“if you ask me the best in the last decade was the 07 model before they went to fuel injection”
0h good call!
mine is a ’07 TE450.
trying out new pirelli tyres tomorrow on it
you would probably know better than me, you own one, but the dealer had a ktm mx bike out front, linkage but no idea of the year, and it looked different where the subframe bolts on, the rest could look similar on anything i suppose but the plastics do hide a lot.
i’m of the impression they were real huskys until the bmw takeover, from there they got a bit weird for my liking, i definitely prefer my heavy old TE450 to the xlite series even though i wanted a 310 but was scared off by reliability issues.
still, some say it’s only a real husky if it’s blue/yellow, depends on how nostalgic you want to get…TrailBoss wrote:KarmaG8 wrote:Trailboss wrote:It’s the american KTM motorcross frame (read linkage)No. It’s not. The KTM MX frame can’t accomodate the plastic rear clip or the negative bonding strap…It’s an all new frame.
 ?? Can you explain more regarding the plastic rear clip and the negative bonding strap
TB
plastic rear clip is the ABS plastic sub frame, sounds cheap and nasty but it’s well thought out and doesn’t look it.
the negative bonding strap would be a point on the frame for a negative lead from the battery to improve the electrical circuit of the system i’m guessing.doesn’t look anything like the KTM MX frame by the way.
I’ve always loved the bullet proof nature of my TE450, the easy valve clearance check/adjust, and the tractor like grunt have made it very hard to consider an upgrade to a newer one.
Fact is though, it’s tall for me and the weight makes it tiring late in the day, saw the new TE300 at dealer yesterday and i’m seriously thinking about a stroker again, the new model is seriously trick and while i’m no fan of KTM, pds is useless for short riders! and their 4 stroke i’m no fan of, but i do love the new husky range all round, they ooze quality and thoughtful set up, the WP suspension is impressive, the price is not. but we can’t have everything…..
hmmm, decisions decisions

CHEERS
for good chainsaws and cutting chains, go for a husqvarna! i hear they make pretty good bikes too…..
tee hee!!!as for the bike chain, i use chain wax on my road bikes religously, but on my TE i use crc 5.56. it gets sprayed almost everywhere after being washed and the chain cops it as well. so far it seems to be working well, and with putting it on after washing, it has time to dry and the excess drips off long before it gets in the dirt.
i used the duckhams oil on the stove when i was a kid and my mother tore strips off me, told me to use the bbq, then dad tore strips off me! duckhams is marketed in australia by bp i think and it’s still available apparently. only for non o ring chains though, and i think i may go for a non o ring chain and see how it goes, if it’s strong enough for the 450.paul.
congratulations on your purchase mate. i’m more hopeless on a smoker than on a 4 stroke so i have no idea how they are. still, they _are_ a husky!!!
paul.
it’s been a month since the last post so i’m not sure if a 510 is in the garage or still a plan, but i’d like to add that i have a 07 TE450 that has been pretty good. the 50mm forks are the only real weakness, because of the diameter there’s not enough seal tension to keep muck out, mine needed new seals and chrome! not impressed!!! i’ve been using seal savers since with no worries at all. no vibe problems with mine, it’s a carb model if that matters but it’s awesome to ride, plenty fast and it has a lot more turn than a mates ktm, that seems to understeer everywhere in comparison. really easy to maintain, and yes, it’s a competition bike so it needs more love than say a DRZ but it’s a pleasure it’s so easy. don’t know if seat height is an issue, i’m 5’3″ and had mine lowered 40mm and it’s still tall, but i don’t ride other bikes often for comparison, except said ktm and a KX250 that is just stupid.

SOLD.
good to see you got it all sorted, as far as brake fluid goes, there’s only two manufacturers of glycol fluid in oz, BP and caltex i think, and a general rule of thumb is the higher the dot rating the higher the boiling point. with the trade off being the higher the hygroscopic effect as well. that is to say, the higher the dot rating the quicker it absorbs moisture. dot4 is an excellent fluid which is suitable for almost any road/trail application, serious competition may call for the higher 5.1 but if you use it, as has been said before flush it regularly, otherwise localised rust will set in in the system.
As for dot5 don’t be scared of it, just make sure it’s used in the right application with the correct changeover procedure (if applicable to your brakes). I have used the dow corning dot5 in my dukes for over 10 years with no problems because i educated myself on the do’s and don’ts beforehand. It doesn’t absorb moisture from the atmosphere but if moisture does get into the system it stays seperate from the fluid and will boil, turn to steam and cause a spongy lever. localised rust will also be a problem if the system isn’t flushed regularly for the same reasons as dot 5.1, it won’t mark paintwork though, and has a higher boiling point than dot 4.paul.

yep i’m up for a decent ride for sure! dunno about fraser, been there, and considering how crap i am in sand i’d have to leave the bike on the ute and drink turkey all weekend…….
i’ve “heard” there’s a great loop through the border ranges? dunno anything about it but i’m up for almost anything. i do like the idea of a fire trail loop up north around gayndah is it?paul.
no worries, thanks moto.
paul.my missus would nail my nuts to the floor if i did that!
quick question, my husky has the flame guard between the filter and the intake mouth, and it all fits together very snug, do i need to grease both sides of the flame guard? i’ve pulled and cleaned my filter a few times now and i haven’t bothered with the grease, just shell filter oil.
cheers,
paul.thanks for that.
paul.
that video is gold!
