the spikes in the power, also the gps has a battery that does the same thing.

    Thanks Fellas,

Nickj, I wanted two bikes to cover all my current bases. WR for the dirt and playing around my property and the XR for the road/ADV type riding. I don’t need a road bike as it wouldn’t go where it needs too B) . Besides I have NEVER ridden a road bike.

Country looks good because of all the rain (rain, rain go away….) Getting in the way of harvest. Lucky I don’t farm any more. All my neighbours have been pretty ill affected by it :( :( If you have a keen eye, in the photo of the 3 Yamahas you can see two Canola paddocks in the background. These are now rotting on the ground.

Kasuyaho, I have been following yours posts on ADV with interest. And your duals ;)
As for future mods I’m not sure. For my needs it has plenty of get up and go so the standard pipe I’m happy with. Jetting may be next. Problem is I live at 400m but do alot of riding around here and up around Orange which is 8-900m so getting a jet combo to fit this may be tricky.

Probably change the rear tyre to a 606 or try a Mefo. Get some 20-25mm bar risers (any suggestions?) Add some better lighting and a 12V outlet. Matbe some type of screen too.

To be honest I have been looking at getting rid of it and getting an ADV style twin eg Transalp or Veestrom, but I can’t see that happening for a while.

For me no other bike brings a smile to my face like the BRP and i know as soon as I get rid of it I’ll regret it. If only it had a button (yes, I know I’m soft!)

I tried the bar raisers awhile ago and it was an improvement,
but being 6ft 1in tall it still did not feel right to me.

It felt when i was standing when i got on the brakes i felt like i was going over the bars.
Sitting it was like there was no room.

Moving the bars up and forward is the best way to go, and adding a steering damper is even more of a gain.

Talking to the yanks who raced Baja for many years the first things they did to this bike was change out the top clamp with a new one that moved the bars up and forward.

I run the MSC Rallye Clamp with under bar steering damper.
There a bit expensive but i liked it.
Have a look at Al Bakers XR’s only, they sell a top clamp as well as many other companies.

Eric’s site is a good one for jetting.

    http://www.xr650r.us/

Gary did the jetting guide and is an old Baja racer for many years.
He knows his stuff. QUADSAN was his nick on TT, do a search and read what he says.
You would use a 68S pilot jet with a 170 main jet, with standard pipe and no sidecover mod.
Put a HRC tip in the pipe and do the side cover mod, then go too a 172 main jet.
    Float height at 18mm.
The trick to getting the carby right is keep turning out the mixture screw till the flat spot almost dissapears.

D606 i tried one time out west, not a bad tire, alot of guys use it in Baja.
My prefference is D908 rear for long rides and wanting to go a little faster Michelin desert rear.
I used to use the Michelin Baja front but it is no longer being made, so i am trying a D907F front at the moment, heavy side walls i like which it has.
    I like it so far.

Betta bikes will do a stator upgrade and 100 watt head light kit and GPS/ grip heater output.
    Basically a Rallye kit.

This bike set up the right way with suspension done and a few others things is way better than a Transalp or VStrom.
If you want to get some where quick you can do it on the 650R.

There is alot of BS out there on the internet.
I based my bike off Rallye bikes,
Rallye bikes are built and setup to do everything.

Nice assortment of bikes there mate.

Have you got any plans to do a few more things to the BRP?

Apparently there are some 07 650R’s still in the USA brand new,
that can be picked up for a song.

The problem is the bike doesn’t wear fast enough to have to go buy another one.

mmm not to sure about using outboard oil on a regular basis in the dirt bike  only because an outboard has a constant flow of cooling water(sea, river lake ect)and will run at a cooler temp. I actually rang up the tech advise hotline (castrol from memory and he didnt think it would be a good idea) which is a bummer because I can get 2 stroke outboard at a really good price ;)

your other points are spot on tho ;)

    Ollie

Not trying to tell you what to do Ollie.

Outboards do have a thermostat so the water flow is regulated due to it’s temperature,
so the engine stays at running temperature even if it sucking in fresh cool water.

I am not sure 100% but i think in outboards the water first flows near the exhaust and is heated that way them it flows through the engine.

All outboard oil is, is a good quality 2 stroke oil.
I ran it in my air cooled bikes for years,
pulled the engine apartto freshen them up,
no carbon deposits in the combustion chamber at all.

Alot of those brand named oils are made by bigger companies like Mobil and Shell.

Having a talk to my uncle (who is now rertired but was the CEO of Mobil Oil asia pacific reogion)
about 2 stroke oils and what to run in my bike.
It becomes clear there is a balance between economics and quality.

Were not going to put good expensive oil in our lawn mower so mower oil is cheaply made so cheap to buy.
Outboard oil which is the best quality oil and a bit expensive,
why is this is because if your outboard fouls a plug you can die, if your mower fouls a plug the mower stops and no big deal really.

Alot of 2 stroke oils have additives,
additive to make smoke so the owner can see the smoke and know the engine is getting oil.
Additive to make it smell nice too and so on.

Companies like Motul, Motrex and smaller companies than the likes of Mobil and Shell,
these smaller companies approuch the larger companies to make there oil blends for them.

Back in the day when i was talking to my uncle Mobil made oil blends for,
Kenndell, Castrol to name a couple.

If it was me and i was using a 2 stroke i would go to a Mobil distributor and buy my oils from there,
i do that with my 4 stroke.
It is half the cost than buying through a shop and it is better oils than the Motul oils.
If i were using a 2 stroke i would just use outboard oils, 50:1 a water cooled outboard ratio is.

    IMHO

Glenn (mr Kasuyaho) is the only bloke I know who is as fanatical about his XR650 as you TB.

He tried talking me into one 3 years ago, thn 2 years ago you tried the same, must be something in them eh?

    Bruce,
I could talk for hours to try and convince you into buying one of these BRP’s.
And you would never understand me until you got one yourself.

So i will say it is the grin factor is why i like this bike so much :)

Nope really after the Staintune pipe,
    wanted to sizes thats all.
Staintune have the specs for it,
i’ll grab them off them later.

The T4 reverse cone deal, there was the one that was run on the X1 Baja bike
came up for sale on the Yahoo 650R site a few months back.
He was asking 500 bucks for it, no takers so he put it on e-bay.
I was wondering if that was the same pipe thats all.

I’ll probably build a pipe later on :)

    :)
