Hey Jimmy, the biggest killer of CRF, WRF, YZF valves etc and most other manufactuers with titamium valves is not the air filtration, because if it was the bore and rings would be rooted and the piston skirt would probably be scuffed. And in most instances bore, piston, rings etc are ok. After many hours of engine building, then disassembly and inspection and after consultation with many other people experienced in the field both here and overseas.
The main reason is that the valves in these bikes are manufactured from a compressed titanium powder not a billet. (Cheap to manufacture) They have a hardened external surface which after time the valve seat actually work hardens and becomes far harder than the valve; which in turn breaks through the surface hardening of the valve. Then the valve seating surface pounds away at the seat and starts to take the same shape as the seat. Then slowly loosing valve clearance till there is none and the bike won’t start as it has no compression. It is called Valve Recession.
This is also a common problem with the Toyota BEAMS 3SGE engines that I build for rallying. (The cylinder Heads are manufactured by Yamaha and they have the same valves). Another reason for this is cam profile, but this is a story for another day.
The fix for this is alternative valve seat/valve combination, and I don’t mind saying this as the best people to sort this out is RAMS Head Service in Windsor.

Hope this helps a little to understand this “Valve Recession” issue. ;)

    Cheers,
    Lefty

    Hey Mick,
Looks great mate. Wish i could be there. :( Great Job you and Connor and to Adam and Sam for lending a hand, also to Protty for getting another headache and running another event up there. I am sure that it will be just as awesome as the last one and it is great to see for our sport. ;). Well done Protty!

    Great job keep it up.

    Cheers,

I think it may be time to convert the old girl to carry some adventure gear and go for a blast with you guys! :woohoo:

   What an adventure boys!!! Hey DJ it was a bit slack that TB didn’t let you in his tent. i’m sure that if you left 2 bob on his pillow all would be fine!

It sounds like one of those fun spare of the moment rides, which are usually the best. I went out on a ride by myself with some tools to try to get the old girl to handle. I think I crashed about 6 times and was not so successful so i think i might give Evil Rudy a call tomorrow and ask him to sort it out.

do you have bar raisers (i dout it )or an under bar steering damper(take them of) too high a bars seem to stuff up turn in i took the rasers of my 08 530 and lent the bars back a bit and this helped a fair bit(not as cumfy standing but) .i did not believe this untill i tryed it.reckon the correct spring would help two have a look on tecknics web sight it has spring rates and rider weights on it.if the backs that far out the front springs prably needs changing to $$$ i got some in the shed

    Hey Rocket,
No i don’t have bar risers (vertically challenged mate) ;) And my steering damper is an over bar type. I will have a chat to tekniks and see what they think; but I am sure it can be better. At the birthday ride it was awesome at Sunny Corner but i had new tyres and there was good grip. As soon as it gets a bit loose that is when it is a pain in the arse. I will keep trying. thaks for your input.

As I say Every Day is a School Day!

    Hey Lefty

You mention lowering crown height and jacking up the rear end a little which should help but you could also try an offset bar mount. You are not a heavy guy so centering your mass a little further forward may help keep the front wheel more planted.

    STM

    Yeah thanks STM, ;)

On the std triple clamps I have 4 bar positions. Mine was at position 2 I will now try Position 3 which is futher forward of the pivot point. So this in theory shuld bring my eight a little further forward.

Do you want the double or single room? Tell her there’s a near new bathroom for you to use here too.

There would be nearly no weight on the rear spring by now. Maybe try splitting the diiference between static and rider sag. Doesn’t sound like you’ll make it any worse.

What offset are the Berg triple clamps. Maybe a set of them might be cheaper than the aftermarket ones.

Until Rudy chimes in I’ll keep thinking of ideas. :)

Oh and the shed has a bed and bathroom too if your not comfortable staying in the house with us… ;)

  The shed will be fine!

I am about 75kg with all my gear on and ready to ride. Which should be fine with the std spring. The only thig is that the berg triple clamps are 22mm which gives less trail. I have been reading KTM Talk and the majority of guys reckon go to 18mm offset to increase trail; this gives a more planted feel through singles etc; however this will give less stability at higher speed but this is over come by more steering dampening at speed as well as moving the rear wheel as far back as possible….

    I will keep experimenting. ;)

    Thanks for your help.

   Mal, you are a funny man! Mate I would love to update, but the minister for war and finance needs a new bathroom and if I did update I think i would need to move in to your place.
I was told to lower the rear more today and cut the rear subframe. It would end up an f*#%n chopper then and never turn.

    Hey Murph,

Great ride report. I would love to have a crack at one of your rides one day. Maybe when i grow up a little. Looks as though I may need to touch the ground at some point. :silly:
