See my Avatar Champ ;) I’ve done more km’s on a CRF recently than most so I have a fair idea of whats needed & whats not.

As I have already said Champ! I will leave it up to the EXPERTS eh! ;)

Champ is not a word I’d normally use, however since it was in reply to someone that favours the word I threw it in

Seems when I choose to share my hard earned knowledge someone clutching at straws knows better. :(

It,s all good mate. As TB has previously stated there are many opinions out there and it all comes down to peoples individual preferences. No one is right or wrong, and my opinion comes from many hours and kms of Adventure riding on a 2008 model KTM450exc converted to do some Adventure riding where the bike is designed for something completely different. I don’t have the coin to buy two bikes so I use the one that I have. So the things that I have suggested are from experience and not clutching at straws. Your opinion is different and I respect that.
Anyway we are way off topic and I was just giving Bols some ideas as to how to best spend his hard earned from MY experience.
Maybe we should catch up for a beer sometime and swap notes. ;)

    Cheers,
    Lefty

    Hey there Bols!

A soft/comfortable seat is a must. Reduce the vibrations through the handle bars, rubber mount, maybe some weight in the bar ends would help to reduce the vibes. I still need to try this. (TB suggestion) Or better still a set of flex bars. Soft Rallye Grips. Screen for wind buffet, good head light in case you get stuck and require to do some night riding, not ideal but better than a std candle. Pivot pegs are a comfort thing.

    More Later,

    Cheers Lefty

CRF’s have rubber mount bars standard, they twist at the the smallest hit

Screens are not needed, I even ride a naked sport bike, Screens are for softies & over rated IMHO

A set of Rallye foam grips maybe, although a few people think Renthal Dual Compound Kevlar grips are better, especially if you don’t like bulky grips.

A Set of Fastway F3 pegs are the go, can be run at standard height or 10mm lower. Much better than the mini bike pegs that come on the CRF.

It seems as though I am way off the mark   I will leave it to the experts! ;)

    Hey there Bols!
A cush drive is a great idea for sure, although I haven’t purchased one yet for the Kato 450 and have had no problems at all with the gearbox in it, however I will in future.
From my experience with a dual purpose enduro/adv bike would be a soft/comfortable seat is a must. Obviously adv gearing is a must to reduce engine speed and get better fuel economy.

It was a cracker of a weekend :woohoo: A very special thanks to Mick and Melissa for their hospitality at Chateau Wauchope, it was awesome! Another special thanks to Moose for being the leader as the trails were awesome and challenging in places with the odd swim thrown in!! :pinch: And that grass track was so much fun, thanks Moose. Thanks to TB for organising the weekend, Spud and Dejay for their sweeping efforts and to Crash for giving me a hand up over that tree root on the last single.
The grass track that Moose cut in was awesome and we had some great dices on Saturday afternoon. :woohoo: Not that anyone was racing eh!

    Thanks again everyone!

I went down and signed up my young bloke, Riley last weekend at Penrith PCYC Minibike Club and today was the 1st outing. It was only a grading day but the organisers and competitors were all really friendly and great to be a part of. I volunteered to be a marshall and it was great to help out with the kids and be part of the action. The activites that they get the kids to do are very good for there skills and I am sure they all improve with practice.
Riley has never raced before and he was looking forward to the Motocross section as were all the kids. The way it works is there is a maximum of 4 starters per race and they have 3 heats each. Points are awarded to each competitor depending on their position. After the heats are run and if the points are equal there is a sudden death run off for 1st and 2nd over 2laps followed by another run-off for 3rd and 4th.
I was pretty chuffed when Riley won the 1st heat, especially when he stalled it off the line and was last into the 1st corner  I think he was a little angry because he was in the lead half way through the 1st lap.
To cut a long story short 3 heats, 3 wins then followed by a final run-off 4 starts, 4 wins :woohoo: you could say that I was one proud dad!! We had better stop now and not ruin the perfect record   there is only one place to go from here. :silly:
Well we had a great day and here are some pics

Yes I would mhave to agree with TB. Although there is another good reason to run an exhaust bung, especially if you have say 3 bikes on one trailer and one is put on backwards so bars don’t clash etc. All the air, water dust etc when travelling will enter your pipe (on the one facing backwards) and if you exh valves are open this crap has the potential to enter your engine, with the possibility of causing damage.

    Cheers,
    Lefty

Maybe if your inlet valves were open and the air filter out and cover off

better off making sure the bike is in neutral on the trailer so you dont get the ring bore damage from the bike rocking on long trips

“Maybe” but I would prefer to air on the side of caution instead of being pissed off! But you seem to have all bases covered eh!

i’ve got a 13 so its going on

see what happens as to wether it stays on or not

No worries Bob sounds good! The only thing that i would suggest is to keep an eye on your chain guide/runner that protects your swingarm next to the counter sprocket. As the smaller the gear the more the guide wears. Just a tip. ;) You don’t want any swing arm damage eh.

Final drive gearing is a bit of personal preference there is no hard and fast rule, it also depends on engine size, torque, weight, primary drive ratio, gear ratio’s and tyre size. However if you are doing alot of single track you would usually gear your bike lower as speeds are reduced and there is less load on clutches, engines etc. Where as if you are doing more open trails and say some ADV riding thrown in and you need some fuel economy you would use higher gearing to keep engine RPM lower and speed higher.
For example on my KTM450 when I use it for single track work my gearing is 14/52 which equates to 3.71 to 1. This means that the counter shaft sprocket turns 3.71 times to the rear wheel turning once.
When I do an Adv ride I use 14/45 which equates to 3.21 to 1. It doesn’t sound like much but it does make a huge difference.

    Hope this Helps,
