yes the 30 kicks was the total stops and starts to take in the scenery or watch riders tackle obstacles or a view of the map etc.. so a lot of start and stop and the ole girl never requires more than 1 or 2 kicks to get her going even cold.. I have been told that I need the valve seals done as it is burning about 150 to 200 ml of oil every 500 k’s or so..
Mine as well check the piston and re-ring it too TB
Feisty fellows aren’t ya’ll… Its amazing to see how much passion each one has about the sport and weapon/tool one chooses to enjoy the sport..
I posed the question really for only one reason.. When I woke up Monday morning the only thing on my body that hurt was my right leg :woohoo: I think I kicked the old girl 30+ times in the 8-10 hours of riding this weekend.. So I thought well maybe I should consider something with a button.. I know lets go ask the boys at OBT!! :woohoo:
Never meant for ya’ll to shit fight..
When the time comes which unfortunately wont be in the immediate future the advice provided will sink in I’m sure.. If those willing to let me have a go of the various options come to be.. I think that advice to try a few on the tracks first is good advice..
Before I can do anything I need to sort a dilemma I found while cleaning the old girl up Monday.. It seems I have a 5c to 10c size rust hole in the bottom of my frame which jumped out at me when I removed my bash plate to change the oil.. I’ve been communicating with someone to obtain another frame so in the short term I need to find out what hassle the RTA is going to put me through to change the VIN and TB has offered to help me swap everything over if and when I get the other frame.. I figure if I have her all apart I mine as well take the opportunity to fix up any other things that may show up..
Thanks everyone for your input.. While it may seem to have not come through.. It has!!

At this point my mind is mush :silly:
It appears to match what I have with a button the DRZ seems to be the go, but if I want to have something that I will enjoy more once I build the skills and confidence I probably want one these 450’s..
Austblue – Greg only knows what I have told him..
I suppose I have been misinformed on the schedule of the newer bikes.. I must admit I have been hanging around XR bigots for about 3 or so years now.. In the end I just want to have fun and not interested in being a pro.. I appreciate your passion and experience I need more of it.. experience that is..
Didn’t realize I was going to get such thorough and passionate responses..
Not sure if it is style or ability.. I loved this weekends ride it was exactly what I have been looking for.. I did the B-Route and those routes at this point and time were within my ability and confidence.. Sunday was much better than Saturdays routes I thought.. A bit more challenging I thought as well as more fun.. Could I have done the A-route? After looking at some of the pictures and seeing all the guys on the ground I think I would have done just fine..
Maybe this is an amateur/weekend warrior comment but my XR400 performs way better than my WR250F did in my opinion..
This place rocks!! :woohoo: thanks everyone.. keep it coming…
Austblue – I owned a 2004 WR250F with an Athena 290 kit in it… It bucked like a bronco probably for more than one reason but I always thought it was due to its power to weight ratio and the suspension probably could have been tuned better I’m sure… I took that bike into Yamaha to have the valves checked.. They shimmed one and with new tires it cost me $1000.. Very large cucumber up the back side..
I constantly hear on other forums about the nightmarish maintenance schedules the new bikes require.. I’m also not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to doing valves and the like.. I would be grateful for someone to teach and guide me so I can do these sort of things myself.. But right now I’m dependent on someone else doing the work so I must pay for it..
I have no interest in the typical XR arguments… I love my XR and if it had a button I wouldn’t get rid of it as it fulfills my needs.. I want to get to the riding skill of thrashing down the single tracks the way the more experienced riders do within this group.. Can I do it now? Sure can but at a much slower pace.. Can I do it fast with my XR probably not but I bet one of the experienced riders can..
A lighter bike would be a bonus.. I probably don’t necessarily need more power..
Thanks to everyone lending and opinion…
Cheers…
Chris………..Hmm.. A couple of things…..
TB – Yes please find out if chops bike is for sale and let me know how much….
Mickmeld – That $9200 price is that $500 cash back after the $9200? Or do I have to provide $9700 and claim the $500… I have a mate who will most likely jump on this…. I will most likely by something used and bring it up to spec…
Austblue – Low maintenance.. change the oil, oil filter and air filter.. The new bikes from what I have heard need the valves done after a few rides.. I have heard the WR450’s are either full on or off nothing in between.. I’m an average rider hoping to become above average… I owned a WR250 that was all speced up for racing but it was like riding a bucking bronco.. I don’t want a 250..
After reading that chopper thread the mind is now racing…. I loved the sticker kit.. Is chopper still riding it? I noticed he hasn’t visited since November last year….
TB you up for another OBT Project bike
Thanks fellas..
I thought that was the case but looking at some photos of them they look to have the modern looking engines that want the high valve maintenance..
Any feedback from current or past owners.. What are the typical mods and addon’s one would want to do..
Hey bubba.. Thanks for the support this weekend..
doubled up..
Wow what a weekend.. My first ever big ride and what a hoot it was.. I rode the B-Route and had the best time riding in the 3 years or so I been back on 2 wheels..
I would like to thank TB, OBT, the sponsors and any other individual who made the weekend happen.. You got a hint at what went into organizing the weekend at the start but it all became clear when we got to the camp site, setup and they ran the awards portion.. A special thanks to the support crew.. All were top blokes and very accommodating for all the needs of the groups..
How about that special lady who gave up her weekend to help get the injured to the hospital, top honors.. TB laid out a box for collection at the camp site I hope there was enough for her and her man to have a night out..
The first half of each day was the best for me.. It was a great pace, not to easy but yet not too hard.. You blokes with those super bikes just amazed me all weekend.. I can’t imagine dealing with the weight through all that.. A thanks to llewdaert, Mick and Jeffro for doing all the lead and sweep duties.. The stand out in our group I think was Kat.. A lovely lady and boy she can ride.. I have a few mates she would put to shame..
I didn’t quite agree with the choice to give up and not finish the last half of the B-Route on Day 2 but I’m very grateful for the riding I did get to participate in.. I had a great lunch with Boulder, Kat and Strucky at a pub in Lithgow followed by some great conversation waiting back at the cars for the support group to return..
It was an honor to be allowed to join this group and ride.. I met lots of like minded people and remembering all their names will be a challenge.. I hope I can join another ride in the very near future..
:woohoo: OBT Rocks!!!! :woohoo:
I reckon it is about the money. The last time they raised the tax I’m sure you had a lot of people quit bringing the overall tax revenue down so now to get it back to where it was they increase it again. I believe it is just about keeping the same steady tax revenue. If they really believed it was as dangerous as they claim they would outlaw it all together but they will never outlaw it because the tax revenue is too much.
Cheers…
Chris………..Piece of piss…. If your willing to fork out $5 you can get around anything and everything even the soon to be communistic filter the commies in power in this country want to implement.. Monkeys in charge have no clue!!
