Jeepers! What a ride. It’s without a doubt the best ride I have ever done. Throughout the trip I went through the highest of highs riding some of the best trails I have ever seen and the lowest of lows as my 22 year old NX 650 gave me grief. But what will stay with me forever is the memory of the help, encouragement, friendship and camaraderie that I experienced on this ride.
Never having done a ride like this before I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. At times we travelled country lanes where you could relax and take in the beautiful country side and then others moments we were climbing gnarly loose rocky hills that went on forever. We crossed innocent causeways that did nothing but wash the dust from our bike and countless riverbeds with deep water and hidden soccer ball size rocks just waiting to sink man and machine. The variety of the terrain was an absolute highlight and blew me away. I’m still amazed where we actually were able to take our bikes.
Despite having a few mechanical issues I did do a lot of preparation for this ride:
New clutch cable.
New throttle cable.
New cam chain
Valves services and adjusted.
New air and oil filters (bought the wrong air filter)
Removed carby and had if professionally serviced and diaphragm fitted.
Removed, cleaned and serviced Fuel tank, fuel stopcock and fuel line.
Changed front brake calliper, master cylinder and brake line.
Made and fitted bag racks.
New sparkplug.
New tyres and heavy duty tubes.
Fitted new (smaller) rear indicators
New indicator (blinker) unit.
Spares included:
front brake and clutch levers
two tubes
spark plug
chain link
toolsI did try and give the old girl a good going over but I did completely overlook wheel bearing and Cush rubbers. Both of which were worn and should have been replaced before starting the ride. If I have learned one thing from this ride it would be to check all those small parts that need replacing from time to time. If they aren’t new and could cause trouble, replace them or take a new replacement part with you. I was very lucky to get replacement parts on this ride. Next time I won’t be so lucky. You can’t over prepare.
I’d like to thank everyone for their patience when I did have mechanical issues. And the willingness of the group to change the route just to accommodate me. If you let me come again I promise I’ll try my best not to let the group down.
I’d like to say a huge thanks to TB and Nick. The work they put into this ride was amazing. Even when the rest of us were necking beers and playing pool, TB had his head in a map plotting tracks to make the next day the best it could be. You blokes are tops and it was a pleasure to make this journey with you.
I’d also like to thank Mickp. It was obvious he has a lot of experience in this style of riding and did a fantastic job leading the group when needed. I’d go on a ride with the three amigos in a heartbeat.
Riding with the Boulder brothers was another highlight for me. The laughter, banter, help, and encouragement you blokes bring to a ride awesome. Boulder is always the first bloke to muck in when something needs to be done followed closely by his wingman and Bro Fish. I learnt a lot on this ride from you blokes.
Finally I like to thank my wingman Moose. Solid as a rock. He never crashed. He takes each obstacle in his stride. He’s quick with a joke. Always wears a smile and never seems to get flustered. Thanks for putting up with my snoring.
As good as the riding was and it was very good it was the people on this trip that made it so special for me.
The Mighty Quinn is now prepped and ready for the next ride.
When can we go?????????
I can’t wait

Well the NX is locked and loaded and I’ve got about an hour before heading off to meet Moose and Nick.
I’m starting wonder what I’ve forgotten and what I haven’t done to the bike. I hope the Old Girl makes it OK.
Let the adventure begin :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
Catch you ladies and gentlemen in about 8 days

I actually loved that ride, it was different and far from anything easy, every rider should tackle stuff like that every now and then, it makes for a better rider I think.
Bring kram castle next time and spend the whole weekend, the ring of knowledge was hillarious on both nights.
i will finish the ride report tonight.Boony
Next time Kram’s Kastle will be locked and loaded
Can’t wait to explore more of this area it was awsome.
I need to learn how to load photos onto the site. Snowy’s Right Turn of Torture deserved more documentation.

You must be suffering long term memory loss from the crash mate. You were leading me until your bike cartwhelled across the front of me. :pinch:

What a day
Thanks Boony, Snowy and Tarzan for an epic day.
The 2 klm detour we took was probably the hardest 2 klm I’ve ever ridden. At one stage I thought we might have to have a sleepover on the forest floor. Traction was zero, bikes were boiling, there was almost impassable obstacles every 100 metres or so and fatigue was really starting to kick in.
I wish we had some more photos of this trail.
The rest of the riding was awsome as well. Next time I’m camping
Stex had to make it home in time to go out for dinner.
He didn’t make it :woohoo: :woohoo:
Thanks again for an epic day. It’s certainly going to remain in my memory for a long time.

I’ve got the MT21’s on my 690. The rear I put on for the Corner ride and took it off after the Nabiac ride with just over 4000km on it running at 20-22psi with about 50% tar. The front I put on before the corner ride, about 1000k so all up now about 5000km. I reversed it after the nabiac ride as it was getting a bit stepped (and noisy) but still plenty of tread. I’ll fit a new front with a bit more knobs before leaving for the 3 state ride, just to try something different.
As TB said keep the pressures up for the run down the tar and they will be fine.Mick
Cheers Mickp
